Capítulo 8: Chapter 8

Cold, this was the only information in this body of water.

Lin's acid-injectors and cone-shaped cells had all been sacrificed in the spreading frost, leaving only 91 diggers alive. They formed a circle so that Lin's observers wouldn't be affected by the frost.

Outside this circle was a world of ice. Through the transparent bodies of these diggers, Lin could see that it was completely different from the deep blue liquid water from before, this was a still, crystalline world.

Lin's community had suffered heavy losses under this seemingly beautiful crystalline world. Although she didn't know how the diggers managed to avoid being frozen in the end, Lin didn't want to stay here any longer.

Lin had the diggers begin to move to see if they could find a way to leave this place.

Some of the diggers were stuck to the ice, but they only needed to wiggle a little to break free.

These diggers seemed to have evolved, their previous cells would be instantly frozen if they came into contact with the ice, but these diggers were much better off.

However, as they moved, Lin could clearly feel the chilling sensation of their outer membranes coming into contact with the ice …

This also felt like pain, but unlike normal pain, it didn't give Lin a strong desire to escape from the pain, instead, it made Lin want to curl up into a ball without moving at all.

However, this sensation didn't affect Lin's movements at all.

This entire area had been frozen, the only body of water that was still usable for swimming was the small area where Lin's 92 cells were located. All the water around them had been frozen into impassable ice.

Perhaps I can dig it out?

Lin tried to have the diggers use the sawtooth on their surface to scrape away the ice, but other than creating a few ice shards, this didn't help at all. Trying to break through the ice that had frozen this entire body of water was practically impossible.

Lin didn't know what to do.

The drastic decrease in the number of her community had caused Lin's intelligence to decrease by a lot, making it impossible for her to think about anything too complicated.

But in reality, even if Lin had the intelligence of over a thousand communities, she still wouldn't be able to do anything. At a time like this, she could only wait.

Luck or death.

After an unknown amount of time, although Lin knew the word 'time', she didn't know the concept behind it, but Lin could feel the effects of time on her.

The first effect was … hunger.

For the first time, Lin felt hunger. There seemed to be a certain feeling in her mind that was calling out to her to find food to replenish the energy lost from her activities.

Lin asked the diggers to stop sawing through the ice and reduce the energy consumption by reducing their activity. It could still understand this knowledge.

However, not moving did not mean that they had stopped. The cells were still losing energy, even if it was much slower than when they were moving.

Lin continued to wait. She did what every living creature should do. When she couldn't do anything, she would stop moving and wait to see if something she could do would appear around her.

While waiting, a few diggers ran out of energy. It was a special kind of pain, different from other kinds of pain. When energy was exhausted, the cell membrane and core would slowly shrink, becoming dry and small, and finally die.

Lin allowed the other cells to consume the corpses of the exhausted cells. Their deaths bought more time for the other cells.

The phenomenon of starvation gave rise to a new idea in Lin's mind.

Every time the cells ate food, they quickly digested it and then split. They quickly consumed the energy they obtained.

But what if there was a way to store energy? If there was a way to store large amounts of energy in the cells, he wouldn't have to be afraid if he encountered such a situation again.

Lin thought of a new word … fat.

Although she didn't understand the specific meaning, the word seemed to refer to stored food.

Then, she must try to see if she could store food next time.

If she could make it out alive …

With this thought in mind, Lin remained motionless. All the cells were the same, quietly floating in the water.

The coldness was wearing away at Lin's will. The feeling of coldness made Lin want to sleep forever …

But Lin would not give up. Although the wait was long, luck would come sooner or later …

Lin's observer cells noticed a crack in the ice in front of her.

Warmth. Lin felt a different feeling from the cold. This new feeling awakened every cell in Lin's body. Lin noticed that more and more cracks were appearing on the ice …

Under Lin's gaze, these ice crystals slowly shattered into countless large ice chunks. These ice chunks also slowly shrank. Just like the process of food being digested, they became smaller and smaller until they completely disappeared into the water …

These ice crystals appeared out of thin air, froze everything, then disappeared in an instant. If it weren't for the ice fragments that hadn't completely melted yet floating around her, Lin would have thought that none of this had happened.

There were still 77 of Lin's cells left, including the observer cells. They had managed to survive this crisis.

They had a powerful resistance to the cold. Although this disaster had almost wiped out Lin's colony, Lin had also become stronger.

Lin's current mission was to find everything edible and restore her colony. Due to the loss of energy, these cells had become slow and fragile.

Lin's colony swam through the water. Although the ice had almost completely melted, the coldness still permeated the water. When Lin reached the location of the giant food from before, she saw that a layer of ice had formed on top of the white food, which seemed to have affected this place as well.

Lin had the diggers try to break the ice on top of the food, but no matter how hard they tried, they could only cut off some ice chunks. They couldn't do much damage to the ice.

Why hasn't the ice melted yet? It's so hard …

Lin didn't know why, but she could feel it again. This place was slowly becoming colder, and the ice chunks floating in the water seemed to be growing larger.

Perhaps this place would freeze again.

As soon as this thought appeared in Lin's mind, she immediately took all the cells and left this place. Lin didn't want to see the previous situation again.

Lin's only hope was to once again head into the endless Deep Blue to find new food and a new warm place.

Warm …

Lin felt it and swam towards a certain direction. The water there was different from the previous coldness, but it was warm and comfortable.

That's right, this was the direction the slime escaped in before.

Not long after the cell colony swam, Lin found the slime's figure. This behemoth also didn't escape the danger of being frozen. Its body was covered in frost, and its huge body slowly floated in the water without any signs of life.

Although it had warmed up and started to thaw, it didn't seem like it would wake up again.

Lin had the diggers move forward. The frost on the slime's body was very fragile, so the diggers easily cut it open. The still soft slime's body was exposed in front of Lin's eyes.

Eat.

This was Lin's only thought.

The diggers began to feast on the slime's body. They used the old method of cutting off countless pieces with their sawtooth and then slowly ate them. After replenishing their energy, the cold damage to the cells began to slowly disappear, and they became full of vitality again.

Then came the division, and the number of surviving diggers began to slowly increase.

But Lin didn't forget her previous thought.

It needed to store energy. Lin needed something called fat to ensure that the cells could survive without food for a long time.

There was one more thing.
