54.54% Apocalypse: A Female Regressor's Second Chance / Chapter 17: Gathering Supplies

Capítulo 17: Gathering Supplies

The first night passed quietly for Laura and her team, but the sounds of distant screams and monstrous howls echoed through the darkness, a haunting reminder of the world beyond their rooftop refuge.

As the morning sun rose, casting a muted glow over the city, the dark clouds overhead continued to linger, refusing to let the sunlight fully break through. It was a new day, but the apocalypse showed no signs of lifting.

Laura moved through the makeshift camp silently, gently rousing each of her teammates. She'd taken the first and last watch of the night, making sure to give the others as much rest as possible.

Each person awoke slowly, blinking groggily, until their eyes registered the ruins stretching out before them—a stark reminder that everything they'd experienced the day before had been very real.

"Good morning," Laura greeted them with a quiet smile.

She looked at each of them as they sat up, taking in the tense expressions and slight wariness in their eyes. "Just in case any of you were hoping yesterday was a bad dream, I'm afraid it wasn't. This is the world we're living in now."

They all looked around, taking in the sight of the desolate cityscape and the darkened sky. Essei shivered slightly, rubbing her arms as if to chase away the chill of the night.

Miara stayed silent, her gaze fixed on the horizon, where the sun struggled to break through the clouds.

"Now," Laura continued, "we're running on limited supplies. Since I'm the only one with anything stored, that won't last us long. Our first mission today is to secure more food and supplies. If we're lucky, we might even come across some useful weapons or items."

Eric nodded, his determination returning as he stretched his shoulders, already eager to test his new elemental skills in the daylight. "So, where are we headed?"

Laura pointed to a set of stairs leading down to the lower floors of their building. "We'll start by searching nearby shops, grocery stores, or any place that could have non-perishable items. We'll have to be careful—we'll be moving through the open, and that means more potential encounters."

As the team gathered their belongings, Essei hesitated, glancing at Laura. "Are we… Are we ready for this?"

Laura looked her squarely in the eye. "If we stay here too long without resources, we'll be forced into dangerous situations when we're weaker and desperate. Now is the best time to act, especially while most creatures are likely still farther away after last night's chaos. We move together, we stay quiet, and we don't take unnecessary risks. Stick close, and we'll be fine."

With that, Laura led them down the cracked staircase and through the lower floors of the building, every footstep cautious and measured. She moved first, her hand gripping her knife, alert for any sounds of movement beyond the shadows.

Once they exited the building, they moved into the open street, keeping to the edges and darting from cover to cover.

The city was a patchwork of ruin—cars were overturned, buildings had crumbled, and random fires burned unattended. Despite the destruction, a few storefronts remained mostly intact.

Soon, they spotted a small market down the street, its windows shattered but its shelves still visible through the broken glass. Laura halted the group behind an overturned bus, scanning the area carefully.

"We'll start there," she said in a low voice, gesturing toward the market. "Essei, take the lead with me. Eric, cover Miara and keep your spells ready in case anything shows up."

The group advanced quietly toward the market. As they reached the entrance, Laura held up a hand, signaling for them to stop. She strained her ears, listening for any signs of movement. After a few seconds of silence, she nodded, and they entered cautiously.

Inside, the place was a mess. Shelves had been overturned, cans and boxes scattered across the floor, but there were still a few items intact on the higher shelves. Laura quickly signaled for them to spread out, gesturing for each person to take a specific aisle.

"Grab anything that looks useful," she whispered. "Focus on canned goods, sealed packages, and any containers of water."

They worked quickly, filling their inventories with what little they could find. Miara managed to locate a stash of water bottles, and Essei found a small cache of canned beans and dried fruit.

Laura continued to scan the shelves, her eyes catching sight of a glint further down the aisle. She approached cautiously, discovering a dusty metal box tucked behind some empty crates. She pried it open and found a small survival knife, sharp and sturdy, as well as a few basic medical supplies.

Meanwhile, Eric inspected a section toward the back of the store. His eyes lit up as he found a small container filled with what looked like energy bars, still sealed and untouched.

He quickly stuffed them into his inventory, then continued to scan the area for anything that could prove useful. He spotted a few packets of instant coffee and tea, realizing with a pang of nostalgia that even small comforts like these might make a difference.

Just as they were finishing up, Laura felt a chill. She glanced at the front of the store and noticed a shadow moving just outside. She froze, signaling for the others to stay silent.

They huddled low behind the shelves as the creature entered the store, its massive, distorted frame blocking out the light from the door. It sniffed the air, its elongated snout twitching as it searched for any sign of movement.

Eric's hand tightened around the hilt of his dagger, and Laura placed a steadying hand on his shoulder, her gaze focused on the creature's movements.

She could feel the tension radiating from the others as the beast prowled the aisles, its heavy footsteps growing louder as it moved closer.

They held their breath as the creature turned its head toward them, its red eyes narrowing. For a few tense moments, it seemed to be staring directly at them. Laura's pulse thundered in her ears, but she remained motionless, praying the darkness of the store would hide them.

After what felt like an eternity, the creature finally lost interest and moved toward the back of the store, its footsteps fading into the distance. Laura waited a few seconds more, making sure it was truly gone, before exhaling quietly.

"Let's get out of here," she whispered, motioning for them to move quickly and silently toward the exit.

The group slipped out of the market, their hearts still pounding from the close call. They moved back into the shadows outside, carefully retracing their steps. As they made their way down a side street, Essei exhaled sharply, shaking her head in disbelief.

"That… that thing was huge," she whispered. "I thought it was going to rip us apart."

"We got lucky," Laura replied. "But luck won't keep us alive forever. That's why we're building our supplies and staying alert."

Miara clutched her newfound water bottles, her hands trembling slightly. "How much worse is this going to get?" she asked, her voice barely audible.

Laura paused, glancing back at the desolate city around them. "The creatures will get stronger, and so will we. We'll have to be smarter, faster, and more prepared for what's coming. But for now, we made it through today—and that's all we need to focus on."

The group pressed on, moving toward their next objective. This was only the beginning of their survival journey, and Laura knew that each day would bring new challenges. But with a team she trusted, she felt a flicker of hope amidst the darkness. They had each other, they had their abilities, and they had a mission.

For now, that would have to be enough.
