It was not a peaceful day. Today was the day that Izzy had been waiting for the last 3 months. He had signed up to be a beta tester for one of the newest and greatest virtual reality games that had ever hit the market. The name of the game was Righteous Summoning. The information about the game was hush hush, but as an avid gamer Izzy had managed to find information through his contacts on the web.
Righteous summoning was a game where they played as characters that had been summoned into a new world, they had been gifted amazing powers by the goddess of the land, and their goal was to save the world. The game was only in its infancy, and yet they already had released a beta to be tested. He had used all of his resources to gain access to this closed beta. It would be him, and 5 others who would be the pioneers of exploring this world.
Of course they implications of this were massive. He had been forced to sign a non disclosure agreement, as well as sign a contract that made him an official employee of the company. He would need to follow the orders of his superiors. These orders would be given as "quests" by the system. There would be punishments if he failed to comply, but their would be rewards as well.
The contract was for a term of 10 years. For the next 10 years he would be employed by the company, and live his entire life in the capsule that had been designed for him. He would eat sleep and shit in the capsule. However that was not all. Time in the other world did not travel at the same speed as it did in reality. Rather it traveled 10 times faster.
In other words he would spend 100 years in that world, a time that was far greater than he had spent on earth. Fortunately the company was rather aware of the trouble this would cause him. He, as well as the other 5 teenagers would receive benefits that one could not imagine. As long as they completed the assignment they would be taken care of for life. They could even continue to be employees of the company and live in the game indefinitely if they so chose.
For an otaku like him this was truly a dream
He would not be forced to interact with his peers any longer. His parents would no longer harp at him because he did not have a job or a future. He had found his life's calling. He would be able to relax in a virtual world, and live the life he had always dreamed about. This was a windfall for him, and was most definitely the turning point in his life.
His parents had strongly argued against him joining, but once they saw the benefits he would receive from the job they could only hold their tongues. In ten years he would have achieved what they had not in their 40 years of life up until now. They could only sigh and reluctantly signed the waiver with him.
The moment had been a huge relief for him. His parents had been the biggest stumbling block for him in this matters but they had eventually caved when they saw how lucrative it would be for him.
This is how he had eventually ended up being drove by his parents to top secret lab thousands of miles away from home. His parents were reluctant, and the quiet tension in the car showed their true feelings on the matter. After all he was their only child, and they would be unable to see him for 10 years. This was a heavy price for them.
Izzy stared longingly at the large building in front of him. It was an isolated facility, hundreds of miles from civilization. The facility was located in the artic tundra of Canada, and they had been forced to go through a total of 5 check points to get here. The guards were armed with military grade weapons.
The very sight of them had caused his parents to have second thoughts, but they knew it was far too late now. The contract had already been signed and sealed. They could only sigh in dismay as they were forced to get out of their car. The guards had been expecting their arrival, and quickly had shuffled them onto a bus with the other families.
They were the last to arrive, but based of the steam coming from the other vehicles the others had only just arrived as well. To be sure of his observation Izzy checked his watch. It was 9:37 a.m. they had arrived 23 minutes early. He sighed in relief as he saw this. It was alright if they were the last to arrive, as long as they were not late. The company had been extremely clear that if they did not arrive before 10 a.m. on today's date that their contract would be considered void, and he would be forced to pay a large fine and even receive jail time.
The consequences had made it clear that this was not only a game company, but had received government backing as well. This was highly unusual for a game company, but with the technology involved it was not that surprising. After all, this company had originally belonged to the military, before deciding to separate after their contract had expired. They had still maintained friendly relations, and from the looks of it were still ran by the government. All of this information was readily available on the internet, provided you knew were to look.
Izzy smiled as he looked at the other five teenagers. They would be his companions for the next 10 years, which had been explicitly stated in the contract. They would work together and form a "party". The other five teenagers did not appear to be otaku's like himself, rather they seemed almost professional in their appearances.
The first person he laid eyes on was easily recognizable from the file he had received after signing his contract. The boy was even younger than himself, and extremely scrawny. He had thick glasses and wore a black suit. His red hair was in the form of an afro. His name was Albert Teeters. He was a wiz kid in mathematics and physics. At the age of 13 he had already obtained his bachelor's in physics. He had recently graduated valedictorian with his PhD in quantum physics.
The next person I saw was John Michael's the 3rd. He was a year older than me at 17. He was already a professional MMA fighter, and had received his black belt in multiple forms of martial arts. He was tall, and had a stalky build. He had dark brown eyes and light brown hair.
The other three were girls. All three of them were famous. The most famous of the group was Celine Browning. She was an Idol, who had already produced 3 different albums. Her voice could be considered a gift from god, and not a single person in the world could be said to dislike her music. She was your typical blonde bombshell. She was tall and had bright blue eyes.
The next was one of the youngest Olympian champions. Her name was Shawna Young and placed gold in the javelin throw. She too was blond, but was not nearly as tall as Celine. She had brown eyes, and her body was not nearly as well developed. However she had a sturdy body, and muscles that could not be considered unattractive.
The final girl was much like myself. She was a. Nobody who had been randomly selected. This did not mean she was not impressive, she just paled in comparison to the other four. She was above average in all regards. She had a 4.0, and was a member of both volleyball and swim team. She was still in high school, but could be considered already selected into an ivy league school. Her name was Alexis Black.
Izzy could not help but shake his head at them. He could not compare to any of them. He had no sports under his belt, and had actually tested out of school at the age of 13. He had worked his ass off for the last three years, and had graduated from an online school in computer programming. He was very antisocial, and preferred to not interact with people, unless of course it was online or in a game. This is what made this opportunity so attractive for him. As the entirety of the next 10 years would only involve interaction with these 5 people and a lot of Artificial intelligence, maybe he would finally be able to break out of his shell.
It had to be said that even though he was an antisocial weeb, he still took care of his body. He had a gym at home and took care to work out every day. His body could not compare to either Shawna or John's, but it was far above any of the others except for Alexis, who was on par with his own.
Because of these factors he did not feel inferior to those elites around him, even if he was not up to par with them in their individual fields. Much like Alexis he was someone who was above average at everything, but did not stand out in any individual field. The only thing that could be said was that he and her were on opposite ends of the social spectrum.
