Capítulo 16: Chapter 16: The Shadow of Betrayal

The sounds of battle faded as Luis regrouped with his allies, adrenaline still coursing through his veins. The alley behind him echoed with the tension of the confrontation, and he could still see Ren's panicked expression lingering in his mind. "We need to get back to the temple!" he shouted, urgency lacing his voice. "Diodora's men won't stop until they find us!"

Kuroka nodded, her eyes scanning the surroundings. "What about Ren? He could still be in danger."

"He made his choice," Luis replied grimly, though doubt gnawed at him. The young exorcist had shown signs of fear and hesitation—was there still hope for him? "We have to focus on getting everyone back safely first."

As they navigated the winding streets, Luis felt the weight of responsibility pressing down on him. He had put the entire group at risk by exposing the possibility of a traitor. Now, with the attack from Diodora's men fresh in their minds, the atmosphere was thick with uncertainty.

Upon returning to the temple, they were met with hushed whispers and anxious faces. Luis called for an assembly in the main hall, his heart pounding as he faced his comrades. "Listen up! We were ambushed. Diodora's men are onto us, and I suspect our traitor is still out there, possibly working with them."

"Do you think it was Ren?" Suzaku asked, her brow furrowed with concern.

"I don't know," Luis admitted, running a hand through his hair. "But we have to prepare for a possible attack. We need to strengthen our defenses and keep a closer eye on each other."

As discussions erupted among the group, Luis found himself drawn into a conversation with Haruto. "What if Ren isn't a traitor? What if he was just scared?"

Luis shook his head, feeling the burden of leadership weighing heavily on his shoulders. "Fear can make people do terrible things, Haruto. But we can't afford to be naive."

Later that night, while the temple fell into an uneasy slumber, Luis found himself alone in the training yard. The moon hung low, casting a pale light over the stone ground. He needed clarity, a moment to sort through the chaos of the day.

"Why did it have to come to this?" he muttered to himself, frustration boiling within him. Just then, he caught a glimpse of movement from the corner of his eye.

"Who's there?" he called out, instinctively reaching for his weapon.

A figure stepped into the moonlight, and Luis's heart raced as he recognized Ren. The young exorcist looked weary, shadows underlining his eyes.

"Luis, please, I need to talk to you!" Ren pleaded, desperation etched on his face.

"Why should I listen to you?" Luis shot back, his voice hard. "You ran from the fight, Ren. You put us all in danger."

"I know! I was scared! But I'm not the traitor!" Ren exclaimed, taking a step forward. "I can help you. I know things—things about Diodora's plans. If you let me explain, I can prove my loyalty."

Luis hesitated, his mind racing. Could he trust Ren after everything that had happened? The flicker of hope in Ren's eyes made him pause. Maybe there was still a chance to redeem himself.

"Fine. Speak," Luis said, lowering his weapon but keeping his guard up.

Ren took a deep breath, his voice steadying as he began. "I overheard some of Diodora's men talking when I was on my way back from the town. They're planning a large-scale attack on our temple within the next few days. They think they can catch us off guard while we're still reeling from the ambush."

Luis's heart raced at the news, but skepticism lingered. "Why would you even be in the vicinity of Diodora's men?"

"I was trying to gather information. I thought if I could prove my worth, you'd see I'm on your side. I never wanted to betray you!" Ren insisted, his voice rising in intensity.

Luis could see the sincerity in Ren's eyes, a flicker of desperation that reminded him of his own past struggles. But he also felt the weight of betrayal pressing on his heart. "If you want me to believe you, you have to come with us. We need to prepare for this attack."

"I will. I'll do whatever it takes," Ren replied, hope rekindled in his voice.

The next morning, Luis gathered the exorcists, preparing to discuss the new information Ren had provided. He could feel the uncertainty in the air as he introduced Ren to the group. "Everyone, I know there have been doubts about Ren's loyalty, but he has crucial information about Diodora's plans for an attack."

Murmurs rippled through the assembly, and Kuroka narrowed her eyes at Ren. "How do we know this isn't another trap?"

"We don't," Luis admitted, his voice steady. "But we can't ignore the possibility that this information is genuine. We have to prepare for the worst."

"What's the plan?" Haruto asked, leaning forward.

Luis took a deep breath, feeling the weight of his leadership pressing down on him. "We need to fortify the temple's defenses and set up watch points around the perimeter. We'll also need to divide into smaller teams for scouting and gathering information. Ren, you'll lead one of the scouting teams."

The tension in the room was palpable, but there was a flicker of hope, a chance for redemption.

As they began to prepare, Luis felt a shift in the atmosphere. They were no longer just a group of exorcists; they were a united front against a common enemy. The bond they shared was stronger than any betrayal.

As the day wore on, Luis and his allies worked tirelessly, reinforcing their defenses and setting traps around the temple. The hours passed quickly, the air thick with determination. Ren moved among the groups, doing his part to earn back the trust he had lost.

But as night fell, unease settled over the temple like a dark cloud. Luis couldn't shake the feeling that Diodora was already plotting their downfall, and the looming threat kept his heart racing.

"Stay vigilant, everyone," he reminded them as they prepared for the night watch. "If Diodora comes, we'll be ready."

Luis took his place at one of the watch points, his mind racing with thoughts of what lay ahead. He had to keep his allies safe, even if it meant facing the demons of his past and the darkness that threatened to engulf them all.
