Capítulo 68: Ch. 68: Grimmheim

That night as I curled up on my cot, I couldn't help remembering Kovin's words.

He was no different than how Rodair treats me . . . Does that mean Kovin is disillusioned in his fealty or was Baymun really somewhat of a decent person?

But how could he be - he destroyed my race! That demon led us to our destruction - because of him our race was doomed for extinction. A man like that couldn't be good, could he?

My troubled mind was causing me to shift back and forth on the cot which in turn caused my little companion to wake up. The whelp climbed up to my forehead making cute frustrated grunts.

"Sorry little one . . . I'm not a very comfortable pillow, am I?" I chuckled as the whelp circled, kneading her teeny claws in my soft skin. I could barely feel it, but for some reason it brought a strange comfort. The whelp leaned her head forward to touch mine and an overwhelming sense of calm came over me.

Puzzled, I asked, "Did you just calm me down?"

The whelp made a contented purr while curling and nuzzling down for another respite. My racing thoughts from earlier were all but gone as I drifted off to a soothing sleep, the whelp's constant purring granting me peace.

----

The next day had each of us on edge. We were to send our messenger Viktor to request an audience with the Grimmhiem leader, but unfortunately Viktor got ahold of some bad meat last night and was feeling the effects of food poisoning.

Wasn't that just a shame?

Since Viktor was out of commission, I sent Lendale our informant. He and Richie had gotten to be very good friends since they both gossiped non-stop. I didn't like having to send Lendale forward, but he was still very good with getting meetings set up.

Our army was at the top of a hill overlooking the Grimmheim valley below. At the front was Toval, Iren, Kovin, Rodair and myself. Obviously, Richie and Illana were back in the camp, even though Richie begged to come out today since (as he put it) 'there shouldn't be any fighting on the ridge, right?'

Below lay a huge section of grassy meadow encompassing the tall wooden gates surrounding the Grimmheim village where a large circular stone structure was placed directly in the center of their city. I could only guess that that's where they perform their sacrificial rituals.

We watched as Lendale rode his stead across the meadow to their gate, waving a white flag of peace. The gate opened and a large man stepped out to meet him about a third of the way. You could see the two talking, but obviously we couldn't hear them. I saw Lendale point back in my direction and turned around to give the man a smile. Without any warning, the burly man reached forward and yanked Lendale off the horse.

I froze in worry as I looked at the sight below. Within a matter of seconds, the burly man had turned Lendale to face us slicing his throat while a permanent look of horror fixed on Lendale's face as he sank to the ground.

Our army was silent and stunned when a loud ringing laugh echoed across the meadow.

"Champion! Come forth! Don't send unworthy little messengers to talk with me!!" The burly man belted more laughter as rage consumed my body.

I made a signal for the others to stay put, however Rodair's burly voice stopped me, "Lady Ezran, please allow Rodair to accompany -"

I cut him off without looking in his direction, "Stay here. That's an order," then I urged my horse forward.

Getting halfway to the man, I dropped from my steed and briskly walked the rest of the way. The whelp was hanging on to my hair, throwing hisses in the man's direction projecting the same rage I felt.

"This is the so-called Champion? A tiny woman? How dare the Bodach Empire send such pathetic lowlifes our way! You wish for a treaty? Hah! Your army is nothing but a joke! Why should we ally with you? Bodach is worthless!"

The man continued his insults as I strode forward, stepping over poor Lendale's body, not stopping until I stood directly in front of the man. The tall man obviously didn't see me as a threat so without a word of warning, I swiftly pulled out a dagger and stabbed him right in the manhood.

A piercing roar filled the air as the man doubled over on top of me, feebly trying to stab me with the blade he cut Lendale with. I grabbed his hand with my free one and, since he seemed too hurt and shocked to actually put any strength behind his attack, I swiftly bent it until it broke while simultaneously twisting my dagger, slicing off a good round portion of his manly bits. He dropped his blade, tears welling in his eyes as he fell to his knees.

I pulled the blade out as he was falling and placed it to his throat, "That man was nothing but an informant. He was unarmed . . . YOU are the pathetic lowlife!" I screamed at him as I sliced his throat the same way he killed Lendale.

Blood poured over me as all hell broke loose.

The Grimmheim soldiers saw their fallen leader and began pounding wardrums as our own warhorn blew through the valley. I heard the thunderous roar of pounding feet coming from my front as mixed noises of hooves and boots were coming from behind me. I was closer to the Grimmheim soldiers, however I knew that Kovin would make sure to have the ones riding horseback by my side quickly. It would take a good minute for the two armies to collide, so I quickly reached down and closed Lendale's fearful glazed eyes.

After a small moment of silence, I lifted my head and looked up at the incoming onslaught while whispering to my little friend, "Hold on tight - this is gonna be one rough ride."
