Capítulo 49: Desmera I

293AC

She watched from the tower of Olives as the great white ships entered the harbor, their sails were strung high above the water and their hulls looked like clouds bobbing on the ocean.

She wondered if her father's ships could look like that with the proper paint and sails. She imagined they could, but they wouldn't look nearly as impressive.

"Mmph, it seems your potential betrothed wishes to make an impression. Throw his money around." Desmera turned to look at her grandaunt, who had invited her cousin and her up for a tea-party at the Olive tower. "He could have done with being a little more timely though. That might make this feasting less farcical."

"The feast is to celebrate Mace's birth." Desmera quickly got out. "We just thought it would be polite to extend it out a bit."

She shuddered as the old woman's eye turned towards her. "Your brother is not a prince Desmera, no feast would normally be held to celebrate his birth, and certainly no feast to last ten days. No, half the Lords of the reach did not attend this feast because of the boy my nephew named after my idiot son." her grandaunt turned back to the waves. "They came to get the measure of the young Prince of Dragonstone. I know that's certainly why I'm here."

Desmera pouted, about to argue with the old woman when Margaery cut in. "I came because I thought it would be very romantic. I'm rather jealous actually." Desmera looked at her questioningly even as Olenna sighed. "What? It's not as if I'm likely to get a fairytale prince coming aboard a fleet of white ships to steal my hand away, Father is too fearful of Lord Stannis."

"Your father is less fearful of Lord Stannis than he ought to be, but he does dislike him, and for once his thick skull is actually working to his favor." the queen of thorns took another sip of her tea. "The Lord of Dragonstone is powerful and wealthy, if far too careless with his heir. The fact that he could finance this excuse for a pleasure cruise for the boy is proof enough of that."

Desmera stood up, glaring at her grandaunt "I won't have you speaking like that around Prince Arthur." She wanted to scream at the woman but she knew that wouldn't help. "Father wants this betrothal badly, and you should not ruin it with your tongue."

"I will speak as I wish, as I always do if the boy responds poorly than so be it. My nephew knew my tongue's nature before he invited me. Besides, would you have the Prince's future relatives lying to him? We are not Freys." Olenna relaxed into her chair as if she was simply unaware of Desmera's anger. "The Arbor has more to offer him than Dorne, or at least the resources that it can offer him are more valuable. It is your role and your father's to charm him, not mine."

"And yet you seek to hamper that role." Desmera said angrily. "I will hear no more of it."

She exchanged a final glance with her cousin as she made her way to the door off of the balcony. Her grandaunt was being entirely unreasonable, she would need to inform her father at once that they must keep Prince Arthur away from the Queen of Thorns is she were to properly woo him as she had been instructed.

It would already be hard enough to stomach wooing him, as he was scarred by greyscale, but she thought she might go have a fit if her hard work to make herself appealing to the Baratheon prince was thrown out by the old woman's infamous tongue.

With an annoyed grimace, she realized her hair had been slightly messed up in her tantrum, and she quickly drew a brush out of her bodice to put her hair back in order.

If she was to do her duty to House Redwyne, to bring him to their side, then everything ought to be perfect in her introduction to the boy. She would need to focus, be as keen and sharp as she was beautiful.

She was sure she could do it, make the boy look at her as a desirable wife, more than that big man-woman from Tarth or some Dornish whore, but she wasn't sure she would be able to see him the same way. He was rich surely, but not so much more than her father, and with less territory, and the rumors spoke that he was not pretty to look at, and no knight besides.

But then again, perhaps even a one-sided love could be turned to her advantage, make him buy her things, give her gifts, and it would please her father greatly as well.

'pah, look at me thinking of such things before I have even charmed him, to begin with.' she sighed, nodding to herself and continuing down the stares. 'I should get the measure of him first.'
