Capítulo 4: The goblin invasion part 1
The characteristic sound of the bell announcing the end of the school was heard. Glad to have left school, I chose the short way home to get there quickly and play the game with Ruby. But unfortunately, what I had been trying to avoid all day happened. I ran into Miko.
"Hey Shinji."
"No, stay away."
"Huh? Why do you say that?"
Because you have been watching me all day today. When I was outside, you were hiding in the bushes or behind the trees, and at school I could see you in every corner. I was starting to worry about my physical safety.
Although I was wary of her I didn't show it on my face.
"Oh, so you figured it out."
I guess I couldn't hide it from a girl in love.
"It was not that hard. You obviously did not put much effort into hiding."
"Humph." She pouted, cutely.
"Give me an honest answer and I will not report you," I said.
"Um, well I ..."
At that moment, Miko's hair fluttered in the air. Her purple hair fluttering in the air and her red eyes glowing in the darkness were strongly reminiscent of a scene from a romantic anime. She was clearly one of the top beauties in our school.
"I love you."
"HUH!? (Did I hear that right? She said that she loved me? There's no way something like that would happen to me. This is clearly a joke)."
"I-I s-said that I l-love you." She said as she lowered her face that was starting to turn rosy.
"No. No way. Hell no. I am leaving now."
Without waiting for her response, I turned around and paced my way back home.
"Wait!"
"Hey, why are you following me? Do not come here! Leave me alone!"
[After twenty minutes of running.]
"Oof s-s stop chasing me. I can not hold on anymore. I am going to faint."
"T-then s-stop running."
"No, no way. If you do not stop chasing me, I am going to keep running."
"O-ok, so I'll stop chasing you and you'll listen to me."
"And why would I do that?"
"Do you want to run away for the rest of your life?"
"... O-ok deal."
After we both stopped running, we went to find a bench to rest for a while. It took me some time to get my breathing back to normal. That's what I get for staying home all day and not moving.
Miko was in no better condition. Her whole face was red and she could not catch her breath.
After huffing and panting, we collected ourselves and faced each other.
"So, what do you want to tell me?"
"I... I said that I love you."
"Yes, I understood that."
"And why did you run away?"
Isn't that obvious?
"Because you ran toward me when I was leaving. I thought you wanted revenge because I rejected you."
"Huh? No, I just wanted to ask you why you rejected me. Is it because I am not beautiful enough? Or because I am not fit to be your girlfriend?"
She said as she heldthe helm of her skirt with eyes that were shining due to the moonlight that was shining in the tears that were forming in the corner of her eyes.
"Please tell me why you do not like me."
Damn, her tear-filled eyes were looking at me inside. I can not escape her gaze. What am I going to do now? I did not want to hurt her feelings.
"Stop crying. None of those reasons are why I rejected you."
"Then why did you do it?"
Eeh, now I have to come up with a reason to reassure her. I can not just tell her I am not interested. Or... can I? I'll definitely come up with a better explanation. What did I do to deserve all this?
"Um. Because you are the prettiest girl in our school, I thought you were making fun of me, so I choose to leave in order to not embarrass myself."
"But I really meant what I said. I love you."
"And you love me exactly?"
"Um... yes, I love you so much that lately I can not get you out of my mind. When I see you, my heart beats as fast as a train, it melts like an iceberg, it's like a burning match."
"I never thought in my life that a girl would ever say such sweet words to me, talk about development".
"Also...I really like your shyness, I like boys who are like that...there is so much more...um I can talk for an eternity."
"(Ok....relax buddy, she is very much in love with me, but what should I do?)"
"Have I convinced you?"
"Should I answer now?"
"Just answer yes or no. It's okay if you say no...we can stay friends... after all."
"I guess so..." I murtured in a voice that only I could hear.
"What did you say? I could not hear you."
"I said yes. You convinced me."
I do not know how that happened, but her whole face lit up with joy. Damn, it's too bright.
"Good, then I am going to go home now. My mom might worry because I have not come back yet."
"Okay. Take care of yourself."
"I finally got out of that awkward situation. I hope Ruby did not overhear our conversation."
But as usual, I am out of luck. I felt my phone vibrate as soon as I moved away from Miko. I already knew what was going to happen now. Hesitantly, I took my phone out of my pocket and looked at the screen. As expected. I saw Ruby looking at me with a murderous look.
"Shinji. Did I hear you right? You said you love her?"
"Um, well, see."
"Go on, go on."
"Um..."
"Come on, do not be afraid."
She coaxed me to tell her the reason with the prettiest smile she could muster, but she couldn't fool me.
"Well, you see, it's not that I really love her."
"Then what is it? Speak."
Thankfully, at that moment, a notification of a new event in the game came to my phone. At that point, I gave the game management a big thumbs up in my heart.
"Aaah, there's a new event. We should check it out."
"Where are you going? You did not answer my question."
"We have to go quickly. We do not know how long the event will last."
"You obviously want to duck an answer, don't you?"
She knows me pretty damn well, doesn't she?
"Huh?" What are you trying to say? Why would I want to evade your question?"
"Then answer it now."
"Ah, we do not have much time. I'll answer your question another time."
"Hmm, I will not forget."
"Yes, trust me. I will keep my promise. (I definitely will not answer the question)."
After this (dangerous for me) conversation, we arrived home. I ate quickly and went to my room.
"Okay, let us get started."
"What is this event about?"
"Oh yeah, I forgot to see that. It seems that soon there will be a goblin invasion in Falconia."
"Are not goblins the lowest monsters?"
"No, goblins are rank E. The lowest are the slime creatures, which are rank F."
"I see, I see."
"Okay, then let us go."
"Before we go, there's something I need to do."
"What is it?"
"Well, I have not played at all, so I have not moved up. And it's going to be hard to defeat these goblins with no skills."
"So you want to cheat before you play the game like a normal person?"
"Yeah, that's right."
"Eh, what can I say? Do whatever you want."
"Do not worry about that. I'll just take the powers I need to defeat the goblins. Nothing more."
"Why should not I believe you?"
"Because you do not trust me at all."
"Am I wrong about that?"
"No, but let us leave that for now. I am ready."
"Okay, then let us go."
After entering the game, we quickly found each other.
The event would start in 30 minutes, so we took a walk around the city.
It was really beautiful.
All these medieval houses, the flowers and nature mingling with the human structures, the people in every corner of the city, and the children running around and laughing. There were every kind of shops around the street, from food to cloths, from weapons to armors.
There were bards singing, hawkers hawking, children playing, and all kinds of lively stuff that was hard to come by in the modern society. Everything was so... alive.
Then the city bell rang. All the people who had been laughing and enjoying themselves before suddenly ran away and locked themselves in their houses.
It was the warning of the goblin invasion.
"Aah, I think it's time we went to the city gate." Although I wanted to enjoy the city more, I knew I'll have a lot time for that after the event.
"Looks like it."
Outside the city gate was a bunch of armed people. Twenty-seven, to be exact. All ready to fight.
"Is not that too many people for a simple goblin invasion?"
"Well, it's going to be a horde of goblins, so I assume they'll be careful. And they'll probably want to collect the loot and prizes at the end of the event."
"I understand." I replied as I nodded in understanding.
"The invasion itself is a level C event because of the number of goblins."
"Is not that very difficult for those who do not have enough skills and power yet?"
"I think so, but I am ready to face the goblins with my skills."
"You mean cheats."
"What difference does it make? I use the cheats with my abilities. So I can say that I will fight with my abilities." She said with voice filled with righteousness, catching me off gaurd.
"Uh, you got me there."
"And do not worry about the others. It's not like they'll die in real life if they die in the game. They just will not be able to log in for two days."
"Who says I am worried about them. I am just worried about them getting in my way."
"That's the right attitude. Well, we should be on our way then. I can see the goblins coming our way already."
It was not long before the horde arrived.
When the others saw the goblins, they pounced on them and began slaughtering them. Ruby and I stayed behind and watched them fight.
I must say that the graphics and physics of the game were excellent. The way the goblins' blood flew through the air after they were cut in half, how realistic their reactions were after they were stabbed. The developers included so many details that you could not tell the game from real life. Truly a work of art.
Even I was surprised by the fact that this much gore didn't affect me much. I guess deep down, I knew, I knew that all of this was a game.
"So Ruby, do you want to join them?"
"You can go. I'll stay behind and shoot the arrows from a distance."
"Will you be safe?"
"Yeah, go ahead."
"Okay. (Let us try out my new skills then)." I replied as I cracked my neck and fingers to get the feel.
And I jumped into the fight.
My movements were so smooth. It was as if I weightless. I must say that I had a lot of fun knocking down the goblins. But they were so weak that I could not use my skills at all. I could only kill them with my strength alone. (Yes, I also increased my spiritual power a little. And when I say a little, I mean that I reached the peak of A rank.)
But then I saw four of the other adventurers fly through the air and the rest of them run away from the battlefield.
"(Why are they running away?)"
I went in the direction they had fled. The good thing is that I found out why they ran away, the bad thing is that I was almost killed.
I saw two huge orcs coming towards me. I did not manage to stop in time and one of them swung his wooden club at me. But luckily I was able to dodge him in time. (Luckily I have a high speed).
After this near fatal experience, I ran back to Ruby to tell her what had happened.
"How does it look back here?"
"Boring, the goblins are too weak. Why did you run away?"
"Well, I saw orcs up ahead."
"Orcs? Was not that an invasion of goblins?"
"I do not know that either, but the rank of the invasion has risen to B."
"And why did you come here? Can not you handle them? Is not your deception enough?"
"No, I can handle them effortlessly. I just came here to warn you."
"Oh, how kind of you. Do you really think I can not handle them?
"Do you know what an orc is?"
"No, but if the goblins are so small, how big can an orc be?"
"Hehe, you'll soon see." I tried my best to suppress the laugh but a giggle soon escaped my mouth.
"Why are you laughing?"
"Look ahead."
"What's that? How are we going to fight those things!?"
"Are you scared?"
"Cut the bullshit and tell me how we are going to kill it."
"I'll take care of it. Do not worry about it."
"Alone?"
"Yea."
"How many abilities have you unlocked?"
"You'll see." I said with a smile.
"Well then, let the battle begin."
