"Are you sure about returning to school this quickly, Oni-san?"
Rika asked, concern evident on her face. It had only been more than a week since Hayato broke his leg, yet miraculously, it was almost fully healed, and he could walk without the help of his crutch. Such a fracture should have taken at least 4-6 weeks to heal completely. The doctors were bewildered as well.
"As you can see, I can already walk. Besides, it's not good to skip school for so long."
Rika reluctantly agreed, though the worry in her eyes remained. Seeing her this concerned, Hayato smiled and gently placed his hand on her head.
When Hayato arrived at school, nobody paid much attention to him anymore. It seemed the buzz from his video had already died down over the past few days, and now everything was back to normal. However, a few of his classmates, more accurately the group of girls who asked about his video first, asked him why he had been absent.
'Did the class teacher not inform them about the reason for my absence?' Hayato wondered, doubting their intentions.
However, he didn't question them and told them the truth. They expressed their concern and relief that he had recovered so quickly. He encountered them at the shoe locker area, and from there, they walked with him to the classroom. During that short time, they asked him various questions—nothing serious, just casual ones like which middle school he attended and what kind of food he liked.
Hayato also came to understand that this group of three girls were what you might call extroverts. Also like semi-gyarus—semi, because they didn't wear the heavy makeup that gyarus usually favored. Moreover, These girls are drawn to anything they found interesting and weren't shy about approaching others to openly express their curiosity.
'Extroverts are scary.'
Hayato thought after engaging in a conversation with them. Though he only answered in brief, his reserved nature unable to match their extroverted energy, even in his dreams. He also came to know their names.
The girl with the dark blue bobcut hairstyle and dark blue eyes, who was usually seen in the middle of their group, is Nakamura Ami.
The one with brown pigtails and orange eyes is Tomioka Shinobu. She has the most petite body among the three.
And lastly, the girl with slightly curly black hair and light green eyes is Tenka Misumi.
They effortlessly began calling him by his first name and urged him to do the same with them. Hayato didn't mind, so he agreed. However, this only solidified his earlier thought—even more—extroverts are indeed scary.
However, one thought bugged him. If they were this lively and always seeking amusement, there was no way they wouldn't be seen near the protagonist, the magnet for trouble. Yet, Hayato couldn't recall them from the manga, even after keenly observing their faces.
However, one thing he noticed was that they were too pretty to be just labeled as background characters. Or maybe, he wondered, is every female in this world attractive?
He wouldn't know the answer to that just yet.
Upon reaching their classroom, they separated to their designated desks. Apparently, during his absence, the teacher had assigned a seating arrangement that would be fixed for the entire year.
How did Hayato know that, you ask? Of course, he got the information from Yuka, who was really excited to tell him. To his surprise, he had been lucky enough to get the seat next to her. Though it was the second seat of the middle row—not exactly the ideal spot to slack off—he didn't mind. Their class had three rows: left, middle, and right, with two desks side by side in each row. Hayato and Yuka's desks were right beside each other.
Hayato approached Yuka with a smile. She was waiting for him, having already been informed the day before, so his presence was no surprise.
"Good morning, Takahashi-san. I feel really lucky to have the desk next to you. I'll be relying on you."
"Me too. Let's get along well."
They exchanged some casual conversation and light jokes, a sign of their growing closeness. Hayato also asked if the teacher had mentioned anything about his absence to the other students, and it turned out they hadn't said a word. That explained why Ami and her friends weren't aware of it.
Class eventually started, and after what felt like an eternity, the lunch break finally arrived. Today, Hayato had a lunch prepared by Rika, which he shared with Yuka.
Yuka was astonished and could hardly believe that Rika had only recently started cooking—she had improved that much in just the past few days.
When Hayato asked Rika how she could improve so quickly, she simply replied, "It's because of my love for you." Hayato, however, mistook it as familial love.
Yuka felt a pang of jealousy when Hayato started bragging about his sister's cooking. According to Yuka, cooking and studying were her only strong points, and she cherished being praised for them—especially by Hayato. Determined to compete, she offered him some of her handmade dishes. As expected, she wasn't disappointed; his reaction was just like the first time he tried her cooking—he didn't hold back on praising her.
After finishing lunch, Hayato excused himself to go to the toilet. However, as soon as he stepped outside the classroom, he ran into Tsukuyo.
"Thank God, I'm really glad to see you back at school, Amane-kun," Tsukuyo said with a sigh of relief. "I asked your class teacher about your absence when I came looking for you a few times but couldn't find you."
"You were looking for me? Did I do something wrong?" he asked, confused. It was true that he was a bit close with Tsukuyo, but they weren't at a level where she would actively seek him out to spend time together.
"I was looking for you because you still haven't given me that treat," Tsukuyo said with a serious expression.
Hayato was taken aback. Amidst everything going on with him, he had actually forgotten about his promise.
"R-Right, I really—"
He stopped mid-sentence when Tsukuyo burst into laughter.
"Sorry, sorry, I was just kidding," Tsukuyo said, wiping away the small drop of tear. "That's not why I was looking for you. I actually have something I want to talk about."
Hayato smiled awkwardly; she had really got him.
As he glanced around, he noticed that all the passersby were now focused on them, with some even stopping to watch. The reason for the attention was obvious: Tsukuyo. Not only is she a beautiful girl, but she is also the current student council president despite being a second-year student, which alone spoke volumes about her capabilities. Her fame in this school is well-deserved, and even many first-year students knew of her.
Now, here is the common questions that everybody would think: What was someone as popular as Tsukuyo doing on the floor of first-year students? Who was this guy she was talking to? What were they discussing? Why was she laughing and looking at him with such favor? And who was he to her?
It would be strange if no one was interested.
Tsukuyo also noticed their surroundings and proposed.
"This doesn't seem like the ideal place to talk. Will you follow me to the student council office? No one's there right now."
'Tanaka-senpai! That last sentence was unnecessary!'
Hayato retorted strongly in his mind after noticing the gasps generated by Tsukuyo's words.
"You go ahead; I'll join you in a few minutes."
Hayato said calmly, gesturing for her to go first. The reason being, He is at his limit, he was holding his pee for a long time, but didn't let his discomfort show in his face.
With their agreement in place, Tsukuyo went ahead. As soon as she turned the corner, Hayato wasted no time and dashed to the toilet as if his life depended on it. Even the observers who wanted to question him about his relationship with the student council president were left stunned.
"Tanaka-senpai, I'm coming in," Hayato announced at the door before stepping inside.
(AN: This could be a foreseen XD.)
"Glad you didn't take long. Come, have a seat," Tsukuyo said after taking a sip of her tea.
Hayato walked over to the sofas in the middle of the room and took the seat opposite her.
"Would you like some tea?" Tsukuyo asked, placing her cup on the table between the two sofas.
"No, I'm good. Anyway, what did you want to talk to me about?" Hayato asked, curiosity clearly visible in his eyes.
Tsukuyo adjusted her already perfect posture. "It's about that video of yours that became quite popular a few days ago."
Hayato was surprised that she brought up the video.
"What about it? I already explained everything to the principal. Is there another problem with it that I'm not aware of?"
Seeing him so tense, Tsukuyo chuckled and waved her hand. "No, no, there's no problem." Then, with a serious expression, she asked, "However, can I ask you the reason behind your actions?"
Hayato knew that Tsukuyo wasn't the type to ask something like this just for entertainment. There had to be a reason behind her question, and her serious expression made it clear she wasn't messing around.
With a sigh, he gave her a brief explanation. He didn't want to go into all the details like he had to with the principal—it was just too exhausting. Besides, she hadn't asked for full details; she only wanted to know the reason.
"I see. Though violence isn't good, it can't be helped if it's to protect someone close to you," Tsukuyo said, nodding in understanding.
"So, is that all you wanted to talk about?"
Hearing his voice, Tsukuyo snapped out of her thoughts. "No, I just asked to confirm something, and now I'm sure that you're the right person for it."
She remained silent for a moment to build Hayato's curiosity, which worked perfectly. Looking him in the eyes with a calm smile, she asked."
"Are you interested in joining the student council?"
"Hah?!"
Hayato was dumbfounded and let out that sound. He was confused about where this was coming from and why she was asking him. Wouldn't the student council's reputation drop if a guy who fights in the street joined them? There were more excellent students she could choose from, and besides, he was just a first-year.
"I can guess what you're thinking, but believe me, it's perfectly fine for you to join the student council. Besides, I have the authority to appoint anyone I see fit."
Tsukuyo calmly explained. Though it wasn't much of an explanation, her calm and confident demeanor convinced him to trust her words.
"Fine, I believe that. However, the student council already has four members, and I don't think I can contribute much to the two remaining positions."
Hayato expressed his concern about not being able to be of much help.
"Don't worry about that. We're already managing fine without filling those two positions; they aren't crucial to us. What I want to propose is a new position for you."
This piqued Hayato's interest, and he leaned in slightly to hear more. Noticing his reaction, Tsukuyo didn't keep him in suspense and revealed with a slight grin.
"I want you to be a disciplinary officer under the student council."
Hayato stood up with a flat expression, his feet leading him toward the door. Without looking back, he raised his hand and said.
"Okay, bye then. I think you've got the wrong guy, Senpai."
Tsukuyo ran after him, grabbing his shirt with both hands. Her eyes were pleading, glittering with tears.
"Wait, at least listen to what I have to say."
However, Hayato didn't budge. Gritting his teeth, he still tried to pull her along with him.
"You clearly asked the wrong guy! I lack discipline myself—how could I set an example for others?!"
"That's why I said listen to me first!" Tsukuyo replied urgently. "You don't have to do what a normal disciplinary officer would do. Our school isn't that strict about appearances, to begin with."
Hayato understood what she meant. He had seen many students, even first-years, wearing accessories, makeup, or hoodies over their uniforms—an example of that is Ami's group.
Hayato stopped struggling and turned to face Tsukuyo. She let go of his shirt, sighing in relief.
"Take your seat again and listen."
she urged after taking her own seat. Once Hayato had settled comfortably, she continued.
"Though I asked you to join as a disciplinary officer, our school doesn't have a disciplinary committee. The principal didn't think it was important and allows students limited freedom with their appearance."
She paused for a moment to catch her breath before continuing.
"Because of that, we have some troublesome clubs, individuals, or groups that we're having trouble dealing with."
"Judging by the fact that you're asking me this after seeing my video, do you want me to knock them out?"
Hayato asked, eyeing her suspiciously. But Tsukuyo quickly shook her hands from side to side, denying his claim.
"No, as I said, violence isn't good, and the teachers won't allow it either. What I want is to leverage the fame you gained from that video. You fought against two college students fiercely in that video, so high school students shouldn't be a problem for you, That's probably what others think. If you join us, we could use your reputation to intimidate those troublemakers and keep them in check. In short, you'll join under the pretext of being a disciplinary officer, but in reality, you'll mostly be here for show or to occasionally visit troublemakers with us."
Hayato was taken aback and impressed by her idea. It was clever and resourceful, showing just why she deserved to be the student council president.
'No, if only that guy wasn't hiding his capabilities, he could easily handle something like this for her.'
Hayato thought, recalling the person he is reluctant to meet, and the reason for his hesitation to join the student council.
Seeing him still hesitant, Tsukuyo tried to convince him further.
"Think about it, Amane-kun. You need to join a club this month anyways and participate in its activities. While our school doesn't have any clubs where you can slack off, if you join the student council as our disciplinary officer, you can relax with minimal work. We have nice sofas and other furniture you can use to just unwind—something you won't find in other clubs."
For someone who had already graduated high school and wanted to avoid the boring lectures and club activities, Tsukuyo's words were like a soothing melody, drawing him in. The idea of slacking off was highly tempting, especially when weighed against avoiding that guy he didn't want to meet. With each passing moment, the allure of relaxing with minimal work grew stronger, and he found himself leaning more towards that option. Thinking of the relaxation ahead, a slight drool began to form at the corner of his mouth, which he quickly wiped away. He then started shaking his head vertically like a broken machine.
"Okay, fine, I'll join. However, you have to keep your word."
Tsukuyo clapped her hands, her smile brightening even more. "That's wonderful!" she exclaimed. She walked over to her desk, retrieved an application form, and handed it to Hayato. "Just sign here," she said.
Hayato glanced over the document, making sure there was nothing out of the ordinary, then signed his name with a swift stroke.
"Alright, come back the day after tomorrow. I'll officially introduce you to the other members. In the meantime, I'll submit your application to the teachers to make everything official."
She paused for a moment, as if something had just occurred to her. "Oh, and one more thing—give me your contact number."
After finishing up, Hayato glanced at the clock and noticed that the end of break time was approaching. He excused himself for the day, ready to head back before the bell rang.
As he walked down the hallway, Hayato paused and glanced back at the student council office door. A thought lingered in his mind as he quietly asked himself, "I'm not going to regret this later, am I?"
