The morning flew by in the blink of an eye.
The first day's early class drifted past in a haze, with Hikigaya's continuous daydreaming and his attempts to mask his lack of focus with a dead fish stare.
Of course, he wasn't completely oblivious to his surroundings.
For instance, the teachers at this school were exceedingly enthusiastic during lessons, showing no signs of sternness towards the students. Even when Sudo slept through the entire class, the teacher made no effort to intervene, opting for complete leniency. This laissez-faire approach left many diligent students disheartened.
Given that this school boasts the highest university admission and employment rates, such behaviour seemed out of place. It was hard to reconcile this with the school's esteemed reputation in the community.
Most attributed it to the school's policy of allowing students the freedom to attend or skip classes as they wished, a result of its emphasis on personal autonomy.
Hikigaya, however, watched with a detached gaze, having already deduced the only plausible explanation behind these oddities.
He simply wanted the morning classes to end quickly, so he could finally meet the person who held all the answers.
Ding-dong, ding-dong.
The bell signalling the end of class rang out. The entire class transitioned into lunchtime with an unusually relaxed atmosphere.
Students scattered, forming groups with acquaintances and heading off to eat.
Those left behind were the solitary individuals without companions.
As one of these loners, Hikigaya wasn't bothered by the lack of attention. In fact, he found it convenient for his plans.
However, a sudden voice came from behind him:
"Do you have something you need to do?"
Horikita Suzune had noticed Hikigaya's unusual behaviour and couldn't help but ask.
"Of course, I'm going to have lunch," Hikigaya replied curtly. He had given up trying to explain the truth to Horikita before she had a chance to notice his hints.
After all, he couldn't be sure Horikita would remain rational upon learning the full story and not act recklessly, worsening the situation.
"Eh? Going to lunch alone?"
"Is there a problem with that?"
"No, actually, I think it's quite good. Instead of wasting precious time on meaningless socializing, it's better to focus on oneself."
Horikita spoke without hesitation, clearly seeing Hikigaya as someone similar to herself. However, Hikigaya had never thought of Horikita in this way.
From the start, he had felt that Horikita was not like him at all.
If anything, Ayanokouji seemed more akin to both Horikita and himself…
"Anyway, I'll be going now."
"Goodbye."
Horikita said farewell in a calm tone.
Her attitude left Hikigaya puzzled.
Was this how friends conversed?
It seemed a bit too indifferent…
As Hikigaya left the classroom, he noticed another solitary figure—a girl with pink hair sitting alone, pulling a bread roll from her bag.
Although he didn't know her name through normal means, Hikigaya had memorized the seating chart and recalled her name—Sakura Airi.
He also knew from a previous incident at the electronics store that Sakura secretly worked as an online "idol." Online, her appearance was far more provocative than in reality.
"…"
Hikigaya quickly banished those unclean thoughts from his mind.
As a gentleman, he felt it was his duty to rescue her from any potential trouble and avoid becoming a problematic individual himself.
At that moment, he almost felt like a masked hero!
I could use a knight's belt right now; I'm itching to transform and defeat the flashy monsters!
"Do… do you need something?"
Sakura Airi looked up at Hikigaya but kept her head down, her introverted nature making it hard for her to engage in normal conversations with others.
"Are you… Sakura Airi?" Hikigaya asked, trying to sound as non-threatening as possible.
"Eh?"
Sakura's expression froze, clearly taken aback that Hikigaya knew her name directly.
"Ahem, you might find this odd or even a bit unpleasant, but from a place of genuine concern, I suggest you avoid the electronics store at this school. If you must go, make sure to wear a mask and sunglasses to conceal your appearance."
"Well, that's all I have to say. Goodbye."
Without giving Sakura Airi a chance to respond, Hikigaya fled the scene like a hero from a tokusatsu show evading a monster.
As Hikigaya hurried away, Sakura Airi watched him in confusion, her mind filled with a vague, unnameable feeling.
After all, Hikigaya was the first person to approach her and speak since she had arrived at this school.
Even though his words were strange, they left her with a sense she hadn't experienced before, especially since he knew her name…
"Who… who was he again?"
Unfortunately, due to Hikigaya's deliberate effort to blend into the background, Sakura Airi couldn't recall much about him, not even his name, leaving her with a look of regret.
Ahhhh!!!
What did I just do?!
Is it too late to find a time machine?
I need to stop my past self from a few seconds ago!!
Hikigaya paced through the corridor, mentally berating himself for his meddlesome actions.
That performance, forget being a hero in a tokusatsu show, it was more like a ridiculous passerby… Another inexplicable addition to my black history!
After a while, Hikigaya managed to compose himself.
He looked stricken and sorrowful, as if he had faced a major life setback, a sight that would make anyone feel uneasy or moved to tears.
In this state, Hikigaya arrived at the door of the first-year office, took a deep breath, and knocked.
"Come in."
The voice of Class D's homeroom teacher, Chabashira Sae, came from within. It seemed he was in the office, a stroke of luck.
"Hello, teacher."
Hikigaya entered the office, glancing around. It was divided into four areas for Classes A, B, C, and D, distinctly separated from each other.
This only strengthened Hikigaya's suspicions about the true nature of the school.
Inside, Chabashira Sae looked up with a detached expression. His appearance was quite stern, reminiscent of Hikigaya's former middle school teacher, Hiratsuka Shizuka.
However, despite their similar looks, the two were fundamentally different.
Hiratsuka Shizuka, despite her outwardly cold and aggressive demeanour, is actually a soft-hearted woman on the inside—a type who, if she were only a few years older than Hikigaya, might well be someone he'd want to bring home and marry immediately.
On the other hand, Chabashira Sae is the ultimate S-type: outwardly cold and violent, with a heart to match. If someone were unfortunate enough to marry her, they'd likely find themselves struggling to become a masochist just to cope with daily life.
One thing's for sure: Hikigaya definitely isn't the masochistic type!
