Ash looked at the system panel and sighed. "Wow... I'm really weak."
If he remembered correctly, the average strength of an E-rank was 20. Yet, his current stats were pitiful. They didn't even come close to what Ash had in the final chapters of the novel.
And why was his charm stat so absurdly high?
"Hey, System, this '50% merging' thing—is that what you were talking about before?"
"Yes, Host. The merging process of your soul with Ash's is only 50% complete," the System replied.
"And how do I complete the other 50%?"
"If you wish, I can initiate the process by transferring Ash's memories to you," the System explained.
"Wait, that's it? Transferring memories is all it takes to complete the soul merge?"
"Yes, Host. The only thing you lack is Ash's memories because your soul already belongs to this world."
Ash froze. His stomach churned, an unsettling unease crawling up his spine. "What... what do you mean my soul already belongs to this world?"
The System hesitated.
Ash's heart raced. He leaned forward, gripping the desk so tightly his knuckles turned white. "Answer me. Now."
"Host..." The System's voice softened, almost cautious. "When your soul entered this body, it did not replace Ash's. It was Ash's."
Ash blinked, his mind stumbling over the words. "What are you trying to say?"
"You are not a foreigner in this world. You are its native. Ash von Ravenscar—the man—and you—the soul—were always one and the same."
The words hit him like a thunderclap, leaving his thoughts in disarray. His heart pounded violently against his ribs, his breath shallow. "What... what the hell does that mean?"
"It means you have always belonged to this world, Host," the System explained, its tone firm but not unkind. "The memories you lack are not someone else's—they are your own. Completing the merging process will not change who you are. It will only restore you to who you've always been."
Ash staggered back, his legs nearly giving out beneath him. His hands trembled as he braced himself against the desk. "No... no, that can't be right." His voice cracked. "That can't be right!"
"It is the truth, Host," the System replied, unmoving against his rising panic.
Ash's thoughts spiraled out of control. The fragments of his identity—Richard's memories, Ash's body, and now this—collided and cracked under the weight of the revelation.
"You're lying," he hissed, his voice shaking. "This is some kind of trick!"
"If I wished to deceive you, Host, I wouldn't have told you this."
Ash's breathing quickened, his mind clawing for an escape, a reason to dismiss the System's words. But deep down, something clicked—a piece of him that recognized the truth, no matter how much he wanted to deny it.
"System..." His voice dropped, laced with desperation. "If I've always belonged here, why the hell would the World System want to kill me?"
The System hesitated again. "Because, Host, your soul carries the life essence of the other world you lived in until now."
Ash's chest tightened. "Life essence? What the hell does that even mean?"
"Every world has a unique life essence," the System explained. "It is the energy that sustains all living beings within it. When you lived in your previous world, that world's life essence became a part of your soul. When you died and your soul crossed into this world, you brought that essence with you."
"And that makes me a threat?"
"Yes," the System admitted. "The foreign essence disrupts this world's balance. The World System's purpose is to maintain order and purge anomalies. That is why I was tasked with shielding you."
Ash sank into the chair, his hands shaking as he ran them through his hair. "So, I'm an anomaly. A walking contradiction that shouldn't exist."
"You exist, Host," the System said simply. "And that existence carries weight, regardless of how it came to be."
Ash's shoulders sagged as he exhaled, his mind tangled in conflicting emotions. "So whoever sent you... they want me to know this, don't they?"
"That appears to be the case. Normally, I wouldn't have permission to share such information unless instructed otherwise."
Ash stared blankly at the wall, his mind fractured into a thousand different questions, fears, and possibilities. He clenched his fists until his nails bit into his palms, grounding himself against the storm.
"System..." His voice was hoarse, his throat dry. "If I go through with this merge, will it get rid of the foreign essence?"
"Not entirely," the System admitted. "But it will harmonize your soul with this world".
Ash's breaths slowed as a cold determination settled in his chest. His existence was an affront to the natural order, but he refused to let that dictate his fate.
"Alright, System," he said, his voice steadier now. "We'll do this. One step at a time."
"Understood, Host," the System responded.
"Initiating memory transfer now. Please brace yourself. This process may be overwhelming."
Ash barely had a moment to prepare before his vision blurred, and a torrent of memories, emotions, and sensations surged into his mind like a flood breaking through a dam.
