You stare in the mirror, looking at yourself, waiting on what will be the biggest decision making moments of your entire existence. Your niece's treatments cost two hundred thousand dollars.
You brush off nothing from your clothes. You are tensed up and you can feel it. You pause for a minute, stare deeper into the mirror, hoping to see your soul through the mirror and wonder what becomes of it when you've finally moved on with this decision.
You start thinking out loud, "Nora's treatment costs three hundred thousand dollars, and she needs this procedure more than anything. I am the only family she has left, and I need to do this for her. No, I must do this for her."
You pick up the brush from the side table, and run it through your brown long curls, "Luckily, my friend Jane put in a word for me with Madam Beee. She'll solve all my problems if only I pay a steep price."
You breathe out, pick up the brown beaded necklace to pair it with your brown denim vest, and walk out the door.
You sit across Madam Beee, in her dimly lit office, while she looks at you like a hungry Lion.
"So you're here to sell your virginity." She asked, looking you up and down, "in exchange for three hundred thousand dollars?"
"Yes. That is true."
She moves closer to you, leaning her jewelry-filled hands on the big brown desk, you fidget in your seat, one can hear your heart racing from all the way to the door or so you thought. "What if she's hearing it too?" You thought to yourself, colors draining in your face, and your palms sweating so bad.
"What is your name darling?" Madam Beee asked, leaning back on her big leather seat.
"Juliana."
"A fine, suitable name. I have very high standards for the girls I take on, and my clients do as well."
Feeling like you just recovered your confidence, "Madam Beee, I don't think you'll find better quality than me." You blurt out.
A slow smile, one can say to be evil curls up Madam Beee's lips, " Sassy. I like it. You'll need a backbone while working with a man like Carl Tate."
"Carl Tate?"
She slides a folder with the name CARL TATE boldly written on it.
"This is the man who will be purchasing your virginity." Madam Beee said, while searching your face for any counter reaction.
You stare at the closed file, your heart thumping, "oh my God, i hope he's quick. The faster we get this done with, the better. Then I can forget about all this."
You open the file, your eyes widen, taking in Carl Tate. "Woah, the Greek gods got nothing on him. And he wants to pay for my virginity?"
"Not just your virginity. You have to marry him for a year, and have his baby."
"What?!!!!!" You screamed in fright
"Look darling, you're a very pretty girl, but your virginity alone isn't worth three hundred thousand dollars. If you want to make this kind of cash fast, your best bet is Carl Tate." Madam Beee snapped
"But..but..he should pay more than this! Getting married and having a baby is on a whole different level. I don't even know the first thing about being a mom." You can feel your stomach tightening, just at the thought of becoming a mother
"Others would do this for even much less. This is a generous offer."
"I don't know. A baby is a big deal! And besides, I don't even have the time for marriage and baby or babies. Nora comes first! Always."
"Yes. And to save her life, you have to give a life. That sounds like only but just a fair deal to me." She taps the file with Carl Tate's face on it and slides is back to you.
"Think carefully, Juliana. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity, and besides, it's just for a year. You don't have anything to loose." Madam Beee says in a softer tone.
You persue the contract included in the folder, 'MARRIAGE CONTRACT AND A BABY VIA ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION VALID FOR ONE YEAR'.
You eye the file, then scribbled your signature on the space provided, "here, signed. It's a deal."
"And just like that, I'm Carl Tate's fiancee and baby mama." You roll your eyes at the sound of your own sarcasm
"You made the right choice."
"I hope so."
You leave Madam Beee's office and get in a taxi. You take a long breathe, pulled out your phone to see a voicemail from Dr. Martins, Nora's doctor.
You clicked, and the beep goes off, "Juliana, you have to get to the hospital quick. It's Nora. She's refusing the clinical trial."
"What?!"
You rush to Nora's hospital, straight up to her room. Immediately you opened the door, and she sees you, she scoffs, folded her arms and turned away looking out the window.
You approached her slowly, "Nora, you need to do the trial."
"No. I won't. We can't afford it! YOU CAN'T AFFORD IT!!" Nora screamed
"Baby girl, listen. This trial is the only way for you to recover fully. We have to at least give it a try." You look into her eyes, holding her hands, giving it a soft squeeze.
She yanks out of your squeeze gently, looking up at you, "No. I'm tired of being a burden."
Tears swells up her eyes, but she blinks it off and continues, "Dr Martins told me the procedure alone costs three hundred thousand dollars, out of your pocket. We don't have that kind of money."
"Actually,..." you pause just as you're about to say something different. "You're being a brat and I'm not telling you. You need to do the trial. Money doesn't matter."
Nora's face screws up in anger, "yes it does!. If I die, you'll be left in debts up to your eyeballs!"
You yank Nora's arm closer to you
"Ow!"
"Listen. If you die and I didn't do anything to save you, my life will be haunted forever. You're doing the trial and that's final."
Nora rolls on the bed, while turning her back towards you, pulls the sheets over her body and l
et's out a frustrated sigh
You glance at your 16 year old niece, you pat her legs stretched out from under the sheets, and walk out.
