My hand still stung a little as Ellis held his cheek, looking at me with an expression of disbelief. A feeling I more or less shared. He would probably have to spank me for that, but I didn’t care. It was what came naturally from him being such a disloyal ass.

“What do you mean you’re leaving?”

“I can’t let them win. I want you all to be safe and I agree this is the best place for all of you, but I have to go back to the house.”

The rage that had been simmering from that fateful day he took the kids for donuts without telling me came up again. Mirroring the time when I was ready to stab someone. There weren’t any knives around, thankfully, and I made myself focus before I did something we would both regret.

“How can you do this? You’re going to leave me alone with three kids at a time like this? How could you?”
