"Alright, let's take a break here and have some lunch," Tyson said, stretching lazily as he found an open clearing.
Hearing this, Eevee leapt off Tyson's shoulder and mimicked his stretch, its tiny paws reaching forward. The Charmeleon, ever watchful, scanned the surroundings for danger before settling down near Tyson, keeping an alert but relaxed posture.
Every time Tyson saw this side of Charmeleon, he felt immensely grateful. Not only did it lack the fiery temper many Fire-type Pokémon were known for, but it retained their boundless determination to fight and grow stronger. Beyond that, it had a nurturing, almost brotherly attitude, often looking out for Eevee and Abra like a protective sibling.
While Eevee nestled into Tyson's arms during their journey, Charmeleon took on the role of protector, ensuring everyone's safety. Even during rest periods, it often insisted on taking the first watch, especially during the night.
"You've done enough for now, buddy. Take a proper rest—leave this to me," Tyson said, patting Charmeleon on the shoulder and massaging its taut muscles to help it relax. Slowly, Charmeleon allowed itself to unwind, eventually sprawling on the grass with a contented sigh.
Satisfied, Tyson began preparing lunch. Instead of his usual stew, he pulled out some pre-packaged meals designed for trainers on the go. These semi-cooked meals could be heated quickly, ensuring variety in his meals while traveling.
The aroma soon wafted through the air, stirring Abra from its nap. Its sleepy expression gave way to curiosity as it floated closer, drawn by the enticing smell.
"Did you have a good nap?" Tyson chuckled, patting Abra on the head. Abra nodded, its dreamy eyes fixed on the simmering meal, almost asking when it would be ready.
"Alright, alright, you can eat now. Sit down and behave," Tyson said with a grin, gently setting Abra near the fire. Abra's psychic abilities had improved significantly, and Tyson suspected it was close to evolving. However, he chose to wait a little longer, cautious of its prior overexertion when it first gained substantial power. He didn't want to risk anything that might hinder its future development.
Curious about how Abra's lazy demeanor might play into its evolution, Tyson mused silently while serving up food. Despite its small size, Abra's appetite was impressive—it devoured two large bowls effortlessly before curling up again like a contented little Snorlax.
After the meal, the group rested briefly, with Tyson keeping watch while the others recuperated. An hour later, he gently woke Charmeleon, the team's natural vanguard. Abra returned to its Poké Ball, while Eevee snuggled back into Tyson's arms as they prepared to move forward.
Charmeleon's fiery spirit reignited instantly, ready for the challenges ahead. As they ventured deeper into the forest, the wild Pokémon grew stronger, a sign they were approaching the more dangerous areas leading to Pewter City and Tyson's first Gym battle.
Suddenly, a Raticate darted into view.
"Charmeleon, use Ember!" Tyson commanded without hesitation.
Flames erupted from Charmeleon's mouth, surging forward like a fiery lance. With its advanced mastery of Ember, Charmeleon had elevated the move to an impressive level, making it a reliable and powerful attack. Despite this, reaching the pinnacle of mastery remained a challenging task.
Raticate, sensing the heat of the flames, reacted quickly. Unable to counter from a distance, it charged forward with Quick Attack, managing to disrupt the flames briefly. However, this proved to be a grave mistake.
"Charmeleon, follow up with Flamethrower!" Tyson ordered.
A roaring pillar of fire engulfed Raticate, scorching its fur black. The pain drove the wild Pokémon into retreat, but it couldn't escape Charmeleon's relentless pursuit.
Intercepting Raticate's path, Charmeleon launched a Dragon Breath attack, striking it square in the abdomen and knocking it off balance. Before Raticate could recover, another Flamethrower sealed its defeat.
The victorious Charmeleon roared triumphantly as Tyson opened his Pokédex to update its stats. With a satisfied grin, Tyson added points to Charmeleon's abilities, elevating its strength to an Advanced level.
"Roar!" Charmeleon bellowed, feeling the surge of power course through its body. Though it would take time to fully control this newfound strength, its fighting spirit burned brighter than ever.
"Good job, Charmeleon. Let's find another opponent to help you master this power," Tyson said, offering an energy cube as a reward. As they moved deeper into the forest, Tyson made a mental note to adjust his training style.
Instead of issuing commands for every battle, he decided to let Charmeleon fight independently. This would not only improve its situational awareness but also foster the ability to think critically during battles.
Tyson had learned from observing others that Pokémon overly reliant on their trainers struggled to reach their full potential. He resolved to ensure his team could handle challenges on their own, and this was the perfect opportunity to begin that training.
For Charmeleon, this new level of autonomy seemed like an exciting challenge, one it eagerly embraced.
