Maybe he was going crazy. Carefully he nudged the part in his brain where his connection to Nash was. He didn’t want anyone to know he could sense Nash in there, and he wasn’t sure if the people that had arrived were humans or not. After having spent time with Gilbert, Ellis, and Nash he was afraid of what someone could find out simply by looking at him or smelling him or whatever Gilbert did when he got into his head.

Lights fastened to the wall of the hut came to life, and the back door opened. Arlo moved away from the bars and stood in the middle of the cage as Rob exited the hut. Curling his hands into fists, Arlo drew in a careful breath. Did Mama know what Rob was doing?

Rob tugged at a string, a red satin band, and a small white-haired woman stepped outside. The red satin tied around her wrists. She was young, couldn’t be more than twenty, flawless with her porcelain white skin. The air froze in Arlo’s lungs.

She was like him.
