Capítulo 64: Raiding party 8

chapter 64

Reskeme froze, slowly turning he stares into the eyes of the red-faced commander. The commanders' fists clenched and unclenched as he whispers in Kellars ear. Reskeme watched as Kellars face turned to a grin as he waited to listen to the commander. The commanders' voice began to rise as he looked at Kellars face and noticed his words were not having the impact he wanted.

Waving his hand dismissively to the master mage The commander stomped towards Reskeme his face the colour of a week-old tomato. Reskeme laughed feeling a smile rise to his face, The commander shouted," What Are You Smiling About! Reskeme shot to attention his arm braced in front of him saluting, He Replied," nothing sir!" The commander said, "Do you think this is funny?" Reskeme said," no sir, I'm sorry sir."

He wasn't sorry but it couldn't hurt to get back in the commander's favour. His heart beat wildly as the commander channelled his mana, the commander didn't even seem to notice that he was channelling. Reskeme staggered feeling his throat go dry, the man's power felt equal to the master mages, reskeme felt like he was carrying a full travel pack on his shoulders.

The commander stopped his face inches away, Reskeme flinched as spittle hit him in the face but didnt dare move. The commander hissed," If you pull a stunt like that again, I am going to bury you in a litreen to drown in shit." Noticing the massive crowd of soldiers the commanders face immediately changed, THe commander clapped his hands' mere inches from Reskemes face and shouted, "we have another war mage, the enemy is going to get crushed!"

Reskeme couldn't believe to change in temperament, he then noticed nearly the entire army watching them. Maybe the commander had forgiven him? He doubted that, his heart swelled proud as the entire army cheered at the commander's declaration. Maybe someday Reskeme would figure out people? he had thought he was going to be punished.

The commander shouted, "The Darvan Raiders will Tremble in fear at our mages!" Reskeme felt proud as the army cheered, The commander began to leave his bright leather armour creaking as he began to walk away. The commander said," Report to the rear guard, I don't want you causing any more trouble." The commander snapped his fingers as though he had just forgotten he said," This isn't over, if some of my soldiers die because of you there will be hell to pay."

Reskemes shoulders relaxed the weight leaving his shoulders as the man stomped away to do leader things. Three attendants waited for the commander a respectful distance away their faces in various degrees of nervousness.

Reskeme lingered to overhear the reports of the attendants, The first a small man said," Commander our scouts in the neighbouring valley haven't returned, the last report was of them going to investigate traces of a large force passing in a valley next to us.

The commander searched the area glancing frantically for something. His eyes caught on the lingering reskeme. The Commander grinned evilly and said, " new orders, take your squad and see what all the fuss is about, the army is advancing, we can't let the retreating enemy escape." Reskeme said," my two squadmates were injured in the recent battle." Scoffing the commander said," that was a skirmish, and we have a mage healer, hurry go fetch them, if there is a flanking force I want to know as soon as possible."

Reskeme saluted and walked past the commander towards the water fall, The last of the army last of the army pushed wagons up the hill. He waited nervous as the wagons creaked and groaned slowly pulled and pushed up the hill. descending the hill Reskeme followed down the trail looking for the healer, Carley and Dusty walked out of the trees no longer limping or holding their sides.

The third a Man in a brown robe walked besides them his smile bright and unconcerned. Reskeme felt his shoulders Relax at the site of his squad, of course, they were fine, he didn't even know why he had been concerned. He said," we need to go, the commander gave us orders to go scout the valley next to us immediately."

Carley's brows drooped and her lips turned down, She shouted," didn't Rogers squad go scouting down that valley?" Dustys mouth moved voice was drowned out the distance too far away. Reskeme said," The scouts didn't return, it is our job to go find out what happened to them, the commander is worried the enemy might be trying to flank us." Carley said," I'm sure they are just running late, but lets go check anyways, if we rush we can be back before the army attacks the enemy encampment.

Reskeme climbed up the steep bank following after Carley, he grasped onto trees for support and used them to pull himself up the steep mountain. He felt his javelins and naginata clanking around hitting together as he moved up the mountain. His frustration was mounting no matter how much he tied them down they would start rattling in only moments on this rough terrain.

His legs burned and he felt hot the afternoon sun making him feel like he was in a blacksmiths forge. gasping for breath He clambered up one more rise, sighing with relief he collapsed to a fallen log taking deep breaths. Reskeme took a long drink of water panting besides an exhausted Carley, She to sat on the log next to him her cloths drenched in sweat and her face sunburned.

She said," What a pain, I feel out of shape, that was way harder than it should have been. This little hill should be nothing for me to hike." Reskeme said," what do you mean? I don't think I can handle any more hiking for now." Carley said," that is because you haven't been doing this for years, the only reason I'm exhausted is that mage healed me."

the scrape of feet and clatter of feet on rocks came from behind him, Dusty collapsed next to him gasping as well. Dusty said," That is horrible, I didn't believe that mage when he said i would be tired for the next couple of days." Carley sighed, she said," I don't mind to much, I much rather being healed with no energy than being injured." Reskeme said," haven't you been healed by a mage before?" Dusty said," we don't always have a healer, they are rare soo we were lucky."

Reskeme rose to his feet the mountains in front of him formed the shape of a V that cut between two mountains. His breath came evenly as they walked through the forest. He glanced up the mountain doubting he could make it up to the top, at least they could take the pass. Reskeme waited until they entered the pass before he stopped the squad. Channeling his mana Reskeme created a 3 layers of mana, each of his squad blending with the surroundings much better.

He channeled Mana creating Carley 2 layers of mana, a dark green layer and black green, Channeling his mana he created three layers for dusty, creating a mesh of Green black and brown leaving holes in his layer of mana to make dusty blend into the bushes and trees. If he was close he could easily spot them but as they walked further it became harder and harder to notice them.

He followed Carley the setting sun against his back, stopping at the end of the valley Reskeme followed the cliff keeping an eye on the valley below looking for movement. The small bowl-shaped valley had a lake on the far side and other than a bird he couldn't see any movement. He knew that anything could be waiting below, and soo he focused hard not willing to look away. Soon the sun set and the light began to fade, He began to relax the tension leaving his shoulders as he began to get bored of watching the forest below.

Dusty and carley used their spotting glasses but they too didnt report anything, The moon began to rise and soon the stars appeared covering the night sky in a blanket of shimmering lights. Each of the stars sparkled and glittered, Reskeme wonder at the stars, what were they, he didn't believe they were like the sun, wouldn't they be brighter?

Carley said," lets go back, there is clearly nothing here," Reskeme watched the forest below his eyes piercing the darkness below and catching sight of movement towards the far end of the valley. He said," i see something moving, There is something in the trees moving." Carley pulled up her spotting glass and looked through it, she scanned back and forth in the dim moonlight but scoffed.

She said," i cant see a thing, maybe your just seeing things, its too dark to see anything right now." Reskeme said," i can still see them, they are leaving the valley back towards the fortress or to get around us." Carley said," lets go check it out" Reskeme groaned, She said" let's go get of your butt, i dont care if you are still exhausted." creeping along the edge of the valley he overlooked the ravine looking for movent in the low moonlight. It took them time to reach the end of the valley and Reskeme was beginning to have his doubts, he couldn't see movement anymore, maybe it was just a trick of the light.

Stopping at the mouth of the valley he waited and watched, the wind whipped around and the pitch black of night settled in. Carley said," the darva must not be here, if they were going to attack out flank they would take the pass we took, It makes no sense for them to leave through the mouth of the valley, Unless they are going to attack the fortresses."

Reskeme said," I doubt they would, we are attacking one of their fortresses no way they would abandon a fortress to us." Dusty said," he is right, they don't like losing land to us, i think Reskeme was just seeing things." Carley sighed, she said," Lets go, Her voice cut off as a long howl in the distance drifted down the valley. Reskeme said," maybe it was the wind?" He pointed towards the tree line, A second howl high pitched and faint followed the first. Carley ordered, "We need to hurry back, the commander needs to know about this."
