Capítulo 13: Chapter 13: Shadow Observations

Hikaru stood in the expansive training ground behind his family home, the morning sun casting long shadows across the familiar terrain. The soft earth beneath his feet and the gentle rustle of leaves overhead created a comforting backdrop for his training. Today was crucial, he was ready to delve deeper into understanding his abilities and refining his skills.

As he settled into a comfortable spot, Hikaru opened his well-worn notepad and began to write. The first page filled with notes detailed his shadow abilities, focusing on their descriptions, strengths, and weaknesses.

1. Shadow Senses

Description: He possesses an extraordinary ability to sense shadows, allowing him to perceive his surroundings without relying on sight. By channeling chakra into his shadow, he can detect the presence, location, and movements of the shadows of objects and people within a maximum range of about 1000 meters, with an optimal efficiency range of 250 meters.

Strengths:

Enhanced Awareness: This ability provides him with a heightened sense of awareness, enabling him to navigate and move freely despite his blindness.

High Accuracy: He can track moving objects with remarkable precision within his shadow sense range, allowing him to anticipate actions before they occur.

Weaknesses:

Limited to Shadows: He can only sense the shadows of objects and people, which becomes a significant disadvantage against jutsu that don't create shadows (like fire, lightning or wind techniques).

Can't Sense Chakra: he cannot sense static chakra with his shadows, limiting his ability to assess opponents' chakra levels.

Chakra Consumption: The continuous use of this ability requires a sustained amount of chakra, restricting its use to short periods.

2. Chakra Recycling

Description: This technique enables him to channel chakra back and forth between himself and his shadow. This process enhances his physical abilities and mobility while allowing his shadow to serve as a conduit for chakra flow.

Strengths:

Enhanced Physical Abilities: The technique boosts his speed, agility, and strength, allowing him to perform at peak physical condition.

Enhanced Senses: His other senses, such as smell and hearing, are significantly increased, helping him detect subtle changes in his environment.

Energy Efficiency: Chakra recycling minimizes the overall chakra consumption required for Shadow Senses, allowing him to use it for a long time.

Weaknesses:

Disruption of Chakra Flow: The continuous recycling can disrupt his chakra flow, making it challenging to perform other ninjutsu while active.

Sensitive Senses: While enhanced senses can be beneficial, they can also become overwhelming, causing distractions that may hinder his performance.

3. Shadow Sentinels

Description: This advanced technique allows him to detach his shadow from his body, enabling it to move independently while maintaining its ability to utilize shadow senses for surveillance and ambushes.

Strengths:

Extended Range: By sending his shadow to a different location, he can expand the reach of his shadow senses, effectively gathering information from multiple areas simultaneously.

Stealth and Ambush: This ability is ideal for reconnaissance and strategic attacks, allowing him to set up ambushes without being physically present to observe his targets.

Invisibility: His shadow only moves within the shadows, making it nearly invisible to the naked eye, though it's uncertain if this applies against sensing techniques.

Weaknesses:

Loss of Sensory Connection: While his shadow is detached, he cannot use his shadow senses from his original location, leaving him vulnerable to attacks.

Limited Senses: The shadow can only utilize shadow senses in its immediate vicinity, it cannot hear, smell, or touch anything, which limits its effectiveness in dynamic situations.

Hikaru stared intently at his notepad, lost in thought as he meticulously documented his shadow abilities, detailing their strengths and weaknesses. As he wrote, a revelation struck him with the force of a bolt of lightning. He paused, looking up, a mix of confusion and enlightenment flooding his mind. Until this moment, he had always assumed that the source of his power lay solely within his own shadow. This belief had driven his training and experimentation over the past two years, leading him to focus on strengthening his connection with his shadow. However, he now realized that this assumption was fundamentally flawed.

Reflecting on his journey, Hikaru thought back to the early days of his training. He remembered how he believed that his shadow was the key to his abilities, the reason he could use his shadow senses effectively. This misconception had caused him to direct all his efforts toward enhancing that bond. However, the truth was that he had already been able to tap into shadow senses long before he even awakened his chakra. Though weak and limited in range, he had used this ability in the past, managing to sense his surroundings even without the full strength of his chakra or the enhanced techniques he had developed later.

He recalled the times when he had to concentrate intently, focusing every ounce of mental energy just to activate his shadow senses. Back then, he couldn't move while using them; he had to remain still and centered, drawing on an instinctive understanding of the shadows around him. This memory illuminated a critical point: it wasn't just his shadow that enabled his abilities but rather an innate connection to the very essence of shadows themselves. The realization filled him with a sense of wonder, if he could sense shadows without the aid of chakra, what else he can do with them?

Determined to explore this newfound understanding, Hikaru decided to test the limits of his abilities right then and there. He took a deep breath, closing his eyes to focus. As he began to channel chakra into his shadow, he felt the familiar rush of energy coursing through him, amplifying his senses. With this activation, he could sense shadows around him with precision, picking up the slightest movements in the training ground.

Next, he carefully cut off the flow of chakra, shifting his focus to activate his shadow senses without it. He tried to recall the feeling he experienced when using chakra, attempting to replicate that sensation. Concentrating deeply, he activated his shadow senses in the small radius around him, pushing himself to connect with the shadows as he had done before.

The experiment had proven to be positive, but it was incredibly taxing. A strong headache suddenly attacked him, causing him to halt his efforts. Hikaru gripped his temples, the pain reminding him of the strain he was placing on his mind.

Although he doesn't have to stand still and focusing and gathering all of his energy to sense the shadow like he was a younger, but it's still a very demanding job.

nevertheless it's possible.

After resting for a while, Hikaru sat up and rubbed the back of his neck, still feeling the lingering effects of his earlier headache. As he gathered his thoughts, a more urgent question began to surface in his mind: Why did his shadows behave so strangely when that ninjutsu had been near him? The memory of the incident played vividly in his mind—the way the shadows had twisted and danced, almost as if they were alive, responding to the energy of the jutsu. It intrigued him, and he felt compelled to explore this mystery further.

Determined to find answers, Hikaru focused his chakra and activated his shadow senses once again, this time with full power. He expanded his awareness, reaching out to cover a significant portion of the village. As he extended his senses, he felt the familiar thrill of excitement mingling with a tinge of apprehension. It's not the first time he does that, but it was one thing to observe his training ground or the village, it was another to spy on the village's shinobi while they practiced their techniques.

Hikaru knew it was considered highly forbidding to spy on a shinobi during their training. Techniques and jutsu were intensely personal aspects of a shinobi's identity, exposing them could lead to serious consequences. In the wrong hands, this information could be fatal. However, a rebellious thought flitted through his mind: What they don't know won't harm them. It was an easy rationalization, but it still gnawed at the back of his mind as he prepared to probe deeper into the hidden world of ninjutsu.

As he concentrated, he soon began to watch shinobi practice their techniques. His heart raced as he observed them moving with precision, forming intricate hand signs that indicated the activation of ninjutsu. The energy pulsed around them, vibrant and potent. He could feel the surge in the grass around them, a tangible sign of the power being summoned. But as he focused on their movements, it was like before: while he could sense the ninjutsu as it formed, he could only detect those techniques that cast shadows.

He noted that the ninjutsu he could fully sense—such as earth or water techniques—exhibited their usual behavior, their shadows stretching and shifting with the force of their power. However, when it came to techniques like fire and lightning, he found that he could only trace their movement while they cast the shadows away. The brightness of their flames obliterated their shadows but not the shadows around them, rendering them nearly invisible to his senses but can somehow trace them. Wind-based jutsu, on the other hand, proved to be a complete enigma, he couldn't detect them at all, lost to the very air that carried them.

So the question stands,

why the shadows behaved differently when Kaito attacked him?
