Kyouji Toda stared at Takao Ohga, who was shouting in horror in front of him, without taking him seriously.
He continued his questioning:
"You said Akikawa Kyousuke injected you with morphine and naloxone. Do you have any evidence?"
"There should be his fingerprints on the syringe and ampoule."
"Forensics has confirmed that only your fingerprints are present."
"This..."
Takao Ohga was stunned but continued,
"I checked the time before he came to me. It was around 12:10 in the afternoon."
"You just need to confirm Akikawa Kyousuke's alibi during that period to prove it!"
"The fact that he doesn't have an alibi doesn't prove he did those things to you," Toda Kyouji responded.
"Since you chose Mr. Hota's personal exhibition room as the place to attack Akikawa Kyousuke from the beginning, then I assume you verified beforehand that there were no cameras near the exhibition room, correct?"
Toda Kyouji looked at Ohga Takao and asked.
"Yes, there are no cameras near Hota's exhibition room," Ohga Takao admitted.
"Hmm... so it's the same as last time. Apart from the suspect's own accusations, there are no flaws in the witnesses, physical evidence, or motives," Toda Kyouji muttered, frowning deeply.
The biggest difference between Akikawa Kyousuke and most criminals he had encountered was that Akikawa's motives didn't align with typical reasoning. In other words, without sufficient evidence, establishing intent was incredibly difficult.
After a long pause, Toda Kyouji lifted his head again.
"One last question. How did you, an armed man, get subdued by him?"
"Akikawa is so thin. Even if you lack combat skills, I doubt he could overpower you," Toda said.
"Uh, I was just careless," Takao Ohga replied awkwardly.
"It was mainly because he caught me off guard. I wasn't suspicious of him at all, so he attacked me unexpectedly."
Takao Ohga concealed the fact that he had drawn a weapon. He felt that admitting this would make the detective mock him.
"When I woke up, he had already injected me with morphine and naloxone. While doing so, he kept saying something like 'based on my rough memory,' but his expression made it clear he knew the exact effects of those drugs and where to inject them!"
"Akikawa is no ordinary person!"
The more Takao Ohga spoke, the angrier he became. But Toda Kyouji saw through him. Ohga's anger was a facade to cover his inner fear of Akikawa Kyousuke.
"Alright, enough barking." Toda Kyouji waved his hand irritably. Takao Ohga gradually fell silent.
"I've finished my questions. We'll now start the formal interrogation," Toda said, standing up. He opened the door to the interrogation room and called in his subordinate, Inspector Takuto Nakajima.
When Nakajima entered, he glanced at the notebook and pen in front of Takao Ohga. Turning, he switched on the camera.
"Alright, let's begin the formal interrogation now," Nakajima announced.
Takao Ohga looked at Kyouji Toda, who sat opposite him with a smile. Ohga believed Akikawa Kyousuke would suffer greatly under this detective.
At the same time, distancing himself from the morphine incident felt like killing two birds with one stone. Even though he had killed two people, he thought that admitting guilt with a good attitude would lead to lighter consequences.
If drug trafficking and a poor attitude toward admitting his crimes were added to his charges, he might face the death penalty. But now, Ohga Takao felt much more relaxed.
Toda Kyouji picked up the case file and read aloud:
"Takao Ohga, you are suspected of recommending and selling morphine to Tsunekazu Takasaka, Ryo Sogabe, Miho Soga, and others. Worried that the truth would come to light, you murdered Ryo Sogabe and Miho Soga with a firearm.
You also planned to kill artist Akikawa Kyousuke and attempted to frame Hotta Yoshitoki for the crime.
Do you admit to these actions?"
Toda's voice made Ohga Takao's heart pound fiercely. His expression changed to one of disbelief as he stared at Kyouji Toda, who looked at him with playful eyes.
After a few seconds, Takao Ohga realized that Toda Kyouji had decided to break their supposed agreement halfway through the process, simply because there wasn't direct evidence.
No—he had never intended to honor their agreement from the start. Ohga recalled Toda's earlier words:
"I care more about the truth than fulfilling my superior's mission."
This meant Toda Kyouji didn't care about presenting legal evidence on camera. As long as he confirmed guilt, that was enough.
Ohga Takao realized he had misjudged another person—just like he had misjudged Akikawa Kyousuke.
This revelation filled Ohga with anger and a deep sense of grievance far stronger than when the detective had "falsely accused" him earlier.
In a moment of madness, Ohga grabbed the pen on the table and stabbed it toward Toda Kyouji's carotid artery.
The familiar "click" sound echoed in the interrogation room, making Nakajima Takuto tremble. He swiftly grabbed Ohga's twisted wrist and, as Ohga screamed in pain, delivered a solid kick to his face.
"Why do so many bastards want to attack cops these days?" Toda shouted angrily.
But Takuto Nakajima knew that behind the camera, Toda Kyouji's face likely wore a terrifyingly fierce smile.
"Murder, attempted murder, solicitation, drug trafficking, and evidence tampering," Toda said mockingly.
"Now add assaulting a police officer. Just wait for death."
Toda Kyouji sneered before turning and leaving the interrogation room.
