His friend was not trying to be mean. She was only telling a story as it was. But it did not mean he liked it, especially when the topic was all about him.

"And that was not how it happened." He interrupted them, frustrated that his friend was painting him in a different light, at least not in a narrative he would like.

It was embarrassing as far as he was concerned. But who had no skeletons in their past? Sadly, his life story had become the subject of their entertainment.

"That is, more or less, what you did." Jessica insisted as she continued telling the story according to what she remembered. "Don't you dare try to change it so you can be the hero?"

In truth, his friend might be right about that. He thought he had saved the day, but in the end, they all realized someone else beat him to it.
