Capítulo 56: Northern fortress 2

Chapter 54

Reskeme found himself without much to do, the soldiers didn't want him clogging up the wall. Sure he was purposefully avoiding the groups of soldiers who were collecting rubble from the attack but who could blame him. Reskeme lay underneath a window eve and couldn't help but feel bad for the group of sweating soldiers hauling rocks and dirt to patch the holes in the wall.

Reskeme didn't know much about building a wall but pilling dirt and loose stones in the hole didn't seem like the way to fix it. He didn't have any better ideas however and so sitting in the shade was the most he was going to do for now.

His familiar agrees with his assessment by sending him an image of a relaxing nap. Reskeme liked that idea, he was beginning to like his familiar, the thing hadn't threatened him all day. That could only mean it was starting to like him which was a good start.

If reskeme was going to be stuck with the stubborn demon he should make an effort to get along with it.

Reskeme pulled out a throwing knife, he decided putting runes on each of his knives for later could help him survive. He examined the steel throwing knife, the weapon had been completely useless so far and he wanted to change that. Having another throwing weapon would be nice. With his illusion, amulet reskeme now was free from needing to hide.

Reskeme channelled his mana, creating runes and powering them on each of his throwing knives, now he would be able to power them whenever he needed to throw a burning knife at an enemy.

He would be safe, Well at least until his horns started growing, his hand darted to his head feeling for the bumps. Was it just his imagination or had his horns grown? He shook his head, he must just be imagining things.

Now that he thought about it his familiar also had grown, not much but the familiar did look a little bit taller.

His familiar must have sensed his distress because it hissed at him and scurried away laughing its hissing laugh. Kellar came around the corner shortly after, the mage was reading a pile of documents in his hands and doing his best not to stumble. catching sight of reskeme smirking at the back of his retreating familiar Kellar coughed.

Kellar addressed reskeme he said," there you are I have been looking everywhere for you, go set up my tent it's packed on my horse I don't have time to do it myself." Before reskeme could retort with a snide response Kellar left walking somewhere in a hurry.

Climbing to his feet He strolled towards the stables to retrieve the tent, he figured with nothing better to do he mise well get some practice. The master mage had after all given him a handy amulet that disguised reskeme from prying eyes.

He packed all of the equipment from the shed to a clear spot and looked over the random objects, wondering what these metal spikes were for? probably just for hanging a clothesline he thought. Reskeme put the useless metal spikes back in the shed and started his tent setting process.

First, he needed to lay out the tent fabric and make sure it was facing the proper direction, next use the poles to prop up the tent, where had he put those rocks? If he put them at the base of the poles he would get proper support so they wouldn't fall. Backing carefully from the second pole he did his best not to touch the fabric as last time the big tent had fallen over.

He wrapped the tent strings around loose hanging rocks to keep the strings from blowing weirdly in the wind, after all he couldn't have his masterpiece looking bad. Now finished he whistled a happy tune, the tent had stayed up surprisingly, His best work so far. Reskeme smiled at Kellar who was walking to his tent in the evening light The man looked exhausted.

Speeding up his stride reskeme skurried around a corner and watched waiting to see what happened, Kellar leaned pulled open the tent flap, whew he thought the tent didn't fall, crouching the master mage entered the tent but bumped one of the tent poles.

Reskemes sauntered away from the loud yelling behind him doing his best to look innocent, If anyone had seen his shit eating grin they might have asked why he was so cheerful. Reskemes bedroll was in an inconspicuous corner away from the attention and prying eyes of the rest of the fort. Best of all he didn't need to set up a tent because the overhang that held the hay for horses was perfect and a soft spot to sleep.

The next morning a very grumpy Kellar found him in the practice yard, He said," I have already made arrangements with the commander, the damned fool will only give us 30 bowmen and 30-foot soldiers I tried to convince him that we needed more but the man wouldn't be convinced. Reskeme said," did we get any mages?" Kellar spat to the side, he said," all of the mages were too mana drained to fight they need rest, in other words, no.

Kellar said, "They are desperately needed here, we must just take the soldiers and go before we get bogged down by more politics." Reskeme thought leaving this morning meant leaving in maybe an hour, but it was late into the afternoon before His squad and the soldiers were ready to leave. Reskeme, Dusty and Kellar were leading a group of 60 soldiers and 3 wagons to their staging area for the assault on the Darvan camp.

Reskeme glanced over the assortment of men and women all dressed in leather armour, half had bows and the other half were equipped with a sword and a spear. Reskeme didn't realize how loud a group of 60 soldiers marching could be, there was also no hiding the dust they kicked up.

With the force of soldiers leaving the fortress reskeme could hear the long drawn out howls of the enemy pursuing them, Kellar had guessed they would so leading the men from the fort wasn't a disaster. The enemy correctly assumed they were going to invade and were waiting for the humans to enter their territory the trees.

Clear open ground favoured the humans with their superior range while the Darva warriors were the better at fighting close quarters. With little trouble, the large group marched with breaks for food and water but the pursuers were occasionally spotted keeping the whole group on high alert. Reskemes nerves were on edge the damned Darva was howling every step of the way the damned things wouldn't shut up.

Reskeme finally arrived at the eagles' fortress, upon entering the gates he was shocked at how many soldiers were running around. He thought they had been invaded, Kellar said," it looks like the other garrison troops beat us here." Reskeme smiled, He said," how many soldiers do we have to attack with?" Kellar chewed on his lip, he said," with our defending forces and travelling light for 4 to 5 days we will be able to field 250 soldiers in the field.

Reskeme was ordered by Kellar to get to work, and so he delivered letters around the fort taking letters from the commander to different groups preparing the ranks and marching order of each individual group. without the faintest idea reskeme was involved in one of the most important parts of an army preparation.

He was getting exhausted delivering missives to the healers then the food quartermaster only for each one to send him back to the commander was tiring. Reskeme was further hindered when the commander read the missives and sent him back to each of the groups with a new letter. He was shocked how much went on to prepare even a small army of 250 to march to battle.

Reskeme learned a few things along the way, for one horse needed feed for the trip, soldiers needed food and the food had to be carried by wagons which needed to be pulled by oxen. He was baffled at the preparations involved, armour needed repairing and arrows needed to be fletched. More bows needed to be acquired also. Unable to keep up with the list Reskeme ran from task to task working with two other messengers to deliver the messages all across the fortress.

Stumbling to his Tent Reskeme lay down on the fabric and pulled his blanket over him, his leather armour was soaked with sweat and felt sticky but he was too tired to care. Removing his weapon, he really didn't want to lose a limb in the night if he flailed around before Shutting his eyes and taking a deep sigh he fell asleep.

Reskeme awoke to a clear sky the sun was rising in the east, glancing around he realized the entire camp was already awake and almost ready. Clambering to his feet he rose before pulling the leather strap of his naginata and javelins over his leather armour-clad shoulder. Reskeme rolled up his tent and retrieved his horse, Looking around he spotted his two guards with a group of 8 others.

Carley noticed his scrutiny and waved him over she said, "You are joining us, we are the escorts of the mages." Reskeme nodded, he couldn't complain, if he was going into a battle he was not complaining with having body guards. Kellar rode up shortly after and the group stood in the middle of the marching formation as the commander of the army, and the leader of the fortress rode from the stable clad in armour and prepared for battle.

The commanders armour shone in the light glimmering, Reskeme thought shining metal was silly, he would just be a target on the battlefield. The commander drew his sword and shouted "now we march to get revenge, to finally take the fight to the enemy and to finally get revenge for all those lost over the years!" Cheering boisterously the soldiers followed the leader of the fortress towards the mountains and to take the fight to the enemy.
