Maris held Esme in her arms, sleeping soundly when he felt someone's presence, and shut his eyes to see who it was. He saw his father, Maurice, staring down at him and Esme on the bed.

Maris panicked and rose from the bed. Maurice did not look away; the disappointment in his eyes was clear as he stepped closer to Maris and grabbed him by his neck, strangling him and making it hard for him to breathe.
