THE ALARM went off rather loud the following morning.
The piercing sound of it made Susanna jump up from the world of sleep.
Exasperated, she wriggled on her bed and fluttered her sleepy eyes open.
She forced them to look at the alarm clock.7:00 am.
Slowly, the revelation of what the day entailed for her began to promulgate itself in her mind and she abruptly sprang up from the warm haven realising that she was expected to report to one of the best schools in the whole of Washington.
She rushed to the bathroom, freaking out at the thought of being late on her first day.
Well, normally she never bothered of making first impressions. At one time she arrived at her new school in Texas at midday. But this was different.
This wasn't Coltman senior school...this was Cedar Hurst, totally different from the rest.
She took the quickest shower she'd taken in her life and jumped in her new uniform.
Hastily, she walked over to her full length mirror and tied her hair to a ponytail. If asked, she loved french plaits more than ponytails. But time was the limiting factor here.
She heard a knock on her door.
"Who is it?" She asked, quietly praying that it wasn't her father.
" Hurry up!" Came the annoyed voice of Adrian.
" Just a sec," she replied with relief.
" Tell that to dad," she heard his fading voice.
"Jerk,"she muttered under her breath as she looked around at anything she might have forgotten.
Nothing.
She quickly picked up her bag and left the room.
She found Georgina and her dad already at the dining table, eating.
Without a word, she took a seat and focused on her own breakfast:soymilk and eggs coupled with whole grain bread.
Who the hell would eat that?
" You'll eager to join school, huh?" Her dad broke the looming silence.
" Of course,"Georgina said," Very eager."
He turned to Susanna,"What about you?"
"Same damn thing."
He sighed, knowing pretty well that he couldn't do anything concerning her attitude.
Georgina snickered from her own end of the table.
Susanna glared at her. She badly wished for a chance to hit her, or for words to curse her with. She couldn't find either.
In response, she gave a reprimand, " What's your problem, lady?"
Georgina lifted her head and a huge smirk appeared on her face.
"You see, very soon you won't be so eager."
She said this slowly, as if she was trying to scare her with a horror movie stance .
Susanna didn't bulge. A smirk appeared on her face too "We'll see about that, George!"
Susanna knew every bit on how to Annoy her. Calling her George was one of them.
It always made her have the look Trump would get after losing Republican presidential nominations seat.
Today, it was no different. She stood up from her seat, her breath spewing with rage.
"How dare you!" She scowled between gritted teeth.
A hand stopped her from galumphing towards her.
"Calm down, girls. You'll kick each other's butts later but now... We need to get going."
Georgina's scowl reduced to a deadly glare as she picked up her bag.
Her dad picked up some keys on the table and headed for the door. The two girls followed, a good distance away from each other.
Outside, they were met by the shock of their lives.
A brand new Honda civic, shiny blue stood proudly inside their previously empty garage.
As if to relinquish their doubts, he allowed the car keys to dangle between his fingers .
"A gift from the company," He said as he pressed a button and two beeping sounds confirmed the opening of the doors.
"Wow, dad!" Georgina screamed in ecstacy as she rushed over to the open vehicle with an exaggerated glimmer of interest. She opened the rear right door and immersed herself in.
"I love you, dad!" She blew him a kiss as she locked the door.
He turned to Susanna with a smile, "Well, why don't you roll in?"
Susanna scoffed as she walked over to the car, "I didn't need to be told."
He sighed softly and went to take the driver's seat quietly and started the car.
"Too bad there's no driveway," He muttered with a chuckle as he drove it through the small wooden white gate.
"Who cares," Georgina squeaked as she quickly turned her attention back to her phone to reply to the numerous texts coming in . Yeah, actually, who cared about a driveway?
Susanna assumed the texts were from her friends back in Baltimore.
She didn't mind her,nor envied her. She was after all, entirely different from her
While Georgina was quick to make friends in any place they moved to, Susanna didn't bother at all to have friends in her life.
Ever since their father had divorced their mom, Susanna and Adrian had become completely withdrawn from the society. Their attitude towards their father had changed that stormy evening when Susanna was 8 and Adrian 7, their father brought home a short and mean looking plump woman for a step mom and a sassy rude girl for a step sister.
Detestation and hatred set in immediately the two set foot inside the two roomed apartment back in Smallville. It had been hell of a nightmare for Susanna and Adrian. And since then, it had always been.
The step mom and daughter immediately seized authority in the house. Had it not been for Susanna's strong for headedness, her case would have turned out to be an exact replica of Cinderella, or maybe Snow White.
The events in her family had made her grow up rather antisocial and an uncompromising introvert. She needed no friends in her life at all and she was even glad when they avoided her.
"I'll need you two to behave, okay?" Their father suddenly said in the middle of the ride. His voice had that 'i think you're up to something' sort of tone. And it annoyed Susanna .
She didn't respond, neither did Georgina.
"Hey, you hear me?" He said again much louder.
"Uh huh," Georgina mumbled, her eyes still glued to her phone.
"And you Susan?" Came the probing voice.
Susanna's eyes remained directed to the streets outside barely sparing him a glance.
"Same damn thing," She finally said.
"Don't worry, dad," Georgina said, "I'll make sure she doesn't spoil the Dewell name."
Susanna suddenly glared at her with disgust in her eyes. She was met by a fresh smirk which spelt pure evil. She quickly looked away with a huff. As much as she hated to admit it, she feared that look , especially from Georgina. It always meant that there was something evil up her sleeves, something that as long as it remained unknown, scared her to the core.
"We're here, ladies," Their father suddenly announced after minutes of silent driving.
"Wow," Susanna mouthed slowly as the huge brick walls and a magnificent and quixotic glass gate came into sight.
"Oh my gosh!" Georgina squealed loudly as the glass gate opened automatically to reveal a long and smooth driveway decorated with exotic flowers on either sides.
"Isn't it beautiful?" Their father asked.
"It's amazing!" Georgina replied as she stared in amazement at the beauty of the school.
The long driveway slowly led into a humongous parking lot where a lot of flashy cars they had never seen in their entire lives stood proudly.
"Shit," Said Georgina, "Is this for real ? "
" It's real, dear, "He said as he parked the vehicle .
" Welcome to Cedarhurst academy, "He said as they all alighted from the car with evident enthusiasm. His tone made him seem as though he'd been in the school since its establishment and knew every corner of the school.
" Can I help you? "A feminine voice said behind them , breaking his little moment of glory.
They all turned to see a young woman, probably in her late twenties, dressed decently in a brown skirt suit staring at them. Her luscious black hair amazed Susanna. It was well kept and smelt money, even from the distance between them.
She drew closer.
" Oh, hello, "Said their father as he offered a handshake," We'd like to know the way to the Principal. "
She smiled, receiving the huge hand that came her way," New? "
" Yeah... Yeah... Newbies, " He replied rather awkwardly.
She smiled wider," Follow me, please. "
She led them out of the parking lot and into a narrow sidewalk which led them into a couple of buildings, all made of glass.
She then aimed for the building in the middle which was quite different from the rest. On top of it stood the bold inscription, "ADMINISTRATION BLOCK."
Below this was the name of the school written in slate pink.
Inside the building, the woman led them through five flights of stairs which she seemed to be thoroughly apologetic about.
"The elevator is under renovation," She said, "Otherwise you wouldn't be using this tiresome stairs.
" No, it's okay, "Their father said with a coughy laugh .
She smiled in return.
After the stairs, they were led into a wide hallway with a series of offices.
At the end stood an office with the inscription, "Principal Sternwood."
They walked into the office and met a woman who Susanna assumed was the secretary. She was in her late fifties and they met her glued to her computer. She didn't notice their presence .
"Sup , Lydia," The woman that had led them said to her.
She lifted her head towards them.
"Hey, Enid," She replied ,her eyes traveling to the three"New?"
"Yeah," Enid replied.
The secretary turned her attention back to the computer and punched a few buttons before she finally lifted her head again.
"Spencer Dewell?" She asked, her s-shaped brows raised up.
He nodded, "Yes."
"Walk right in, the principal's expecting you."
"Oh," He said, "Thanks."
The three then turned to a huge mahogany teakwood door before them and knocked slightly. "Get in," A deep voice said from inside.
The three of them walked in the spacious office. Behind the huge mahogany desk dirtified with three computers and numerous papers sat an old man glancing at them sternly through those peculiar round glasses. He was old, probably around late or early seventies . He seemed to have served in the office for quite sometime.
He suddenly smiled, "Spencer Dewell, welcome."
"Thank you, sir," Their father replied.
"Have a seat," He was told.
The three of them took their seats on comfy leather chairs.
"So, Mr Spencer," The principal said as soon as they had settled, "Are your daughters ready for this magnificent school?"
"Certainly," He said, "They're readier than they have never been."
"Oh, That is good," The principal said and turned his attention to Georgina, "What's your name, dear?"
"Georgina, sir."
"How eager are you to start classes?"
"Very eager, Sir," She replied smiling broadly.
The principal then turned his attention to Susanna, "And you are who, beauty?"
"Susanna Dewell, Sir."
"Nice name for a beautiful girl, huh..."
Susanna smiled,"Thank you, Sir."
" Good, now to start with you, "He pointed at Georgina," Grade 12b, that's your class. Nice class indeed. Important landmarks we have Lola Adams. Isn't it just nice? "
" Oh my gosh! "Georgina squealed excitedly.
" See, you're already happy, "The principal said smiling and turned to Susanna," Yours is grade 12a..... The best class we have so far . Important landmarks we have the almighty Alan Brailsford. Isn't it beautiful? "
" It is , Sir"Susanna replied.
" Wait, what'd you mean? "Georgina suddenly asked.
The principal frowned," What do I mean? "
Clearly, no one had ever spoken to him that in manner and it occurred to Susanna that she'd made a huge mistake, one that could even cost them their scholarship .
" I think I deserve that class more than she does, "she blurted out.
Her statement was immediately met by the deadliest glare she had ever received from any person.
Unwillingly, a smile formed on Susanna's lips. She inwardly knew that this wouldn't be her day.
Indeed, it wasn't.
