The hidden underground facility was located in the backyard of Wayne Manor. According to Alfred's introduction, this place was once used by the Wayne family to help enslaved individuals escape persecution during a dark chapter in history.
This history was consistent with the Wayne family's longstanding ethos of service—to Gotham City and to those in need. During the Great Depression, the Waynes played a pivotal role in saving Gotham's economy. In this timeline, their efforts forced the League of Shadows, led by Ra's al Ghul, to abandon their plan of economic collapse and turn to more direct methods of destruction.
When Kara arrived with Alfred, she found Bruce in a slump.
"What happened to him?" Kara asked Alfred.
Bruce raised his head and answered before Alfred could. "If you'd been crushed by a burning beam just over an hour ago, you'd be in my condition too."
Kara raised an eyebrow. "Sounds like you had one too many drinks," she remarked, her tone casual but teasing, as she let her gaze wander around the dimly lit space.
Bruce chuckled dryly but didn't argue. The fire wasn't alcohol-induced, but explaining that felt pointless.
Kara's attention shifted to a workbench, where she picked up Batman's iconic cowl. Removing her glasses, she tried it on, glancing at her reflection in the polished metal of a nearby surface. The sight was both amusing and bizarre—she looked like a makeshift superhero, or perhaps someone cosplaying on a whim.
"You debut as a Supergirl but end up looking like a female Batman," she joked silently to herself, amused by the novelty.
Turning around, she struck a mock-serious pose and asked, "How do I look?"
Bruce smirked but gave an honest critique. "It'd work better if your hair wasn't sticking out."
Kara rolled her eyes. "You're such a buzzkill." She grabbed Batman's cape, draping it over her shoulders and tucking her long golden hair beneath it. "Now?"
Bruce nodded in approval. "That'll let you blend into the shadows just fine."
Kara sighed, suddenly unimpressed. "Exactly why I'd never want to be 'Batgirl.' Sneaking around in the dark isn't exactly thrilling."
She discarded the cowl and cape, turning serious. "Alright, Bruce. What's the deal with this League of Shadows? Alfred only gave me the broad strokes."
Bruce leaned forward, detailing the situation as he worked on modifying a suit for her. According to him, the League, led by Ra's al Ghul, aimed to purge Gotham by poisoning the entire city. Their method? Dispersing Scarecrow's fear toxin through the city's water supply, vaporized using a stolen microwave emitter.
Kara frowned. "You're telling me someone in your company thought it was a good idea to build a weapon like that?"
Bruce shrugged. "When I regain full control of Wayne Enterprises, the weapons division will be the first thing I dismantle. But that doesn't change the fact that it's out there now."
Kara shook her head. "I was just venting, Bruce. Don't take it personally."
Alfred interjected before they could bicker further. "Perhaps you two could save the sparring for after Gotham isn't on the brink of annihilation?"
Both Kara and Bruce exchanged a glance, then smirked in unison.
"Fine," Bruce conceded. "So here's the plan: Ra's plans to distribute the toxin through the sewers. By using the microwave emitter, they'll vaporize the contaminated water, turning it into a gas that'll engulf the city."
Kara raised a skeptical eyebrow. "Hold on. Wouldn't that thing also vaporize the water inside people's bodies? Isn't it basically a human microwave?"
Bruce paused, clearly considering the implications for the first time. "...Maybe that's part of their intent. Gotham's destruction, in their eyes, must be total."
"That's... horrifying," Kara muttered.
Bruce returned to his workbench, putting the finishing touches on the suit he was crafting for Kara. The suit bore a resemblance to his own, though tailored to fit her frame and modified to accommodate her unique skillset.
Once it was ready, Alfred helped Kara into the battle suit. As she adjusted the armor, she asked, "So, what's your brilliant plan?"
Bruce looked at her, deadpan. "Simple. I need you to help me stop Ra's and his League of Shadows."
"That's your plan?" Kara asked, incredulous. "Bruce, I know you're the detective here, but could you maybe add a little detail?"
Bruce smirked faintly. "You interrupted me, remember? We'll infiltrate their operation, recover the emitter, and neutralize the League. Simple doesn't mean easy."
Kara sighed but nodded. "Fine. Just promise me this: if we get through this, please stop letting your company make city-destroying devices."
Bruce grinned faintly. "Deal."
With that, Gotham's unlikely duo prepared to face Ra's al Ghul and his League, determined to prevent the city's annihilation.
