Chapter 292: Keep Calm and Carry On

I didn’t have a word for it, other than maybe ‘wifey sense’ but, call it what you will, I knew something was wrong. Over years of exposure, I’d gotten to the point of being able to read him like a cereal box.
It wasn’t a small thing either like we had been through before. Ellis was far too quiet. Both like something was bothering him deeply, and he was already thinking about the best way to handle it.
The kids were in the car with us, Declan driving us back to the house, Kevin up there with him acting as navigator, while Luke took Lynn, Carl, and Anthony in the other car.
Had the situation been different, I would have asked him what was up right then and there. Though I knew him better than to ask something unpleasant around the kids. He wouldn’t answer and, frustrating as it was, he was probably right too.
