The moment Tsukino's words faded, one of the students fell to the ground, decapitated by a wind jaguar in a flash.
The young girl felt like her heart had been ripped out. 'No! No! If I can't even save these people, how can I possibly face my brother?'
Before she could gather her thoughts, another teammate fell to the ground, and his blood streamed towards her feet.
In the next second, her eyes widened in horror as another teammate fell, and she stumbled backward, her eyes fixed on his lifeless body that fell onto her chest, leaving a trail of blood.
'I'm going to be next!'
A scream built up inside her, but it was trapped as another teammate fell, and fear became the only thing in her mind.
Tears streamed down her cheeks, and although Shinji disliked her, he grabbed her hand and pulled her to the ground.
"Everyone, get down now! We'll crawl away from here and regroup!"
At Shinji's words, everyone dropped to the ground, trying to avoid the jaguars' attacks, leaving only Lucy and Sora standing.
When the next jaguar launched a swift attack, Lucy violently swung his otsuchi, blasting it to flesh and blood. However, the boy being attacked by the jaguar died in the process.
Lucy's amber eyes coldly surveyed the group lying on the ground, "Unlike the normal stage 1 jaguars we're used to, which usually move alone, the stage 2 wind jaguars move in packs and have super speed. The only way to kill them is when they're attacking, but you might end up killing your teammates."
Tsukino wiped away her tears, her eyes were filled with disgust as she looked at Lucy.
"That's completely immoral and diabolic of you. You'll die horribly for doing something like that!"
The one to reply was Sora, who throw a dagger to kill the jaguar about to attack Tsukino.
"You're right. Who expects to die nicely in a place like this?"
Lucy looked at Sora and commented, "That was stupid."
Sora smirked, "I have another dagger. Those beasts are the ones who need to be afraid of me."
"You're right. " Lucy said as he removed her gaze from her.
On the other side, Tsukino remained indifferent to the loud noises Sora was making, and gazed at the black dagger lodged in the yellow and black spotted jaguar.
She bit her lower lip in frustration, thinking to herself, 'Sora has been following Lucy around, mimicking his training methods despite the two of them using different weapons. Yet, she was able to kill a stage 2 jaguar that uses Rei to hasten its movements with ease, like it was just a neighborhood cat.'
Tsukino vividly recalled Sora being in the same team as her when they first met; Sora couldn't even hold a dagger properly and seemed like a timid boy (no one knew she was a girl then). However, after attempting to emulate Lucy, Sora underwent a drastic transformation.
Tsukino's gaze shifted to Shinji, and she couldn't help but feel envious. He was a prodigy with a bow, never missing his target since the day he killed the muscle puma.
'What about me, though?'
Tsukino felt helpless, she knew the other girls called her a genius with twin swords, but her talent paled in comparison to Shinji's. Catching up to him seemed impossible, which is why she always felt enraged whenever he tries to make her appear as his rival.
'His words alone can inspire people, yet they only follow me because I'm the only girl, since Sora is always with that diabolical Lucy. I want people to follow me because of my own skill and strength! I want people to view me as a hero one day!'
Tsukino grasped her twin katanas firmly and released an ear-piercing scream as she charged towards the jaguar about to attack one of her teammates.
With a swift strike, she sliced the jaguar into three equal parts.
Her resolute eyes locked onto Lucy and Sora as she declared, "Unlike you two, I'll try to save everyone, even if it costs me my life!"
Lucy and Sora gazed back at her with emotionless eyes, replying in unison, "You're right."
Tsukino felt relieved that Lucy and Sora didn't try to convince her, and she turned to rally the group, but Shinji beat her to it, as he recited a poem:
"Kurenai, my village of gold,
Don't let my heart grow cold.
Seems of splendor, but struggle's might,
Lurks in every door, day and night.
A young man's tale, a story true,
A beggar once, now saving a few.
In war's harsh crucible, he found his test,
And rose up, a hero, to do his best!"
The group felt motivated by Shinji's poem and stood up, letting out a loud war cry that made Shinji chuckle with delight. As he walked away from the, he thought to him;
'Only morons think about being heroes at a time like this! I need to stay in the shadows, and attack from time to time to show them my presence.'
Unaware of Shinji's thoughts, Tsukino gritted her teeth in frustration as he stole the spotlight once again. However, she could only focus on staying alert and battled the wind jaguars sneaking up on the group.
As the battle prolonged, she grew increasingly frustrated with Shinji for covering her blind spots and killing the jaguars targeting her. Little did she know, Shinji was actually trying to kill her, not save her.
On the sidelines, Sora watched Tsukino with sparkling eyes. "She's so talented! Just like Tomoe Gozen herself! With a single move from her swords, the jaguars die instantly!"
Lucy nodded in agreement, crossing his arms beside her. Anyone would agree that Tsukino was the MVP of the fight.
Her movements were splendid, motivating the others to keep fighting despite their exhaustion.
However, instead of being motivated, Lucy felt suspicions as he examined the surroundings, his eyes narrowing as he gazed at the nearby trees.
"Sora, throw your dagger at the tallest middle branches of the tallest sugi tree."
Without hesitation, Sora swiftly threw her remaining dagger at the tallest sugi tree, nearly thirty meters high. The dagger vanished into the leaves, and before Sora could ask about the purpose of her attack, a body dressed in a blue kamino came crashing down, splattering like a watermelon and making a loud sound that scared the jaguars away.

(1) Tomoe Guzen - according to Wikipedia - she was an onna-musha, a female samurai, mentioned in The Tale of the Heike. There is doubt as to whether she existed as she doesn't appear in any primary accounts of the Genpei war. She only appears in the epic "The tale of the Heike". She served under samurai lord Minamoto no Yoshinaka during the Battle of Awazu, part of the Genpei War in the late Heian period, which led to the establishment of the Kamakura shogunate.
(2) sugi tree - this are the tallest trees in Japanese. The oldest among them is nearly 3000 years old, and the tallest is 70 meters.
