Chapter 52: Blue Trait, Red Trait, and Gold Trait [Kaio-ken]!
Binding traits don't consume a trait slot, much like a TM move for Pokémon.
Starting with the daily trait, Hikaru already felt a surge of excitement for the upcoming trait reveals.
[Blue Trait (Thorn Armor)] – "When the wearer is hit, it reflects 0-30% of the damage back to the attacker. The reflection percentage is determined by the attacker's power level."
Hikaru's eyes lit up. This was an excellent trait, especially for Charmeleon, who was quickly becoming his go-to defensive powerhouse.
With its long-lasting stamina, Charmeleon could sustain prolonged battles and dish out significant counterattacks.
---
Next, it was time for the monthly trait.
Though it was another blue trait, Hikaru wasn't disappointed. For Charmeleon, this trait was almost as good as a purple-tier one.
"Charmeleon is truly built for endurance and power… a real tank," Hikaru thought with satisfaction.
---
Then came the quarterly trait. Red light flashed as the system unveiled a powerful red-tier trait:
[Red Trait (Psychic Storm)] – "Unleashes all psychic energy at once, creating a massive storm that deals immense damage to both the mind and body. Normal type: Base Power 80, Psychic type: Base Power 120."
This was perfect for Kirlia. Without hesitation, Hikaru equipped it to her.
"Kirlia~!"
Kirlia blinked in confusion before realizing she had just learned a powerful new move. Overjoyed, she spun around, her psychic energy crackling with newfound strength.
"Kirlia~!" (I love you, Hikaru!)
She floated over and planted a kiss on Hikaru's cheek, leaving him momentarily flustered.
---
Finally, it was time for the semi-annual trait. Hikaru's heart pounded as he clicked to reveal it.
Golden light burst forth—a gold-tier trait!
[Gold Trait (Kaio-ken)] – "Temporarily boosts physical capabilities, energy output, and overall performance by 50% or more. After use, the user will experience fatigue. (Applicable only to Fighting-type Pokémon.)"
"Kaio-ken…"
Hikaru instantly recognized it as a reference to Dragon Ball Z, where it was a technique that multiplied a fighter's power for a short time.
Though thrilled with the trait, Hikaru realized he didn't currently have any Fighting-type Pokémon to make use of it.
"If only Charmeleon could use this," Hikaru sighed. With its immense potential, Kaio-ken would elevate Charmeleon to an entirely new level.
"Well, no matter. I'll just have to catch a Fighting-type Pokémon in the future!"
---
After distributing the traits, Hikaru turned his attention to the system store.
With 1,678 trait coins in his balance, he now had enough to buy the Legendary Pokémon Summon Card.
But…
Did he have the power to tame a Legendary Pokémon if one appeared?
The unpredictability of the summon gave him pause. What if the summoned Legendary Pokémon was hostile toward humans?
Without a Master Ball, Hikaru decided against the gamble, opting instead to purchase the Charizard Mega Evolution Key Stone.
This key stone allowed his future Charizard to undergo both Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y transformations.
"Wait a second…" Hikaru realized. "In this world, Mega Evolution hasn't even been discovered yet!"
An opportunity dawned on him. Once he achieved official researcher status, he could publish a groundbreaking paper on Mega Evolution and its mechanics.
---
That evening, the arena was packed. Not a single seat was left empty, and the tournament's viewership ratings soared to new heights.
The crowd wasn't just here for the Challenge Tournament—they were here to witness Hikaru's challenge.
---
So far, only one participant had successfully defeated three gym leaders. When asked if they wanted to continue for a secret grand prize, they had declined.
But Hikaru was different.
A high school sophomore standing on the verge of earning a professional trainer license? That was unheard of in Shuimu City.
For many, Hikaru had already become a symbol of hope and talent for the city's youth.
---
When it was finally his turn, Hikaru chose to challenge the Fire Gym first.
"Alright, folks! Hikaru is back on the battlefield! Can you believe how quickly this young man has risen to prominence?"
The announcer, the same one from the high school tournament, hyped up the crowd with fervor.
As Hikaru stepped into the arena, Fire Gym Leader Zhong yue entered from the opposite side, his Charizard following close behind.
"You brat!" Zhong yue exclaimed, half-jokingly.
He couldn't help but marvel at how far Hikaru had come in such a short time.
"In just six months, you've grown enough to challenge me on this stage… impressive!"
"Are you bringing out that shiny Frogadier of yours?" Zhong yue asked.
"Of course!" Hikaru replied.
With Water-type moves, Frogadier had the best chance against Fire-types.
---
"Go, Frogadier!"
Hikaru's shiny, jet-black Frogadier appeared with a flourish. Holding a gleaming Water Shuriken in one hand, it struck a cool, battle-ready pose.
The crowd erupted into cheers.
"Wow, that Frogadier is so cool!"
"He's got style and power!"
"Frogadier, marry me!"
Hikaru, using his Aura powers, couldn't help but overhear the comments.
"Geez, Frogadier, since when did you become such a show-off?" he muttered under his breath.
---
Zhong yue sent out a Quilava, its flames blazing brightly as it prepared for battle.
"Level 29," Hikaru noted. "Elite-tier. A strong opponent."
The announcer's voice boomed:
"Let the battle begin!"
"Quilava, use Rollout combined with Flame Wheel!" Zhong yue commanded.
The flaming Quilava curled into a ball, gaining speed and power as it charged toward Frogadier.
"Trying to end this quickly, huh?" Hikaru smirked. "Fine by me."
"Frogadier, let's show them our new move—Extreme Thunderbird!"
Electricity crackled around Frogadier as water spiraled to form a powerful shuriken.
The shuriken expanded into the shape of a brilliant electric bird, radiating immense power.
"Chirp!"
The electric bird screeched, soaring toward the oncoming Quilava.
To be continued...
