-Pov of Doran martell seventh moon 288AC
When I read the letter that had been sent to me from the capital, it was difficult to believe at first. The Prussian invader seems to have finally exhausted Arryn's patience, as the Hand of the false King Robert was calling upon all his great lords to mobilize against him due to his transgressions against the Faith of the Seven. But the question was simple: why now?
The Prussians have been constantly attacking the Faith in their lands, making life impossible for the septons to continue performing ceremonies and doing everything necessary to keep the Faith strong in the territories they've conquered.
Without a doubt, this meant that our deal with the Prussian was broken, not because he wouldn't fulfill it, but because by the time my sister brings back the rightful king, they will already be gone, and we cannot afford to miss out on the division of the rich Prussian cities.
It's obvious what will happen when the Prussians are defeated: everything they've built in recent years will be divided like a cake among all the lords. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them are gathering all their knights and trying to conquer as many cities as possible so that, when negotiations begin, they can keep the taxes or industry from the belt of cities along the Mander.
At the very least, we should try to take all the southern territories of the Prussians, as the gold mines that once belonged to Dorne will now return to our hands, and with that gold, we can hire mercenaries or gain support from some nobles when the time comes for the restoration of the Targaryens.
Although I would prefer not to support the Baratheons, doing nothing means that, most likely, the gold mines of Dorne would fall into the hands of the Lannisters, the Baratheons, or some noble that the Lannisters have chosen to extract that gold.
"So, war against the Prussians... I hope we meet that son of a bitch who humiliated us. He'll regret it," Oberyn said as he read the letter that Lord Arryn had sent us.
"That's right. This destroys our plan for the return of our nephew to his rightful throne. No matter how good the conditions are for the return of the rightful king, few will rally under the banner of a king who is just a child. It's better to wait for a new opportunity in the future and recover the gold to finance the future war," I responded to my brother.
"Do you think their fortresses have enough men to stop us? Or did he take them to fight against the Baratheons, thinking we wouldn't participate in the division of their territories?" Oberyn said as he began preparing his weapons for war.
"I don't know. When we are in the Torentine, we'll find out. But if he left the fortresses abandoned, it will be very easy for us to take the southern cities and wait for the Baratheons and their treacherous allies to take all the damage fighting the Prussian army. We must avoid heavy casualties; it was difficult for our lords and for us to rebuild our forces after sending thousands to die for Rhaegar," I told Oberyn.
"I suppose that's why we want to collaborate with the 'Prince' of Dragonstone in defeating the Lord of the Stepstones, to use our merchant ships to land in The Reach, avoiding a direct siege of the cities and forcing the Prussians to abandon their fortresses to stop us, right?" Oberyn said, looking at the letters we exchanged with Stannis to unite our fleets.
"That's right, so it doesn't matter much if the fortresses are full of Prussian men. We'll just ignore them and go for the cities, which should be defenseless," I replied to my brother.
"So, nothing to worry about," Oberyn responded, taking his spear.
Then, the sounds of battle began to be heard near our palace. Oberyn and I looked at each other as the shouts and clash of metal grew clearer.
"My prince, ships bearing the flag of the Lord of The Reach have landed on the beaches and are attacking us," one of our guards said, entering our chamber.
"Well... it seems he prefers to be the first to betray. That has merit," Oberyn said.
"Damn it, Oberyn, take this seriously. Our entire family is here in the Water Gardens. If they capture us, they'll practically force us to remain neutral for the entire war," I said, very annoyed, preparing to flee.
The battle seemed to be drawing closer, as the sounds of battle and pain became much clearer.
"We have to get out of here and call for reinforcements from the nearby cities. They can't burn this palace. Find my sons and daughters, as well as Oberyn's daughters, and get them out of here quickly," I told my guards while taking some historical objects of House Martell and walking toward the stables.
All our guards were gathering on the walls closest to the sea, while Oberyn and I began to withdraw from the palace with our families as the battle continued to control this important place for the Martells.
Once we were on horseback and our family was evacuating to Sunspear, I felt safer, and we approached to observe how the battle was unfolding.
In the sea, the gigantic Prussian ships could be seen, as well as the Prussian formations approaching the walls of our palace.
Several minutes passed when we saw the Prussians storm the walls, and the defenders were being defeated. We then observed how our palace began to burn.
Slowly, forces from nearby cities and lords arrived, and we advanced to try to save what we could of the Water Gardens, which had helped House Martell endure the hottest days of summer.
We immediately began to search for the Prussian forces, but they had already withdrawn to the safety of their ships and had even taken their dead, so they had plenty of time since they set everything on fire.
We tried to extinguish the fires, and I stood watching the Prussian ships as they began to withdraw.
"Doran... those ships are heading south... they're not returning to the Stepstones," Oberyn said, pointing at the Prussian ships.
"Sunspear and many guards are here. It's feasible they might try to take the fortress," I said again, nervously.
"Damn it, then why did we move our family out of danger just to send them somewhere equally dangerous?" Oberyn said, and he went to find the men who were helping to extinguish the fires.
With a sizable group of guards, we returned to Sunspear, bringing with us all the guards who had come to our aid after receiving the call for help we sent when they first attacked us.
When we arrived at our destination, everything seemed normal. In fact, everything was normal. There was no Prussian presence anywhere, nor any ships in the area.
We began to relax and prepare to join the fight against the Prussians, when some survivors from Plankytown arrived on horseback, saying that the Prussian navy had assaulted the town by sea and, since many of the guards had ridden out to help at the Water Gardens, it was an easy victory for the Prussians.
Oberyn stared at me.
"Ah, their plan was always the city... Damn it... we fell for it, they went for the ships," Oberyn said, already tired of this cursed day.
We sent more ravens informing the local lords that their forces were now needed to liberate the port city before the Prussians could fortify themselves in the largest city in all of Dorne.
But while our forces were gathering, we marched towards the city and encountered thousands of its inhabitants outside the walls. The farmlands surrounding the river were burning, sending up thick smoke that was visible from a distance.
The number of people who had been driven from their homes was overwhelming, as the Prussians had burned all the houses outside the citadel that protected the port and had likely expelled everyone living within the walls as well.
Dozens of Prussian warships could also be seen anchored at sea and in the ports, indicating that their forces must be considerable.
As we approached the citadel walls, we were greeted by a Prussian dressed in white clothes and steel armor, displaying medals on his chest. He stood with his hands on his hips, looking down at us.
"Ah... the degenerate Martells. I heard you ran like the dogs you are from my attack instead of staying and fighting... Pathetic... Tell me, what do you want in my city?" the Prussian said in the most arrogant tone possible.
"What is the reason for this treacherous attack? We have no bad relations with your lord," I said to the Prussian.
"Spare me your lies, degenerate. I know perfectly well what you were planning: to attack my king while he deals with crushing the Westerosi vermin from the north," the Prussian responded in the same tone.
"We had no intention of helping the Baratheons, if you forget, they overthrew..." I tried to say.
"I don't like being lied to! It's known that it's in your sneaky and treacherous nature to lie, but you can't hide the truth. The movement of merchants doesn't lie. Three days ago, you began preparing to mobilize your men for battle, and as a result, hundreds of merchant ships changed course to sell war supplies," the Prussian said, looking at me with a smile that made me want to punch him.
"You're going to pay for this, you damned Prussian," Oberyn shouted.
"Well, if it isn't the infamous fornicator. Your guards were lucky to withstand the initial onslaught; I would have liked to meet your daughters, but perhaps in the future... if you leave your castles unprotected, I might have the honor of meeting them," the Prussian said in his arrogant tone.
Never in my life had I seen Oberyn so angry. It seemed that at any second he would try to scale the walls to kill him.
"But anyway, your attempt to betray us failed... because that's what you are, a group of failures. You failed to keep the Targaryens on the throne, you failed to protect your home, and you ran like cowards instead of accepting death with honor. But it was within my plans for you to flee. Killing all of you would have been a personal pleasure, but I'm satisfied with a victory... and thank you, 'Prince' Doran, for so many ships. How kind of you not to leave guards to prevent it," the Prussian said, continuing to mock us.
"I sincerely hope you don't let your dogs starve. they have no food, no shelter, and in a few days, they'll starve to death..." the Prussian officer said, pointing to all the people he had expelled from their homes.
"When I capture you, I'm going to impale you with my spear, you miserable wretch," Oberyn shouted furiously.
"Of course you'd like that, but it won't be today, it won't be tomorrow, and it may never happen. I have supplies for several months of siege and naval superiority. I can bring in supplies by ship whenever I wish. Goodbye, you pair of failures. Have a good night; I'm going to sleep comfortably," the Prussian said, as his guards ascended the walls.
We retreated to the safety of the camp, and I saw how furious Oberyn was, thinking of ways to kill the Prussian.
"We have to assault the citadel as soon as possible. That bastard can't escape," Oberyn said, pacing the tent, letting his anger speak for him.
"We don't know how many there are, and we're still waiting for all the nearby forces to gather," I tried to say when we saw the flames consuming the citadel.
"What the hell do the Prussians use that can burn stone so easily?" I said, watching as the fire consumed the citadel while the Prussian ships returned to their islands.
