Capítulo 4: To The Gallows!

"WELL? Well? What do you think? Hot right?"

What did she think of Zaki Omidyar? Amelia tried her best to sum up the guy who represented everything she now studiously hated after Camille came back with reports on him. Too rich for his own good, too arrogant, and if given a chance, had hit-and-run potentials. When her mind strayed to the peculiar way he had made her feel by zooming off without giving her a chance to hurt him for what he did to her car, she reined it back in.

"Well?" Sarah Rodriguez, her cousin, pestered. She'd been drooling over internet pictures of Zaki Omidyar all evening.

Amelia sipped her tea, distractedly helped herself to her fifth biscuit, absentmindedly gazed at her feet, which had been propped up on a stool in front of her, and focused on her irritation. It irked her that not even a single member of her family stood by her against this bizarre marriage arrangement. This was the twenty-first century, nobody married anybody off anymore!

"Amelia!" Sarah barely shoved the phone in her face.

"Get that bitch away from me, or else I'll smash the phone against the wall." Amelia's flushed darkly. "Why the hell have you been ogling at his pictures for hours?"

"He's hot," Sarah pouted, putting away the device before Amelia made good on her threat. "I thought you would love to see what he looked like."

"If I see one more picture, I'll throw up on you." Amelia threatened again. "I don't get it. Why am I supposed to be the sacrificial lamb? Dad gambles our fortune away and I'm supposed to swoop in to save the day? Do I look like I own a goddamn cape?"

"Can you lose that frown? You could end up with wrinkles which have wrinkles if you keep it up." Sarah informed thoughtfully. "If you could just take a moment to better analyze the situation, you would realize that your parents are doing you a huge favor."

Amelia flashed her a look of such filthy warning that their subordinates knew all too well. "Are you dumb?" She shook her head. "Don't bother answering that, we both know you are. How's being a trophy wife to some Iranian businessman a huge favor?"

"I may be a tad bit unknowledgeable in certain areas that I find mentally exhausting but not in this case, cousin dearest. We both know that my uncle's gambling problem isn't the only reason why our family is on the verge of bankruptcy. You have an indestructible penchant for spending money on everything and anything."

"You dirty hypocrite!" Amelia pointed a finger at her. "That's rich from someone who maxed out a platinum card in two hours."

Sarah snorted. "You've done worse, Amy, but that's not the point. We can't be poor."

"Why the hell should that burden be on me?"

"What, you think I wouldn't jump at an opportunity like this had your parents pitched the idea to me?" Sarah scoffed. "Have you even taken a good look...no, a glance, at your husband-to-be? No, you haven't."

"Yes, I have. And I wasn't impressed." Amelia retorts. "It may be because all I saw was a devil with short red horns and a shriveled tail."

Sarah reached for her phone and pulled up his picture again. "Look again."

Amelia reached for it but the device was snatched from what Sarah believed to be harm's way. Annoyed at being ganged up on, she stood up and began to prowl through her father's home office. Originally a library, it was still dominated by the hand-made wooden bookcase that stretched along the entire length of the back wall. She'd come in here to escape her parent's nagging and Sarah had offered to keep her company. She should have known Sarah was probably sent to pick up from where they left off.

"You're arranged to marry one of the most eligible bachelor both America and Iran have to offer." Sarah rambled on. "He's filthy rich, so your lifestyle doesn't have to change. It only gets better, if you ask me. You get to wake up to this carefully put-together drop-dead gorgeous billionaire, every freaking day of your life and pop out cute babies for him. I don't see what the problem is."

"I don't like being told what to do." Amelia crossed her arms under her bosom. "That's the problem. I don't want to be...poor, either." She feigned a gag at the word. "So, I'll find a rich man of my choosing."

Sarah chuckled. "What rich man? You've sent a truckload of them running with your attitude."

"That was when I still had a large fortune to fall back on." Amelia countered and shrugged. "I thought I would marry for love. But now, am sure I can be a bit....amiable."

"No one is going to marry you, Amelia." Sarah deadpanned. "At least not in time to avoid the scandal of uncle's bankruptcy."

Amelia bit her nails, a nervous habit she'd failed to get rid of. "I'll get away from this arrangement. You'll see. Once I make my intentions known, men would be lining up for my hand."

"What's really going on here?" Sarah arched a brow at her then stared helplessly at Zaki's pictures again. "How would you explain being a virgin at 29 and not being remotely attracted to this sex on legs? What's it about him that makes you so skittish?"

"Don't be foolish." She chided emotionlessly. "Uninterested is what I am. He almost ran me off the highway and left without checking to see what he'd done. Marriage to someone like that is a terrible idea. You can't see this because your brain is the size of a peanut."

"I'm not stupid!" Sarah yelled.

Amelia stared back at her in unbelief. "That's all you got from all I just said?"

"Yes. I'm not stupid," she repeated, arms crossed in defiance.

A few minutes passed and Amelia groaned when Sarah didn't lose her bitter countenance. "Ugh, fine. It wasn't my intention to imply you are stupid."

"Yes, it was." Sarah snorted. "But I forgive you because I choose to be the bigger person. You should do the same with your future husband. He's coming over for dinner tomorrow. Does uncle know he was the driver who ruined your car?"

"No. But even if he did, it won't change anything. Dad is the Omidyar's family bitch." she frowned. "Another reason I won't marry into that family. I'll marry a rich frog, a rich monkey, a rich cow, goat, imbecile, rich anything but him." She puffed.
