Hey True Believers, it’s the end of May 2020 when I’m working on this surprisingly lighthearted chapter. As of now, protests and riots — spurred by a series of maltreatment toward people just because of their skin color — are flaring. They can be terrifying to those who are staying in the proximity of these riots, but remember, no one working for better changes wanted to jump into riots straight away. Riots can be de-escalated, protests can be peaceful, and finally, if the system is right, there wouldn’t be a need for protests just to have voices heard. So here’s what we can all do as international citizens and fellow human beings: lend your voice to the cause and support it to the best of your ability. Educate those who have yet understood the magnitude of discrimination. Speak for those who can’t or aren’t there to defend themselves. Stifle the spread of lies and narratives aim to muddy the water and mislead. Listen to their perspectives and cries, especially when their life experience differs starkly from our own. Keep the momentum going until significant changes happen — then keep watching it so that it doesn’t stop or backslide. Never cease the call for justice, even when the flames have simmered and it’s no longer trending on social media. Lead by example and strive to treat everyone as human no different from yourself, because racism isn’t an exclusively American malady. As for Americans reading this? Do your best for the right cause. We’re behind ya.
