This chapter is here to give you some context about this fanfic and Lara's development.
First, Lara's home universe is a blend of Marvel Comics, the MCU, and a touch of Tomb Raider lore woven in. I've done my best to interconnect these elements in a way that feels natural and engaging.
Since the comic book timeline is notoriously chaotic and has been rebooted countless times, I'm primarily using the MCU's timeline to establish the dates for major events and character birth years. However, I'll occasionally draw on comic-based details when it fits better—like Natasha Romanoff's comic origin, which places her birth in the 1920s. Keep in mind that not everything will align perfectly because the Marvel multiverse is incredibly complex, with timelines varying widely between editions.
For this fanfic, I'll be picking and choosing the settings I like best. For example, let's talk about the Celestials. My fanfic will use their comic version: technorganic, fallen-angel-turned-space-scientist beings obsessed with pushing the boundaries of biodiversity and unlocking the extreme potential of species through rapid evolution. Their successes are godlike beings called Eternals (who are organic in the comics), while their failures are the Deviants. Test subjects who seem unaffected by their experiments are reintegrated into the species' general population, giving rise to mutants and mutates.
In the comics, the Celestials champion diversity. Traits that might seem like "defects" or "disabilities" are considered successes, as the Celestials view perfection as adaptability and biodiversity. The Celestials themselves are malformed Aspirants who rebelled against their creator, choosing variety over uniformity. Unlike the biblical War in Heaven, these fallen rebels succeeded, driving their creator away by leveraging a vast array of tactics that made up for their smaller numbers. For them, variety is the ultimate strength.
By contrast, the MCU portrays the Celestials as life-force-consuming parasites. They seed planets with their essence, and once enough highly evolved beings inhabit the planet to serve as nourishment, they emerge—destroying the planet in the process. In this version, the Eternals are synthetic beings created to protect the dominant species long enough for it to multiply and evolve sufficiently. The Deviants, also synthetic, were initially designed to control predator populations but went rogue, becoming predators themselves.
This mix of interpretations helps shape the universe of this fanfic, and I hope you enjoy how these ideas come together.
Also, just so you know, I don't have a PhD in Marvel comic lore! As I write this fanfic, I'm researching online about both the comics and the MCU, learning along the way alongside you.
About Lara's Development
Lara won't suddenly become overpowered. She'll have to work hard to earn her place in the Marvel cosmic hierarchy. Most characters in this fanfic operate on a comic-scale level. Take Hulk, for example: he won't be the relatively weaker version seen in the MCU. If he gets angry enough, he can become Worldbreaker Hulk, capable of destroying a planet with a single punch, just like in the comics.
The story will also include major events, such as the one involving Molecule Man, who was planted by the Beyonders in every universe to destroy all life in the multiverse. If Lara doesn't want to leave her fate entirely in the hands of Doctor Doom or Reed Richards, she'll need to become powerful enough to survive, contribute to stopping it, or escape to another universe—such as DC.
That said, this won't happen until much later in the story, near the fanfic's end. I promise that Lara's power won't come from nowhere; there will be no "asspulls." She'll have to endure countless challenges and work tirelessly to reach that level. It's going to take a long time for her to get there.
