NADINE PUSHED AGAINST THE ground, gently rocking the chair using her toes. She tugged the fuzzy blanket up just under her chin and stared out at Culver Lake. These planned respites were important if she wanted to keep her strength up. One of the things she'd learned about early in her career was the need to pace herself. She didn't have the brute strength of her colleges. She had to play the game smarter.

That was why always having a plan was important. Without it she'd have been caught days after her initial escape. The fact that she hadn't was all due to her plan. Of course, it was ultimately a matter of when someone would catch up to her. With any luck, by then she'd be so imbedded within Metis that she couldn't be touched.

She closed her eyes, unable to hold back the weariness any longer.

All the traveling was taking its toll on her, but she'd hit every aspect of her plan up until now. She just had to stay on track.
