After the guards and Demacia passed through the massive bronze gate, the monsters they had anticipated were nowhere to be found. Instead, all they encountered was an eerie coldness.
The players felt as though they had entered a haunted house, frequently gasping at the sight of skeletons scattered around. Some of the more timid female players shrieked in terror at sudden bursts of phosphorescent fire or the scurrying sounds of mice, adding a bit of amusement to the otherwise tense atmosphere.
"Something's off," Wei Lu muttered quietly, either to Demacia or to his growing audience in the live stream. "We should've died at least a couple of times by now. But look, 200 gold coins—just handed to us? This feels wrong."
Demacia thought for a moment before replying, "Be cautious, but remember—this is just a game. Death only costs a level, right? I've hidden my gear, so I'm not too worried."
"Yeah, it's just a game," Wei Lu said with a sigh.
"Holy crap, guys, look at this!" one player shouted. "A night-shining pearl, the size of a fist! Should we give this to Bai Yi? It looks like it's worth a lot."
"Don't steal it! This is part of the mission for ten thousand people. If you mess it up, you'll be offline dead."
"Haha, I'm just messing with you. Boss, once you finish the mission, are you still accepting gold coins? If so, I'll sell some to you."
"Of course. I'll take as many as you want, just lowering the price to 300 yuan per piece."
"Heh, that's a good deal. I'll sell to you too!"
"Me too!"
As they explored further, the eerie atmosphere of the tomb faded away—replaced by the thrill of accumulating wealth. The group calmed, with Wei Lu and Demacia continuing to follow the main group deeper inside.
There were no traps, no monsters. Even when they pried open some coffins, the contents seemed off, yet nothing out of the ordinary happened.
Two hours passed without incident, and the group arrived at the main chamber of the tomb. The smell was horrendous, but it didn't stop the players. One of them casually picked up a scarlet scroll from the coffin and asked, "What's this? It's sitting right on top of the coffin."
"Probably some kind of corpse-suppressing charm," another player shrugged. "Who cares? Let's open the coffin. Once we've looted it, we're out."
The player shrugged and stuffed the scroll into their pocket, then joined the others in prying the lid off the coffin.
In a corner, a group of advanced players exchanged puzzled glances. They couldn't believe what they were seeing. Were they really being handed gold coins? No danger at all?
"This doesn't feel right. Did they really just give us gold coins?"
"Yeah, it feels wrong. For such a high-stakes mission, it's way too easy."
"Maybe that's the way it's supposed to be. After all, if we knew an alien invasion was coming, how would we handle it?"
"Catch them first. Damn, Bai Yi, Bai Yueguang!"
"What about that Sabo guy? He seems impressive."
"Too ugly. Not interested."
"+1"
The experts exchanged looks. They had been sweeping through the tomb, practically emptying it. If the coffins weren't permanently sealed to the ground, they might have emptied those too.
"Brother Wei, what's going on here?"
Wei Lu just shook his head. "I don't get it. Nothing about this game makes sense."
"Whatever. You can learn skills in the Hall of Knowledge. Have you decided on your path yet? Bai Yi's an alchemist, and he seems pretty strong. Anybody here considering alchemy?"
"Forget it. I've seen the alchemist's traits. You can only use it as a side job unless you want to make money off it."
"That's true. Anyway, I found 200 gold coins for free. I'm happy about that."
The advanced players began to leave, and the players who had looted the tomb reluctantly followed, still thrilled by their unexpected fortune.
Though they had hoped for monsters, their excitement over the gold made up for it. Tens of thousands of dollars in loot!
As they neared the foot of the mountain, the unease that had begun to dissipate in Wei Lu returned.
"Maybe this is just a feature of the game," he murmured, trying to reassure himself.
[Host, look behind!!! Host]
The sudden barrage of messages made Wei Lu's heart race. He turned around, eyes widening in shock. There, standing between the players and the peak of the mountain, was a terrifying creature: its eyes glowing red, mist swirling around its face, and tentacles emerging from its body. He couldn't say when it had appeared.
"Shit! What is that?"
A player's accidental glance back triggered a loud, terrified scream, and it wasn't long before the others caught on. The monster lowered its body, then vanished from view in an instant, a red line flashing across the players' vision.
Before they could react, their consciousnesses were abruptly torn away.
"AHHHHHHHH!"
"What the hell is that?!"
The area was filled with screams as a red line swept over the players, covering them all. Thirty seconds later, the red line stopped, and a single message appeared on everyone's panel:
"You were torn apart by the Silver-level boss, Alchemist Demon. You are dead."
Bai Yi, standing calmly at the center of the chaos, looked at the pile of objects strewn across the ground. A grin spread across his face. His panel had refreshed.
[You killed 9,953 players. Experience points +99,530. Alchemist's favorability in the player camp permanently -50.]
With a soft puff, a tentacle emerged from Bai Yi's face, covered in blood mist. He pressed it back with a detached expression.
This form was still too powerful. His soul energy was starting to become unstable.
For now, he couldn't risk staying in this form any longer.
After collecting the contract and some high-value items from the pile, Bai Yi quickly stashed them in his space ring. Looking at the battlefield of destroyed equipment, he felt a brief pang of guilt. But only for a moment.
He had set this up, and now, the experience was flowing in.
His level shot up, and soon enough, the guilt was gone.
He didn't pick up the scattered equipment. Instead, he activated a teleportation array and vanished from the area, his speed exceeding 400 as he rushed down the mountain. In the blink of an eye, he was in another location.
The familiar disorienting sensation of teleportation squeezed his body, but he remained unaffected, his strength now comparable to an upper-silver warrior.
As the light around him faded, Bai Yi's form shifted, returning to his [Glory Hero] persona, White Plague. He stepped out of the cabin just as the angry players reached the base of the mountain, their faces twisted with rage.
Before they could confront him, Bai Yi spoke, his voice calm, regretful:
"It seems that what's inside was just too much for you. It's a shame, but if you give up now, I'll compensate you—100 copper coins, like last time."
His tone was so genuine that it made the players pause. But among the group, a few impatient voices rose.
"What kind of bullshit mission is this? Do you think we can beat that monster now? You set us up for failure!"
The players around nodded in agreement. Their mission items were gone, they had dropped a level, and most of their equipment had been destroyed. It felt like a total loss.
Bai Yi, ever the tactician, took a moment before responding.
"The contract's power is ineffective against your wonders. If I go in, a forbidden area will appear. As I said, this is a life-or-death mission. If you don't want to continue, no one is forcing you. There will still be compensation. How about it?"
The players hesitated, but the more experienced ones understood. Of course, a mission with such a high reward would come with danger.
Wei Lu stepped forward, saying, "Sorry, Mr. Bai Yi, the monster is too powerful, and people are upset. Do we need to bring all the loot here?"
"No," Bai Yi said, shaking his head. "Just bring the items to the foot of the mountain."
He waved his hand, sending a magical resonance through the air.
The players looked at each other before nodding, some still grumbling but agreeing to push forward. After all, the 200 gold coins were still a tempting prize.
"Let's go, Bai Yi. Please teleport us again."
[White Plague Favorability +1.]
With a subtle nod, Bai Yi initiated the teleportation, and the players vanished in an instant.
Walking back to the cabin with a slight smile, he felt the familiar thrill rise again. His pupils glinted red as he prepared for the next wave of destruction.
