100% The Phoenix Overwhelms the World / Chapter 234: Epilogue: For All Eternity, We Shall Never Forsake One Another (Part II)

Capítulo 234: Epilogue: For All Eternity, We Shall Never Forsake One Another (Part II)

Lei An echoed, puzzled. He had yet to spot Bai Pingting; had she not always been by the queen's side, inseparable? The absence of others, including Lan Lvzhu and the like, only added to his confusion. Several times he had wanted to inquire about Xuan Yue, but Lu Yi had restrained him. As she opened her mouth to explain, tears brimmed in her eyes, and she wept repeatedly, reluctant to speak of the matter.

Bai Fu Ren was responsible for their deaths—those deaths? Lei An suddenly realized something and chased after her.

"Yue Ying died in this very place; at that time, the ground was littered with their bodies."

Xian Yue halted near the entrance of Wu Hui Valley: "Here, Lu Zhu blocked an arrow for me."

Every memory was vivid, as if it had just occurred. Just a moment ago, everyone praised her extraordinary beauty, yet in that moment, she felt utterly powerless.

She forced a smile, steeped in sorrow, inhaled deeply, and her eyes reddened.

"Xian Yue, it's my fault; my negligence allowed the people of Xuanyuan to seize the opportunity. If only I had arrived in time, those lives might have been spared."

Bai Zhan Feng stepped forward, clasping her shoulders. How had she become so thin and fragile? She was so gaunt that it seemed her bones were the only thing left. Despite her penchant for sleeping and eating, she had wasted away, fragile as glass, so vulnerable that he feared a gentle squeeze might shatter her—such a sight tugged at his heart.

Xian Yue tilted her head to meet Bai Zhan Feng's gaze, then glanced at Bai Ao, and smiled.

Beneath the starry sky, her pale, unadorned face was strikingly wan; her long lashes were suddenly blurred by tears. Though he had seen her cry before, never had he witnessed her weeping so quietly—silent tears woven with a profound, inescapable sorrow.

Xian Yue scoffed coldly and brushed his hand away without hesitation: "Of course, Young Master Bai cannot escape responsibility. Bai Fu Ren, let us proceed." Although Bai Zhan Feng had not participated in these events, could he claim that they bore no relation to him? She longed for vengeance yet hoped to contain her anguish, knowing that those lives were lost for her sake. What right did she have to unleash her grief? Thus, she swallowed her pain, burdened by the weight of memories, questioning if she would bear such shackles for a lifetime. She felt weary; she had forfeited her right to happiness, yet why must she inflict pain upon those closest to her? All she desired was not much—why must each joy be stripped away?

Her voice was weary as she held Chen Ruo Xi's hand, walking ahead with unsteady steps. Green Yi rushed forward to support her. Xian Yue offered a faint smile: "I'm fine."

How could she allow herself to falter now? She would never permit herself to face any misfortune; even in despair, she would not succumb to such an end.

Her smile belied the tears that flowed freely; the surroundings felt vast and empty, the mountain breeze cool, yet she was suffocated, on the verge of tears. Releasing Chen Ruo Xi's hand, she stepped inward.

If she could, she would rather never step foot in this place again. Those memories were ones she wished to forget, yet she knew that was impossible. To honor those who had perished, she must be a little cruel to herself, a little more cruel, until the blade sank deep and blood flowed freely without causing her pain, for her heart had grown numb. She longed to return to her former self, to laugh with reckless abandon, wishing to become the carefree princess they had adored, but that was unattainable; she truly could not manage it.

Chen Ruo Xi stood frozen, staring blankly at Xian Yue's proximity, her hands clenched tightly beneath her long sleeves.

She regretted it—this version of Xian Yue was terrifying. Indeed, how could a woman capable of becoming the Queen of Feng Nation and the Queen of Lan Nation be an ordinary person? Yet, how did she know of Yi Lan's death? How could she possibly know?

No, this matter had nothing to do with her; those lives had been taken by the people of Xuanyuan. What connection did she have? This woman had ruthlessly burned and killed countless Xuanyuan soldiers; Xuanyuan Hao had merely slain two hundred of her own. What right did she have to be so heartbroken? The cycle of cause and effect, retribution unsparing—this was her just deserts.

"Let's go."

Bai Zhan Feng cast a glance at Chen Ruo Xi, his voice laden with weight: "Chen Ruo Xi, if it was truly you, no one would protect you." If he were to shield her, he would become a mere shell of a man; could he truly protect her? How could Bai Zhan Feng face the daughter known as Feng Xian Yue?

Bai Zhan Feng believed in Xian Yue; though she loved mischief, she was not one to cause trouble without reason. He was foolish, yet not so foolish as to be entirely oblivious.

Chen Ruo Xi gritted her teeth; Yi Lan was dead. Without evidence, even if she were the Queen of Lan Nation, how could she be compelled to admit it?

The cave was damp and confining, the flickering torchlight casting eerie shadows on the walls, appearing as specters seeking vengeance.

The howling wind reverberated, a mournful wail, and in the depths of the night, it grew increasingly terrifying. Chen Ruo Xi's heart raced, her breathing cautious as she closely followed Bai Zhan Feng. The night breeze was icy against her skin; her clothes were already soaked through, clinging to her, particularly uncomfortable against her slightly swollen abdomen.

"Sister Ping Ting, I have come to see you."

Xian Yue's voice echoed softly against the quiet, vast cliff. Behind her, Lei An shuddered—had Bai Ping Ting really died? Were the dreams of the Young Master true?

Not long after Xian Yue's arrival, Bai Zhan Feng and Chen Ruo Xi followed her inside.

"Princess, here are the candles and joss paper you requested."

Green Yi accepted the candles and a basket filled with joss paper from Xiao Yin and handed them to Xian Yue. Before she could finish speaking, tears began to flow. This time, Xian Yue brought with her the elite of the Feng army, skilled in both combat and manners, earning the admiration of all. Particularly Bai Ping Ting; over the years, Xian Yue had been at Li Hua Studio, managing everything herself. Their understanding of Xian Yue had been gleaned from her words; if they revered Xian Yue as a deity, Bai Ping Ting was surely her emissary, illuminating their path with hope.

"On that day, we were cornered by Xuanyuan's troops in this dire predicament. We wove silk into chains, and when only twenty of us remained, the tree roots uprooted. Sister Ping Ting was right behind me; when I moved forward, she fell. She need not have died—it was all for me."

As she spoke, Xian Yue scattered the joss paper over the cliff, tears streaming down rapidly. Unless one had experienced it firsthand, who could fathom the grandeur of that day? They had perished, each falling for her, their bodies battered and bloodied, whether their eyes were open or closed, she envisioned their forms.

"The remaining ones clung tightly to the tree roots. Some were swept away with the roots, while others, fearing capture by Xuanyuan and the harm it might bring me, all jumped down. Even though they were told to surrender and assured they would not be abandoned, why did they still leap? They were all so young, their lives as beautiful as flowers."

"Princess."

A soldier behind her knelt, weeping.

Though she had not experienced it herself, the thought of that scene brought tears to her eyes.

Xian Yue placed the lit candle on the ground and surveyed the surroundings: "This place is even more desolate than the back mountains of Feng Nation's royal tomb, so cold and barren."

"You all have spent so many years together in playful banter; parting must be difficult. They should be reluctant to leave you as well. Let us light incense to honor them properly."

The others, with reddened eyes, approached Xian Yue and accepted the incense.

"Please, light incense for them as well."

Chen Ruo Xi gazed at the incense in Xian Yue's hand, then turned to the endless abyss, her heart racing. Originally reaching out to take it, she inexplicably withdrew her hand.

"Ruo Xi."

Bai Ao reprimanded softly, his sharp gaze filled with warning. Yet Chen Ruo Xi feigned ignorance. Why should she light incense for these people? Wasn't it enough to hand over Feng Xian Yue? That would solve everything. Their foolishness had cost them their lives—that was their fate.

"Your Highness, the dead cannot be revived; what meaning is there in your words now? Ultimately, they died for you. Speaking thus will only deepen my Young Master's guilt." This thought sent chills down her spine, yet such guilty words would never cross her lips. Bai Zhan Feng served as her best excuse.

"Is it only Bai Zhan Feng? Shouldn't Bai Fu Ren be even more unsettled?"

As the incense fell to the ground, Xian Yue's fingers slowly closed together. She lifted her head, raising her hand, and with a sharp crack, everyone turned in shock to Chen Ruo Xi, who covered her face and staggered backward into Bai Zhan Feng's embrace, her eyes wide, filled with disbelief, resentment, and hatred.

"Xuan Yue, what do you mean by this?"

Bai Zhanfeng held Chen Ruoxi protectively in his arms. Though he bore no fondness for her, she was nevertheless his legitimate wife, and she carried his child. Even if she had erred, he could not simply stand by.

Such was his fate, an inescapable destiny for the head of the Bai family.

"I merely wish to provide justice for those innocently slain."

Xuan Yue chuckled lightly. "Bai Zhanfeng, do you truly have so little faith in the Bai family's army? If they were so inept, how could your family have stood resolute in Chu for so long? If they were truly incapable, how could there still be a Chu state in this world? If they were utterly useless, how did you, Bai Zhanfeng, manage to await my arrival? No matter how incompetent they may be, Xuanyuan's forces could not have crossed the treacherous checkpoints to reach Liancheng without some knowledge of it. Have you never considered the implications of that?"

Bai Zhanfeng fell silent. He had indeed pondered the questions Xuan Yue posed, yet they remained enshrouded in confusion.

After Xuan Yue's departure, the villagers who once resided by the Bilo River returned, and while there were often travelers along its banks, the question remained: how could Xuanyuan's troops breach the extensive checkpoints and arrive in Liancheng? Especially in Ye City, without a passage permit, they would not have made it through. What could explain this?

"On the day you hurried back from Xiluo Village and I rushed away, how many knew of my whereabouts?"

Bai Zhanfeng fixed his gaze on Xuan Yue. Her face was so pale, even her smile appeared ashen, like translucent glass, as if it could shatter at any moment, vanishing entirely from his sight.

"On that day, apart from you, me, and the soldiers of the Phoenix Army, the only other person present was the woman in your arms."

Chen Ruoxi tilted her head. Seeing Bai Zhanfeng deep in thought, as though swayed by Xuan Yue's words, she quickly stood from Xuan Yue's embrace. "That does not prove it was me. Perhaps one of your good sisters betrayed you."

Chen Ruoxi held her head high; if she was deemed a traitor based on this flimsy reasoning, it was absurdly far-fetched.

"Enough."

Green garb stepped forward, casting a scornful glance at Chen Ruoxi and shouted angrily. The likes of Green Pearl and Lan would never do anything to harm the princess, even at the cost of their lives.

"Chen Ruoxi, try slandering them again."

Xuan Yue pointed at Chen Ruoxi, her bright eyes ablaze. She would not tolerate anyone defaming their spirits in this place.

"While Ruoxi's words may have been excessive, she does have a point. You brought along more than two hundred people; who can guarantee that none of them harbored ill intentions? To condemn Chen Ruoxi based on such flimsy evidence is simply too far-fetched. I understand your discomfort, but that cannot justify implicating the innocent."

"So, in the eyes of Young Master Bai, I am such a person."

Xuan Yue let out a cold scoff, leaning closer to Bai Zhanfeng, fixing him with an intense gaze. His face had become so unrecognizable. With a quiet sigh, she murmured, "Bai Zhanfeng, you have changed so much that I hardly recognize you. Is this still the spirited, righteous Bai Zhanfeng I once knew?"

Bai Zhanfeng appeared lost in thought as Xuan Yue smiled and cast a glance at Jin Mo.

A pang of realization struck Bai Zhanfeng. He was no longer the Bai Zhanfeng of yesteryear. How wonderful it would be if life could remain as it was at first glance. Though she had once regarded him with disdain, at least he had held hope then, able to engage her in playful banter, rather than confront her now in a bitter struggle for survival.

"Madam Bai, do you still remember Yi Lan?"

Jin Mo stepped forward, approaching Chen Ruoxi with a cold inquiry.

"Yi Lan?"

Chen Ruoxi murmured the name, her lips turning pale with fear.

"I went with Miss Yi Lan to Baili Village. She was pursued after discovering your secret, and in a bid to distract the assailants and allow me to seek help from Young Master Bai, she led them away. Did you not suspect her at all? How could Young Master Bai simply go to Liancheng?"

"You, you..."

Chen Ruoxi pointed at Jin Mo, yet her voice faltered, unable to utter a single word. How could this be? How could she possibly have an accomplice? She was incredulous, injured, and instead of fleeing, she had sheltered her ally.

"I heard that on that day, the military camp was sparsely populated. Where did the generals and soldiers of Baili Village go? Who ordered them to leave? Madam Bai, do you wish for me to summon them for a confrontation? Young Master Bai, are you not curious? Why was your wife, during her pregnancy, not properly resting at home but instead found in Liancheng?"

Chen Ruoxi's finger gradually drooped, her gaze fixed on Xuan Yue's aloof and confident silhouette, as if she could achieve anything in this world.

Indeed, as the queen of the Phoenix Nation, a remarkable figure beloved by the people, she was a woman of boundless capability. "Ha ha!"

"Ha ha!"

Suddenly, Chen Ruoxi burst into laughter, a manic sound laced with despair. Now that the situation had escalated to this point, any attempts at concealment were futile.

"Chen Ruoxi!"

Bai Zhanfeng stepped forward, gripping her shoulder, his face ashen. "Tell me this is not your doing."

Bai Zhanfeng shot a glance at Xuan Yue before quickly averting his gaze, overwhelmed by an anxiety heavier than Chen Ruoxi's. If she were indeed guilty, how could he ever face Xuan Yue again? How could he reconcile with the dead?

Chen Ruoxi's laughter grew ever more deranged as she shrugged off Bai Zhanfeng's hand, her gaze locked onto his dark, tumultuous eyes, icy and unsettling, as if she were a lost child. "Young Master Bai, it was I who did it."

Her calm voice belied a truth that enveloped Bai Zhanfeng in despair. At Death Valley, he had lost the chance to grasp her hand due to his father's interference, completely forfeiting any opportunity to win her back. Now, he risked losing her due to the woman he had married, the one chosen for him by his father, who nearly cost him her life.

Bai Zhanfeng released her hand, feeling as if he were a rusted sword, bereft of its former brilliance and edge. Fatigue washed over him, a sensation he had never experienced before, this pain far deeper than that of Death Valley. Then, all apprehension faded, and he felt as if his heart had ceased to beat, lifeless, devoid of any spark.

"Young Master, all I have done is for you."

Chen Ruoxi fixed her gaze on the grief-stricken Bai Zhanfeng, seizing the hand he had withdrawn from her. Her voice rose to a hysterical pitch.

"As long as she exists, you will never acknowledge my presence in your heart, not even with the child I carry within me. Nothing will change that."

"The rulers of this world are either Xuanyuan or the Lan Kingdom. The Bai and Chu families stand no chance of achieving anything; inevitably, they will become vassals. If the person before you each day is devoted to you, I would be left in despair. How can you allow him to witness your affections with the Lan King while disregarding him? And what of my child? As long as you are here, I can never earn his love; even his concern would be half-hearted."

"Yes, I informed Xuanyuan Hao of the Phoenix King's arrival at Xiluo Village, including the route and the passage token, all of which I provided. Feng Xianyue burned to death hundreds of thousands of Xuanyuan soldiers; now, only two hundred have perished. This is retribution!"

Chen Ruoxi glared at Xianyue, her words delivered with conviction, devoid of any remorse.

Xianyue let out a cold laugh, recognizing this as her version of love—a feverish obsession that had seeped into her bones. She was acutely aware of Bai Zhanfeng's terror regarding the situation, and right or wrong was no longer the point. Yet at this critical juncture, she still sought excuses for her misdeeds, dragging Bai Zhanfeng down with her. Such a woman was not only inferior to Liu Xinyou but was far more selfish than Gong Shaohua. In voicing these accusations, she showed no regard for Bai Zhanfeng's feelings.

Indeed, she spoke the truth; it was her retribution. With blood on her hands, claiming countless lives, how could she still dare to yearn for a carefree existence as before?

"Be quiet!"

Bai Zhanfeng roared, causing the entire Wuhui Valley to tremble. He lifted his hand, yet it hovered in the air, motionless. "Are you going to strike me? I've become this way because of you! If you despise me, why did you marry me in the first place? And now that you have, why not treat me kindly? You know well how this child came to be."

After a night of drunkenness, he had even called out another woman's name while embracing her. In that moment, she felt both hate and joy, desperately wishing for a child that would make him recognize her existence. Little did she know, he remained as cold as ever towards his pregnant wife.

"Was that person that night not affiliated with Minister Chen, but rather with Xuanyuan?"

Suddenly, he recalled that night, the figure lurking in the shadows. Chen Ruoxi had turned pale, perhaps from anxiety, as that person had slipped away right beneath his nose. Bai Zhanfeng felt as though something were welling up within him, threatening to explode—the realization that someone had escaped him.

"Yes, he was an advisor to Xuanyuan. I had intended to meet Xuanyuan Hao myself, but he failed to appear. To be so ambitious, and yet unable to even kill one woman, Xuanyuan Hao is nothing but a waste. No wonder he met with ruin!"

Bai Zhanfeng regarded her with a look of helplessness, his hand falling limply to his side as he turned to Xianyue and murmured, "Xianyue."

"No wonder Old Master Bai favors you; you truly possess great cunning."

Nearby, Bai Ao listened in shock to the exchange between Chen Ruoxi and Xianyue, staggering back a few steps until he collided with the wall, suddenly bursting into laughter.

"Old Master,"

Bai Zhanfeng turned, his expression filled with concern.

Bai Ao's eyes were fixed on Bai Zhanfeng, filled with guilt, regret, and deep pain.

After Zhan Tang and Wan Wan's early departure, he had always sought to provide the best for Feng'er. But he had been the one to harm him, watching Ruoxi grow up without truly understanding her. He realized now he was blind—how else could he have chosen Ruoxi? The legacy of the Bai family, built over centuries, was shattered due to his singular misjudgment.

Indeed, he had failed Feng'er.

Had he not insisted that Bai Zhanfeng inherit the Bai family? Had he not pressed for his marriage? Guilt over Zhan Tang and Wan Wan had driven him to seek only the best for Feng'er, yet he had never considered whether this was what Feng'er truly desired. If only Feng'er were still at Qiutian Villa, exploring the world as he wished; he wouldn't have to endure this now.

What could he possibly say? Could he plead with Xianyue for forgiveness on Feng'er's behalf? But with her in this state of resolute determination, nothing he uttered would hold any weight.

Such a broad-minded individual would not express such sentiments or take such drastic actions unless pushed to the brink of despair and hatred.

While she was accommodating, once she made a decision, who could alter it?

Xianyue stepped towards Chen Ruoxi, pressing a hand against her abdomen. Startled, Chen Ruoxi hurriedly protected her belly. "What do you intend to do?"

Xianyue withdrew her hand, stepping back a few paces. Drawing a sword from her robe, she seized Chen Ruoxi by the collar, the gleaming blade poised at her throat. "Do you think I shouldn't seek justice for those who died for me?"

Chen Ruoxi struggled fiercely, her hands striking Xianyue's injured chest. Xianyue stifled a groan as her wound reopened, blood gushing forth, causing her complexion to pale dramatically. Yet she refused to release Chen Ruoxi, dragging her towards the edge of the cliff. Chen Ruoxi panicked, staring into the abyss, swallowing hard.

Xianyue's gaze bore into Chen Ruoxi, who was once so proud, now overtaken by fear. Reflecting on their history, Xianyue questioned whether she had ever wronged Chen Ruoxi. Though she held disdain for Bai Zhanfeng, she had always done her utmost to alleviate her troubles. Yet now, Chen Ruoxi sought to eradicate her over such a ludicrous reason.

Yes, all of this was retribution, but those innocents, like Ya'er, were blameless. They were still so young, and soon enough, they would be free to live as they wished.

"Do you know fear?"

Xianyue scoffed, shoving Chen Ruoxi forcefully. Chen Ruoxi stumbled forward, eyes squeezed shut, letting out a terrified scream, her face ashen.

"Xianyue!"

Bai Zhanfeng shouted, grasping her hand with one hand and seizing Chen Ruoxi with the other.

His expression was filled with anguish as he struggled to look at Xianyue's face. "Death is irreversible; even if you kill Chen Ruoxi, it will change nothing."

Bai Zhanfeng loathed speaking such words, but what else could he say? What was there to say? He felt as if he were already in hell.

Xianyue chuckled softly. "Who says so?"

Staring at Bai Zhanfeng, her eyes brimmed with scorn. "Once the people around Sister Pingting see her, they will finally find peace, and I will not suffer as acutely."

Xianyue's gaze was fixed on Chen Ruoxi's pallid face, her body trembling, yet she smiled brightly. "See? Just a gentle push, and she's utterly terrified. The same must be true for Xingkong and Qingbi; their hearts are undoubtedly gripped with fear."

What kind of resolve must they have mustered to leap so resolutely?

"Bai Dagon, do not presume that just because our master is absent, and Xianyue has been wounded, you can take advantage of her. Blood debts must be repaid; your lady has caused the deaths of so many. Even if she had a hundred lives, it wouldn't suffice. Our queen has shown restraint, not avenging herself on the entire Bai Chu, and has granted you considerable leniency. Do not underestimate the power of our Lan Kingdom."

Though Xianyue said nothing, Lei An, despite not being particularly astute, had been by Lan Yixuan's side for many years and had a rough understanding of the situation. This venomous woman had the audacity to harm Lady Xianyue; she deserved to be torn to shreds. The bond between Xianyue and Bai Pingting had been so profound; how could she possibly bear such a sudden loss? This vile woman's audacity was unforgivable.

Xianyue nodded with a smile, her eyes reddening further. "Yes, have all our people from Fengguo met their end?"

Bai Zhanfeng remained silent, his gaze fixed on Xianyue. He was acutely aware of the formidable power behind her. To pit Bai Chu against her would be akin to shattering eggs against a stone—futile and self-destructive. Yet, that woman was his wife, and she carried his child; her actions were primarily a consequence of his own choices. How could he stand idly by?

Indeed, it was responsibility that had dulled his righteous spirit.

But now, beyond this responsibility, what else did he have? Without Xianyue, was he still alive solely for the sake of the Bai family and the old master?

"Your Majesty."

Suddenly, Bai Ao knelt before Xianyue, presenting her with a white jade tablet inscribed with a tiger motif. "In time, our Bai family cannot escape the fate of servitude, but I believe without a doubt that the ruler of this world shall be the Lan Kingdom."

His once sharp eyes had lost their luster, and Bai Ao's face was filled with despair, aged by a decade in an instant. "This is the emblem of the Bai family's ancestral heads."

"Old Master."

Bai Ao raised his gaze, cold determination passing over his countenance as he glared at Chen Ruoxi. "Be silent."

"Over two hundred lives traded for a single Bai Chu—Your Majesty, that is no loss."

"Indeed, it is no loss."

Xianyue smiled faintly, accepting the jade tablet from Bai Ao. "This treasure is destined to be mine; I accept it in advance."

Her sword remained poised at Chen Ruoxi's throat. "And the key to your family's treasury should also be surrendered."

"Feng Xianyue, do not overstep your bounds."

Xianyue said nothing, her hand slightly shifting, causing crimson to flow from Chen Ruoxi's pale neck. Xianyue smiled and raised an eyebrow at Bai Zhanfeng. "Blades have no eyes."

"This was always yours."

Bai Zhanfeng retrieved the treasury key from his bosom and handed it to Xianyue. "This was always meant for you."

Even though he was now wed to Chen Ruoxi and she carried a child of the Bai family, he had never contemplated relinquishing it to her. This belonged to Xianyue; having already given it away, it was hers, regardless of her wishes.

Xianyue's cold smile returned, gesturing to the woman in green. "This was exchanged for the lives of over two hundred young souls."

Bai Zhanfeng forced a smile, one more wretched than tears, his heart heavy. He glanced at Xianyue's sword. "Let her go."

This was his duty as a husband.

Xianyue raised her chin, studying the jade tablet in her hand, and chuckled. "The Bai army is not suited to take over. I will clarify everything to Bai Chu and the world at large; at that time, I hope the old master and young master Bai can attest to this. They will understand this is my due."

Upon hearing this, Chen Ruoxi was overtaken by dread at the thought of being condemned by all. She gritted her teeth. "Feng Xianyue, you are overreaching."

"Get out. Leave before I change my mind, and do not let me see you again. I can't guarantee that next time, my sword won't find another target."

With a soft sigh, Xianyue wielded her sword, leaving the onlookers dizzy, the piercing screams resonating through the valley. Her raven tresses flew as they cascaded into her grasp.

Chen Ruoxi clutched her face, feeling the remnants of her severed hair, as she was forcibly pulled away by Bai Zhanfeng.

"Our ties are severed, Bai Dagon; we owe each other nothing."

Bai Zhanfeng halted, tightening his grip on Chen Ruoxi's hand, his back straight as a rod, responding with a heavy, despairing acknowledgment. Their meeting now felt utterly devoid of qualification.

After everything that had transpired, even a simple meeting was beyond his reach.

Just moments ago, he thought his heart had turned to stone, feeling like a mere husk, as if he were dead. Yet now, an ache surged within him, as though something tightened around his chest, robbing him of the strength to walk. The world spun around him, and he braced himself against the wall to keep from collapsing.

"Young Master!"

Chen Ruoxi was taken aback by the sight of Bai Zhanfeng's pale countenance, and as she moved to approach him, he ruthlessly brushed her aside. Bai Zhanfeng, forcing himself to remain composed, fixed his deep-set gaze on Chen Ruoxi's tear-streaked face, filled with panic and dread, devoid of any compassion—his was a hatred colder than despair.

In that moment, she felt a profound sense of regret.

Everything she had done not only failed to bring her the desired outcome, but had also pushed Bai Zhanfeng further away from her. He would never look at her again.

"Chen Ruoxi, you are no longer my wife. As for this child, whether you choose to bear it is your own decision; once the child is born, you will immediately leave the Bai family."

His greatest regret was not that day on the cliff when he had let go of Xuan Yue's hand, but rather marrying a woman like her.

"No, I don't want that. My lord, I truly realize my mistakes."

As Chen Ruoxi watched Bai Zhanfeng turn his back and walk away, she chased after him, yet no matter how hard she tried, she could not catch up. Stupidly, she stood rooted in place, unwilling to part with this child. It was all she had left; how could he take away her only glimmer of hope? She would go mad—she would surely go mad. And what of her grandfather and the Chen family? If they knew everything, would they still accept her? Everyone would come to loathe and disdain her. She would go mad—she would absolutely go mad. It would be better to end it all than to live through this.

Chen Ruoxi's emotions were a tangled mess as she looked at Bai Ao passing by, clutching his hand tightly. "Old master, you must help me. I will take care of the Bai family from now on."

Bai Ao glanced at Chen Ruoxi, his once piercing gaze now vacant and hollow. He had lost all strength; he was utterly exhausted, and his attempts to compensate for Feng'er had only driven him into a bottomless abyss.

He pushed her hand away. "What use is there for you now that the Bai family is lost? My greatest regret in life is allowing Feng'er to marry you."

If it weren't for his unilateral decision, none of this would have happened. He had been blind.

"You all heard it; the Bai family rightfully belongs to me."

Xuan Yue's voice rang out, commanding attention. The generals of the Chu Kingdom, who had been lurking in the shadows, emerged, regarding Xuan Yue with a mixture of pride and isolation. Surely, she had done nothing wrong.

"Will you blame me?"

Xuan Yue gazed at the sheer cliff, collapsing to the ground in despair, her sobs breaking the silence.

"Princess."

Everyone knelt down, tears streaming from their eyes.

"Green Attire, I detest war as well. If there were battles, countless would suffer as Moon Shadow and the others have, even if they crossed paths with someone like me, misfortune would still prevail. Wouldn't it be better for the world to attain peace sooner?"

If only that were true, no one would be separated from their homes, no child would be lost from their parents, and those who were meant to be unfortunate could find happiness.

"Do not follow me anymore. Go pursue what you wish to do; live solely for yourself."

No longer should she be so foolish as to sacrifice herself with a smile for her; she could not bear it.

The night had grown deep, and the once-boisterous military camp was now eerily quiet, the only sound being the crackling of the bonfire.

Inside the tent, flickering candles cast dim light, illuminating a slender figure seated at the desk, her back straight yet rigid, frail enough to elicit sympathy.

"Your Highness, this is from His Majesty for you."

In the stillness of the night, a shadow silently approached Xuan Yue, kneeling on one knee with a letter in hand.

"Give it to me."

The man on the ground offered the letter before quietly departing.

Xuan Yue opened the envelope and unfolded the paper, recognizing the elegant script, each stroke imbued with nobility.

A chilly breeze swept the letter from her grasp, allowing it to fall to the ground, much like her heart plummeting into despair. Although it was already June, the wind felt frigid against her skin, sending shivers down her spine.

Xuan Yue rushed to the bed, wrapping herself tightly in the quilt, leaning against it as she curled into a ball, yet she could not quell the chilling dread that seeped from her heart, shaking her to the core.

"Princess."

Green Attire lifted the curtain and entered, spotting Xuan Yue huddled on the bed. The soft glow of the candlelight illuminated her face, pale and translucent, her eyes reflecting an icy despair.

"Princess."

The wind from outside followed her in, swirling the white paper on the ground. Green Attire knelt to retrieve it, and as she read the contents, her spine stiffened in shock.

Paper could never contain fire; she had desperately tried to conceal it, hoping not to add further sorrow at this time, yet this news had reached the princess at her most sorrowful moment.

"You knew all along?"

Green Attire felt a pang of hurt but found herself at a loss for words.

"At that time, the princess suffered a devastating blow, barely escaping with her life. I feared she would be unable to bear the weight of it all, so I discreetly concealed the truth."

Green Attire picked up the fallen note and approached Xuan Yue, kneeling on one knee. "I am to blame, please punish me, Your Highness."

Xuan Yue released the tightly wrapped quilt that shrouded her, her expression vacant, resembling a lost child. Despite the profound anguish in her heart and her desire to weep freely, the tears simply would not come. It seemed that when sorrow reaches its peak, the heart can no longer cry; or perhaps, had her tears truly run dry?

"Green Attire, why do you not leave? Was it not said that you should pursue what you desire? Go on, I am weary."

Whether in life or death, she yearned for solitude, for silence.

With a sigh, Xuan Yue leaped from the bed, hastily arranging her garments. Green Attire remained kneeling, not rising. "Your Highness, the Young Lady of Xuanyuan wishes to see you; she awaits outside."

Her greatest wish was to stay by the princess's side, just as Yueying and the others had done. With their absence, it was even more imperative for her to care for the princess, especially in her current state; who could possibly feel at ease?

"After several years apart, the Young Lady of Xuanyuan remains as radiant and noble as ever."

As stunning as on their first meeting, even clad in plain attire, her elegance could not be concealed. Her chin was held high, though her bright, noble eyes now bore the weight of experience.

Xuan Yue gazed at Ning Yunyan, surprised.

What was the Young Lady of Xuanyuan doing here, so far from the Xuanyuan palace?

"When did you, Miss Xuan Yue, begin to utter such insincerely flattering words?"

"The Young Lady of Xuanyuan is too modest; I speak only the truth."

Xuan Yue rose from her seat, casually propping her legs up on the table, scrutinizing Ning Yunyan with a smirk that danced on the edge of a smile.

For someone to visit at such a late hour, especially someone of her stature, it must be of considerable importance.

Her sorrow and suffering were never to be revealed to outsiders, particularly not to the astute and proud Young Lady of Xuanyuan.

Ning Yunyan, perceiving Xuan Yue's nonchalant demeanor, clenched her teeth, yet maintained a composed smile. She lifted her long skirt and knelt before Xuan Yue.

Xuan Yue leaned down, astonished. Though she had spent a few days with Ning Yunyan, their time was brief, yet she had grasped her temperament well enough to understand that such an arrogant woman would not easily kneel before anyone.

"What is the meaning of this? Rise, I implore you."

Xuan Yue jumped down from the table, extending her hand to assist Ning Yunyan. "We are both princesses, both Young Ladies; I cannot accept this."

Ning Yunyan grasped Xuan Yue's hand and looked up at her. "Your Highness, you are as astute as ever; surely you know the purpose of my visit today?"

Xuan Yue chuckled softly, releasing her hand and returning to her seat, tacitly acknowledging her words. "I am unaware; is it not power and prestige that matters most to you, Lady Yunyan? At this moment, instead of contending for such things in Xuanyuan, why come here? I wonder what could lead one as proud as you to forgo your dignity and kneel willingly? What reason could you possibly have to forgive someone who has harmed my companions?"

Everyone knelt before her, beseeching her forgiveness, but no matter their actions, those lost would never return.

What good is kneeling? If it could bring them back, she would have knelt on Wind Chasing Cliff for three days and nights, but alas, no matter what she did, those smiles would remain forever out of reach.

Ning Yunyan fixed her gaze on Xuan Yue, suddenly breaking into laughter. "Isn't this what you once said yourself: 'It is lonely at the top'? The Young Master stands in Xuanyuan, adored by the people and supported by the officials; wherever I go as his Young Lady, it is as if I am surrounded by stars, free from the fears of national ruin and loss of status. Yet, remaining in such lofty heights for too long, one grows accustomed to flattery and sycophancy, and eventually begins to despise it, feeling isolated and cold. The only source of hope and warmth I have is the Young Master. As you mentioned, wealth and power are but fleeting illusions. News of the Young Master being trapped in Baichu has spread like wildfire in Xuanyuan, and he is not there; the atmosphere in Xuanyuan is one of unrest. People are restless, worried for their sons and husbands, and incited by others; the Young Master has become the target of their ire. Isn't all of this what you orchestrated?"

The greatest regret of the Young Master should not be in failing to seize the world, but in having chosen the wrong partner. Had he married the princess of Fengguo, would he not be untroubled by his current predicament? Instead, he is treated like a rat fleeing from the street, having lost the authority he built over the years in Xuanyuan.

"Did not Sister Yunyan know this all along?"

"Those around you may be sincere, but there will always be false sentiments as well. This world has no permanent enemies or friends; it is merely interests that bind us together."

Ning Yunyan rose and approached Xuan Yue, letting out a sigh. "Consider this a plea from me: spare the Young Master. Xuanyuan is in chaos, and with your support, the Third Prince and his allies are gaining ground. The Young Master has already lost the people's hearts; even if he rushed back now, it would be too late. Why push for total annihilation? I have heard rumors about those involved; did we not also suffer significant losses in Xuanyuan? It is all for our respective purposes. Were the same to happen to you, you would act likewise. In war, casualties are inevitable, but should we execute the commander, the war could be avoided. Had it not been for you, the Young Master would not have left Xuanyuan, and if he had remained, how could your plans have proceeded so smoothly?"

"Lady Consort, you may have a point, but does that alone compel me to release Xuanyuan Hao? The Xuanyuan heir harbors great ambition; if he has captured your heart, his intellect and strategic acumen are certainly formidable. If I were to allow a tiger to return to the mountain, would I not be inviting endless troubles upon myself?"

Xuan Yue fixed her gaze upon Ning Yunyan, a fleeting glimmer of murderous intent passing through her eyes, though Ning Yunyan managed to capture it.

"Yunyan remembers that I owe the Queen a condition; those lives cannot be taken unjustly. I will ensure the third matter is handled properly, and if the Queen is satisfied, then release the heir."

Ning Yunyan knelt briefly before rising gracefully, turning to depart.

In June, Ying City was unlike the Chu Kingdom, perpetually shrouded in rain; here, the seasons were predominantly filled with sunshine.

Yet the palace was desolate, the gentle breeze chilling the heart as if it threatened to freeze.

Before even entering the city gates, she caught sight of a familiar purple figure, with a warm smile that resembled jade.

"Lan Yi Xuan, is that you?"

Her voice, though light, carried an ineffable weariness; she had ridden tirelessly for days without rest. Despite her fatigued tone, her senses felt numb, as if her very being had become a cold machine, devoid of a heart.

"Yes."

Lan Yi Xuan approached Xuan Yue, gently tousling her hair and pulling her into an embrace. Leaning against his shoulder, Xuan Yue closed her eyes and whispered, "Where is Brother?"

After a moment of silence, Lan Yi Xuan softly stroked her hair, "I regret having told you."

Had he foreseen the events in Chasing Wind Valley, he would have done everything in his power to keep it from her. Feng Jiulan was of such importance to her; merely the news of his misfortune was enough for her to bear. Not to mention the fate of Bai Pingting and the others—she was so delicate, like shattered glass. What could he do?

"Xue Sang Hall."

Xuan Yue responded softly, clenching her fist as her slender nails cut into her palm, drawing blood, yet she felt no physical pain. The agony within her heart was boundless, and it felt as though her very chest was splitting apart.

Lan Yi Xuan expected her to erupt in madness, pushing him away or striking him in despair. Instead, she simply distanced herself and said, "Take me to see him."

Her clear eyes glinted like ancient ice, her expression serene and indifferent, as if all beings and objects in this world had drifted far from her.

Such a demeanor only heightened their concerns; as she parted her lips, every word felt woefully inadequate.

Outside Xue Sang Hall, in white and gray robes, officials knelt en masse, surprised to see Xuan Yue, and they rose in unison, reverently addressing her: "Your Majesty."

Their mournful tones hinted at lingering worry.

Xuan Yue glanced at them, resembling a soulless puppet, her pallid smile devoid of warmth, as she nodded woodenly.

"Your Majesty."

Within the courtyard of Xue Sang Hall, court officials knelt, their faces etched with sorrow, genuinely grieving for the compassionate and benevolent crown prince.

The bond between the prince and the queen was profound; how could she possibly endure such relentless blows?

The royal line of Feng Kingdom was fragile, especially in Xuan Yue's generation, comprising only her and Feng Jiulan. In contrast to the throngs outside, the hall felt sparsely populated, mainly consisting of loyal ministers and those who had attended to Feng Jiulan in life.

"Your Majesty."

Upon spotting Xuan Yue, Yun Qinghen's surprise quickly morphed into understanding as she noticed Lan Yi Xuan behind her.

"Brother, I have returned to see you."

The purple-golden coffin was now closed, and Xuan Yue reached out, gently caressing the exquisite carvings. Her tender touch reflected the affection for their dearly departed prince, their beloved king's closest brother.

"How could you bear to leave me?"

Xuan Yue circled the stone coffin, her strength evaporating, and she collapsed to the ground.

"Your Majesty."

Yun Qinghen moved to approach her, but Lan Yi Xuan stopped her: "Let her be."

If these actions were forbidden, how could she possibly release the torment she had long suppressed?

Sitting vacantly on the ground, Xuan Yue stared at the coffin above her, "You're gone. What meaning is left for me in this world? After enduring so much suffering and sacrificing countless lives, it feels utterly meaningless—truly devoid of significance. Everyone has departed, leaving only me, all alone."

"Only me, all alone."

Xuan Yue sat on the ground, repeating those final words. Lan Yi Xuan knelt beside her silently, saying nothing, merely gazing at the coffin in a daze.

Between the two of them, she had always chosen him.

He had left, yet she still had him, though she felt entirely alone.

The pain in her heart, her wounds, only he could mend.

"Your Majesty, the dead cannot be revived; please grieve in moderation."

Bai Shou stepped forward, kneeling behind Xian Yue, and wept as he implored,

"Your Majesty, please take heart."

The others followed suit, bowing deeply in agreement. Their gestures were not mere flattery but stemmed from genuine sincerity.

The young sovereign, a paragon of talent, surpassed even the founding emperor of the Feng Kingdom. Under his governance, the court was tranquil, and the people thrived in peace, a blessing they would not have enjoyed had it not been for him, for they would have faced the same turmoil as the nations of Yan and Chu.

"Bai Daren,"

Xian Yue turned to face Bai Shou, kneeling before him. "I am deeply sorry."

Bai Shou knew all too well what Xian Yue referred to—the battle at Chasing Wind Valley was already known to him.

"I am filled with trepidation,"

he replied, his voice choked with emotion and tears streaming down his face. "As a loyal subject, Ping Ting's actions were befitting of her station, so do not blame yourself, for it was her fortune."

The Bai family's gallantry was not diminished by Ping Ting's choice; rather, he felt proud of his clever and wise granddaughter.

Who among us can escape death? To pass away with dignity is to have lived meaningfully.

"Qing Hen, open the coffin."

"Your Majesty,"

Yun Qing Hen knelt before Xian Yue, hesitant and troubled.

"I will do it myself."

Xian Yue rose, but was embraced by Yun Qing Hen, who pleaded, "Your Majesty, forgive my insolence, but His Highness repeatedly instructed that you should not witness his final appearance nor accompany him on his last journey."

"Yue Er, the departed are gone. Since it was your brother's wish, do not make things difficult for Commander Yun."

Xian Yue knew that seeing Feng Jiu Lan in such a state would only deepen her sorrow.

Looking at Lan Yi Xuan, her hands tightened around the coffin's edges before gradually loosening their grip.

"This is the last token left by Sister Ping Ting. Let my brother hold onto it, so they may accompany each other on the road to the underworld."

Xian Yue retrieved the jade pendant and the golden hairpin entwined in her hair. "Bound by marriage, their love unwavering; they were unable to be together in life, but now they need not hold back."

Yun Qing Hen carefully accepted the items, nodding in acknowledgment.

"Release the maids from Xinyang Palace. My brother is kind and benevolent; he would not wish to implicate the innocent. One Ping Ting is sufficient. From this day forth, the eldest daughter of the Bai family shall become the crown princess of our Feng Kingdom. I entrust this matter to you, Bai Daren."

Upon hearing this, Bai Shou was overwhelmed with joy, weeping tears of gratitude as he bowed repeatedly.

"She was a dreamer, longing throughout her life. In death, she finally achieves her wish. I thank Your Majesty on behalf of Ping Ting."

Xian Yue nodded; she was indeed a dreamer. Had she lived, she would have followed her brother in life or death.

If they could not be together in life, then sharing the same grave would fulfill her lifelong desire.

"Since it is your brother's wish, I shall not oppose it. Qing Hen, I leave this to you."

Her figure turned away, solitary and resolute.

He was the closest person in her life, yet she did not look back, as if her soul had already detached from her body, becoming mechanical and numb.

She felt devoid of heart, as the pain had seeped into her very being, becoming inseparable from her existence.

"Yue Er,"

Lan Yi Xuan followed behind her, unsure of what to say. He yearned to pull her close, to comfort her and encourage her to cry her heart out; such thoughts surged strongly within him.

"Lan Gongzi,"

Xian Yue turned around, gently clearing her throat. A thick, viscous liquid began to ooze from the corner of her mouth. She felt as if she might shatter from the pain.

The glaring sun blinded her, intensifying the agony in her throbbing eyes. The world spun around her, and as the blinding light faded, darkness enveloped her, plunging her into an abyss more terrifying than the Valley of Death.

"Yue Er!"

Lan Yi Xuan exclaimed, catching her in his arms. "Summon the royal physician!"

She truly felt exhausted, an unparalleled fatigue that left her without a foundation to lean upon.

As he gazed upon Xian Yue, her pale, wan face evoked memories of the spirited woman she once was, filling him with sorrow; his heart felt as though it were being tightly twisted, leaving him breathless.

"Lan Yi Xuan, cough—"

Xian Yue gasped, crimson blood erupting forth, staining her white garments. Under the sunlight, her purple attire turned to a dark violet.

"Do not speak, Yue Er. I am still by your side, for all eternity, unwavering."

Xian Yue managed a faint smile, her bloodied lips only deepening her pallor. Lan Yi Xuan's heart constricted; in that moment, he felt an unbearable suffocation.

The physician arrived to check her pulse, sighing, "This ailment can be both easily and difficultly treated."

"From the pulse, the sovereign is weak and depleted, burdened by grief. With excessive fatigue and sorrow, how can she bear such a blow? Only the Crown Prince can console her now. If the sovereign can ease her mind and rest, she will soon recover. I shall procure some calming medicines at once."

Lan Yi Xuan nodded, gazing at Xuan Yue, who lay pallid upon the bed, feeling an unfamiliar lack of confidence.

"Please, go with the physician."

"Yes."

All the palace maids and eunuchs departed, leaving only Lan Yi Xuan and Xuan Yue in the chamber.

He sat beside her, grasping her hand. "Why is it so cold?"

He tightly enveloped her hand with his own and then pressed it against his cheek. "Is it any better?"

He whispered, but the figure on the bed remained still, unresponsive.

"Xuan Yue, I will not leave you alone."

She still had him, yet he was not the one she yearned for most, was he?

After speaking, Lan Yi Xuan tucked her hand beneath the covers. "I know you're awake. I'll be just outside; call if you need anything."

As he rose, Xuan Yue grasped his hand. "Why tell me this?"

"I don't want you to regret it for the rest of your life."

A soft laugh escaped Xuan Yue, but her tears, previously frozen, began to flow. "What difference does it make to return? I still cannot see him for the last time or accompany him on his final journey."

"Yue Ying, Green Pearl, Sister Ping Ting, Ya Er, now Brother, and Lan Gongzi—so many have vanished entirely from my life. During the day, my heart aches, but I cannot voice it, nor can I weep. It feels as though I am no longer myself, like a soulless doll. I wish I could be a doll, devoid of a heart, unable to feel pain or sorrow. My heart is hollow; it feels not like heartbreak, but rather a numbing emptiness, as if I am losing my very essence. No matter how hard I try, I cannot piece myself back together."

Xuan Yue closed her eyes, tears trickling down her cheeks, soaking her pillow. "But don't you still have memories? All the beautiful moments in your life were gifts from your brother. Focus on those things that brought you joy."

Lan Yi Xuan knelt beside her, trying to wipe away the traces of her tears, but they seemed endless.

"Lan Gongzi."

Xuan Yue covered her face with his hand, sobbing helplessly like a child abandoned by the world. "What should I do, Lan Gongzi? Those memories no longer bring me happiness. It feels like I can hardly breathe."

Even the beautiful memories, when recalled, felt cold and pale, causing her heart to ache profoundly.

"Feng Xuan Yue, your life is not solely your own."

If he could not keep her here, what of responsibility and duty?

Xuan Yue murmured in acknowledgment, wiping her tears away as she pulled the covers over her head. "Lan Gongzi, I wish to be alone for a while."

"This is what your brother entrusted to me."

Lan Yi Xuan placed the letter on the covers and departed.

The chamber fell into silence as Xuan Yue uncovered herself, noticing the letter on the floor. She reached down and picked it up, sitting on the bed, hesitating for a long while before unfolding it.

"I wish to be a tree, a pristine pear tree untouched by dust, with a tall and sturdy trunk, vibrant and lively leaves, and pure petals. I want to root myself firmly in Feng Guo, shielding my Xuan Yue from the wind and rain. Even after a hundred years, I will remain here, silently guarding my Xuan Yue, never to leave."

"Does my brother have any wishes?"

"I wish to be a tree."

"A tree? Why?"

"A tall and sturdy trunk, vibrant and lively leaves, firmly rooted in Feng Guo, shielding my Xuan Yue from the wind and rain. Even after a hundred years, I will remain here, silently guarding my Xuan Yue, never to leave."

"Then I will be the wind, carrying my brother's leaves wherever I go."

"When I see the blooming pear blossoms on Li Hua Mountain, I always think of my brother, pure and unstained, free from dust. I hope my brother remains this way, forever clean and warm like the sun, and not to suffer because of my bloody hands. I will bear those burdens alone."

"Brother."

The white xuan paper, soaked with tears, mingled with the black ink.

"Lan Wang is an extraordinary man in this world; I favor him in Pan City. I am just uncertain of his intentions, fearing you may be taken advantage of. I can see that he is genuinely devoted to you, Xuan Yue. You can trust him to care for you well. I am at peace knowing my Xuan Yue is a unique woman, deserving of any man's heartfelt devotion. My wish for you, Xuan Yue, is to be the simplest person, leading the most ordinary life. Henceforth, focus solely on yourself and live the life you desire."

"How is the Wang Shang?"

Feng Jiu Lan's coffin had been interred in the imperial tomb, and Yun Qing Hen had just returned to Xue Sang Hall.

"She eats and sleeps as usual."

Lan Yi Xuan poured a cup of tea and handed it to the breathless Yun Qing Hen.

"She didn't cry or make a fuss?"

Lan Yi Xuan shook his head.

"Impossible."

Yun Qing Hen gasped in alarm, but Lan Yi Xuan merely smiled, remaining silent, which only heightened her concern.

"I shall go check on the king."

With unease, Yun Qing Hen set down her empty teacup and prepared to seek Xuan Yue.

"Let her be; she needs some time to herself."

Lan Yi Xuan raised his teacup, the delicate aroma wafting pleasantly. He chuckled lightly. "At this moment, how could Feng Xuan Yue be crying incessantly? I will handle matters here."

As evening descended, the sky darkened, thick with oppressive heat. In the distance, the clouds churned ominously, a dense black mass swirling above. A fierce wind roared, tossing the flowers and grass in the garden, while thunder and lightning flashed relentlessly.

"It's going to rain."

Lan Yi Xuan approached the bedside, his purple robe billowing as he moved. He looked up at the gathering storm clouds, leaning slightly to glance at the adjacent room, its door firmly shut.

Xuan Yue lay on the bed, the windows on either side flung wide open, banging against the frames. The candles that had once flickered were now extinguished by the wind. In the dark night, devoid of stars or moonlight, the room was cloaked in an inky blackness, filled only with the howling wind.

As the wind ceased momentarily, the rumble of thunder persisted, and suddenly, a torrential downpour began, the rain hammering down from the eaves and splattering onto the ground. Xuan Yue gazed out at the pear tree, its blossoms now fallen, feeling lightheaded as she gradually succumbed to slumber.

"Yue Er."

"Yue Er, your brother has come to see you."

"Do not fear, do not fear; your brother is here with you."

In her ears was a gentle, familiar voice, standing at her bedside, lips curved in a smile as he looked at her with affection.

"Come into my embrace."

"Brother, brother."

Xuan Yue beamed with joy, leaping to Feng Jiu Lan's side, eager to nestle into his arms, but the figure beside her suddenly vanished.

A frown marred Xuan Yue's brow as cold beads of sweat trickled from her forehead, her small face pale and almost translucent.

"Brother!"

"Brother!"

Xuan Yue called out, jolting awake from her dream, yet she remained dazed. Outside the window, shadows of branches flickered ominously, ghostlike in their movement.

"Yue Er."

"Yue Er."

Xuan Yue, drawn to the blurred silhouette, rushed outside.

The outside world was engulfed in a fierce wind and pouring rain. Clad only in a thin garment, Xuan Yue dashed into the corridor, but the shadow she pursued abruptly vanished.

"Brother!"

She shouted, suddenly sprinting toward the stable.

Lan Yi Xuan, concerned for Xuan Yue, had been unable to sleep. Upon hearing her cries, he hurried outside and found her standing in the corridor in her flimsy inner garment. He rushed back to his room, grabbed a cloak, and pushed the door open to chase after her, but the corridor was empty—Xuan Yue was nowhere to be seen.

"Yue Er."

"Yue Er."

The palace servants were awakened, hastily donning their clothes and rushing out to search.

"I have already dispatched the guards to look for her. How could the king simply vanish?"

Hearing of Xuan Yue's disappearance, Yun Qing Hen from Xinyang Hall rushed over, initially intending to voice her grievances. But upon seeing Lan Yi Xuan drenched, his hair disheveled and looking frantic, she was momentarily at a loss for words. In her current state, even with Lan Wang by her side, how could they ensure her safety?

"My lord, the guards have just reported that they saw the king leave on horseback."

"In which direction did he go?"

"They have been sent to inquire with the guards at the city gate. We should have results soon."

The guard himself was soaked through, resembling a drenched chicken.

"He left on horseback?"

Lan Yi Xuan muttered to himself, "Prepare a horse for me."

He pointed at the guard before turning to Yun Qing Hen, saying, "You wait here for news; I shall go after her."

Day turned into night, and then back to night again, yet the incessant rain continued to fall.

Xuan Yue sat astride her horse, having traveled for a day and night, utterly exhausted. She was in a daze, burning with fever, her clothes clinging to her skin as if they were aflame. Driven solely by her indomitable will, she pressed on to the royal tomb to see Feng Jiu Lan one last time.

Though she could not bear to part with him forever, her heart ached with the desire to remain by his side.

"Brother, do you know? I feel so desolate. I do not want a cold, lifeless pear tree; what I long for is the warmth that only you can provide.

You must be eager to see me; hear me call you 'brother' once more. Green Pearl and the others are gone, leaving the royal tomb's back mountain empty. You must be so lonely amidst the flowers and trees. When I caught sight of that familiar, unassuming grave in the distance, a sigh of relief escaped me.

I dismounted from my horse; after two days and nights without food or water, my wound had reopened, soaking my clothes in blood. Wearied from running, I felt utterly drained, and before I could steady myself, I collapsed to the ground.

I have never felt so frail and helpless as I do now.

"Brother, I have come to see you!"

"Why did you deceive me? Did you not promise to take care of me and shield me from harm? You vowed to protect me for a lifetime; why did you leave me so soon? You were meant to push me on the swing, to lull me to sleep at night, to sit with me on the roof during summer and watch the stars. I endured hardships for over a decade for you, yet you only did those things for me for four short years. It is not fair."

The rain continued to pour, the dark night sky shrouded in a chilling wind that wailed like a specter. Yet, fear eluded her as she tilted her head back, letting the rain drench her. She could no longer discern whether the cold droplets were rain or tears.

"My warmth in this life is limited; it is only you, dear brother. Why must you leave me? Is it because I am now with Lan Yi Xuan that you must abandon me? Then fine, I will cast him aside. I will stay with you, always by your side. Please, brother, wake up! Feng Jiu Lan, please return to me!"

In the stillness of the night, in the vast, empty valley, only her frantic cries echoed, mingling with the relentless sound of the falling rain, composing a mournful melody.

The rain had fallen for two days and nights, turning the road into a treacherous mess of puddles, each step leading her closer to the royal tomb.

"Brother, I feel so wretched, nearly driven to madness."

So many burdens weighed heavily upon her, even breathing was agony.

She sniffled, rising on her tiptoes to unlock the tomb's mechanism, only to feel a sharp pain at the back of her head, causing her to lose consciousness.

"Xuan Yue."

Clad in white, she blended into the darkness of the night. The once gentle and handsome eyes were now filled with the weight of sorrow and regret. Jun Pin Yu gently lifted Xuan Yue's form, cradling her in his embrace, wiping her tears with his fingers and bringing them to his lips with a smile. "Indeed, they are bitter."

He brushed the tears from her face. "Xuan Yue, I am sorry. I only wish for your well-being. You are far more capable than Xuanyuan Hao; you shall surely become a wise queen, bringing peace and prosperity to the people. I will revive Feng Jiu Lan; we will see you happy."

As he spoke, Jun Pin Yu retrieved a small vial from his robe, biting it open and placing it near her ear. "This is all I can do for you."

As soon as he finished speaking, a dark green insect crawled out of the vial and slowly made its way into Xuan Yue's ear, while a fat, blood-red creature wriggled out on the other side.

"Yue Er!"

"Yue Er!"

Startled, Jun Pin Yu gently laid Xuan Yue on the ground and stroked her face. "Forget your worries; this is what I owe you. Xuan Yue, you must find happiness."

"Who's there?"

With rain splashing and mist swirling, Lan Yi Xuan was the first to notice the white figure, his heart jolting in surprise as he leapt from his horse. "Jun Pin Yu, what have you done to Yue Er?"

Lan Yi Xuan dashed a few steps before catching sight of Xuan Yue, lying in the mud, soaked and covered in filth, prompting him to step back in alarm.

"She will awaken in ten days."

Lan Yi Xuan scooped Xuan Yue into his arms and pursued Jun Pin Yu. "What do you mean?"

The only response was the steady patter of the rain.

"Yue Er."

"What is wrong, Yue Er?"

Lan Yi Xuan stared at Xuan Yue's pale face, streaked with blood, his heart racing. He vaulted onto his horse. "I will take you home immediately."

Lan Yi Xuan gazed at the serene figure resting on the bed, now dressed in clean garments, treated with medicine brewed by the royal physician. Compared to that day, her complexion had improved significantly, yet after ten days, she showed no signs of waking.

"Yue Er."

"Yue Er."

He softly called the name of the person in his arms, yearning to pry open her tightly closed eyelids. He had never realized how limited his patience truly was; within less than ten days, it had been utterly exhausted. What had Jun Pinyu done to her? Was it truly, as Feng Jiulan had said, for her own good? Ten days had passed, yet she still remained unresponsive.

A terror unlike any he had ever felt ensnared him like a creeping vine, paralyzing him with fear and helplessness. He feared that the person in his embrace might never again open those bright eyes, and he trembled at the thought of what horrors might befall her should she awaken.

"Lan Yixuan loves Feng Xianyue dearly, with all his heart."

Feng Jiulan lowered his head and pressed his lips against hers. The warmth, though faint, brought him solace.

"Hmm."

Lan Yixuan leaned over her, only to hear a soft moan followed by a sharp cry. Suddenly, he was pushed away, and Feng Xianyue clutched her chest, her pale, delicate face contorting in pain. "It hurts."

Overcome with joy, he momentarily lost his senses, realizing her discomfort only when he saw her frown in agony. Elation surged through him as he rushed to embrace her. "You've finally awakened."

"Let go."

The pressure on her wound intensified the pain.

"I won't."

Lan Yixuan acted like a petulant child.

"Why are you kissing and hugging me, taking advantage of me? Are you trying to provoke me?"

Without a moment's thought, she bit down hard on his shoulder with her sharp teeth.

To his surprise, the pain only elicited a laugh from him; this familiar sting felt achingly real.

"Yue'er, Yue'er."

Excitedly, Lan Yixuan called her name, but she pushed him away, her expression bewildered. "Who are you? Why are you calling me so affectionately? Let go, I can hardly breathe."

Lan Yixuan released her, gazing intently into her eyes. They were clear and bright, devoid of any lingering pain, yet there was no hint of love for him.

Feng Xianyue stared at the disheveled figure in purple robes, his face unshaven. The sight of his tears struck her, prompting her to frown in disbelief. "How can a grown man cry?"

Seeing him weep stirred a strange ache in her heart. Turning her gaze to the window, she noticed the pear tree shedding its blossoms. She sniffled, overcome by an inexplicable urge to cry.

Lan Yixuan paused, suddenly realizing the implications of Jun Pinyu's actions. Grasping Feng Xianyue's hand, he declared, "I am the King of Lan, and you are my queen, the one and only. Together, we shall grow old. Feng Xianyue, regardless of whether you remember me, you will always be my woman. I will never let go of your hand for all eternity."

**Postscript:**

In the twenty-first year of the Qian Ning era, on the seventh month, the state of Bai Chu pledged allegiance to the Lan Kingdom. By the end of the month, the Lan Kingdom dispatched troops to the Chu royal family, garnering strong support from the subjects under the rule of the Chu King. The Chu state, already weak, suffered defeat after defeat, and by August, they submitted a letter of surrender. In September, Yan Kingdom also submitted, becoming a vassal of Lan.

In the same year, chaos engulfed the Xuanyuan family. The Qingliu faction and officials led by Wang Hongming petitioned for the punishment of Xuanyuan Jiu. Consort Lian wholeheartedly defended her son, while the third prince Xuanyuan Heng allied with several ministers to oppose Xuanyuan Hao's tyranny, demanding the return of power to Xuanyuan Wang. The situation was tumultuous. In August, Xuanyuan He returned to the capital and relinquished his power. By early October, the Wujidian, where Xuanyuan He resided, mysteriously caught fire, burning for three days and nights, ultimately being destroyed. Xuanyuan Hao disappeared, with rumors suggesting he was either perished in the flames or had fled to gather strength, biding his time for a resurgence.

In mid-October of that same year, the Zhou royal family submitted to the Lan Kingdom, willing to serve as subjects, marking the end of their rule spanning over three hundred years.

On the third day of the eleventh month, the King of Lan accepted the Zhou royal family's plea at Wang Jiang Tai in Lan Kingdom, becoming the new sovereign with the support of the populace. That year, on the Laba Festival, the era name was changed to "Jianxin," and the kingdom was renamed "Lan," henceforth known as the Ruidi Emperor.

The Ruidi Emperor's life was characterized by great achievements, not only for unifying the realm without large-scale warfare but also for his effective governance, appointing capable individuals and embracing counsel. His bold and innovative reforms strengthened the nation, ensuring prosperity for the people, a period celebrated as the "Jianxin Era."

He took but one empress throughout his life.

The founding empress of the Lan Kingdom was the brightest and most resplendent woman among the six kingdoms. With her unique wisdom, she cleared all obstacles on the path to unity, loving the people as her own children, deeply cherished by the populace. The tale of her lifelong love with the Ruidi Emperor became a cherished legend.

At Pear Blossom Mountain, bordering Feng and Lan, spring had arrived in April. The earth awakened, and the pear blossoms burst forth almost overnight, blanketing the landscape in pristine white, untouched by dust, interspersed with vibrant green, resembling a paradise.

"What are you doing out here in the wind when you've just awakened?"

Jun Pinyu approached Feng Jiulan, who sat against a tree on the grass, draping his coat over him before sitting beside him.

Feng Jiulan had not truly died; he had taken a potion to feign death. With Lan Yixuan and Yun Qinghen present, Jun Pinyu could not act until he finally brought Feng Jiulan out from the coffin at the royal mausoleum.

The情花蛊, which had fused with her very essence over the years, could only be coaxed out if she did not lose hope. This was a plan they had previously devised, one that even Yun Qinghen remained oblivious to.

Feng Jiulan's condition was exceedingly frail, leaving him with little confidence. After implanting the Forgetful Worry Gu in Xianyue's body, he considered multiple options, ultimately deciding to take Feng Jiulan to Pear Blossom Mountain.

For three long years, Feng Jiulan had remained in a coma. For anyone else, he would have long since given up, but because it was Feng Jiulan, he persisted.

He had promised that no matter what, not even the King of Hell could take Feng Jiulan from him.

For three arduous years, he tried every method. Heaven rewarded his perseverance, and at last, Feng Jiulan awakened.

Born with deficiencies, and further tormented by previous illnesses, his body remained as frail as before. The moment he opened his eyes, Jun Pinyu's long-suspended heart finally found solace, tears of excitement streaming down his cheeks. At that instant, he truly felt that he had repaid his debts to Xianyue; the overwhelming guilt that had weighed upon him vanished at last.

Beneath the tree, amidst the season's blooming pear blossoms, he perceived this as the most splendid sight he had witnessed in three years.

Closing his eyes, the delicate whispers of the wind danced around him, akin to the soft caress of a breeze grazing the petals. Upon opening his eyes, he beheld the blossoms drifting from the branches, creating a rain of petals that swirled around him.

Looking up, the pear trees intertwined, their dark gray trunks cloaked in the pristine white of the blossoms. This purity, so clear and transparent, resonated with Xianyue's words—untainted and pure, it evoked a bittersweet longing within him.

Feng Jiulian opened his eyes and reached out to catch the descending pear blossoms. Xianyue had remarked that his smile resembled these blossoms—innocent and unblemished. Yet, he felt that the immaculate flowers mirrored Xianyue herself—pure and translucent, yet invoking an unshakeable pang of compassion and a yearning to shed tears.

"Your Highness, will you return?"

Feng Jiulian cradled the blossoms in his hands, pressing the snow-white petals against his clean visage, as if melding with the flowers themselves.

With a gentle smile, he rose to his feet. The hillside was adorned with vibrant green grass, sporadically interspersed with blossoming flowers, bursting with vitality. For a decade, Xianyue had spent her days in this very place—so beautiful, yet exhausting when one's heart is tethered to another.

"And you?"

Feng Jiulian turned to observe Jun Pinyu, still seated on the ground.

"Pinyu, you no longer owe Xianyue anything. From now on, live the life you desire. As for me—"

Feng Jiulian carefully placed the blossoms on the ground, filled with tenderness. "As long as I know Xianyue is happy, it matters not where I am."

His pale face broke into a faint smile.

"Are you not planning to return?"

Feng Jiulian shook his head. "I wish to stay here, where the essence of Xianyue lingers, and where Pingting—"

He touched the jade pendant at his waist. "With their company, I shall not feel lonely."

Jun Pinyu leaned against the tree in silence, understanding Feng Jiulian's concerns. Though he had awakened, his body remained weak. He had died once, and those who cared for him had endured pain. His return would undoubtedly incite panic, and his body could hardly withstand any turmoil.

Live the life he desires? Jun Pinyu pondered deeply but could not recall what he truly wished to pursue. He had dedicated his life to medicine—once for Xuanyuanhao, and now…

Jun Pinyu opened his eyes, gazing at Feng Jiulian surrounded by pear trees, his slender figure clad in a thin coat against the backdrop of a clear sky and verdant grass. He found it difficult to leave him alone here, vulnerable and fragile.

Healing the world and saving lives—wasn't there a patient before him desperately in need of care? Although Pear Blossom Mountain was eerily quiet, the environment was exquisite; while elevated, winter was not overly harsh, and nearby were several hot springs. The exquisite wines brewed by Gong Shaohua still lingered. This place was undoubtedly an excellent haven for Feng Jiulian's recovery.

Moreover, within the secret repository, a study housed numerous medical texts, rich in unprecedented records and profound insights into various pathologies. Perhaps there, he could discover the key to alleviating Feng Jiulian's condition.

"Pinyu."

Feng Jiulian turned, his clean visage radiating an ethereal beauty untouched by dust.

"Has Xianyue truly forgotten everything?"

Had she also forgotten those cherished memories from their youth? Had he completely faded from her recollections?

Jun Pinyu rose and approached Feng Jiulian. "Perhaps one day, she will remember."

He was uncertain; time was too fleeting, leaving him no opportunity to conduct experiments. He had only skimmed ancient texts and applied his years of medical experience to concoct remedies.

"It doesn't matter if she doesn't remember, as long as my Xianyue is happy. How is she faring now?"

Feng Jiulian regarded Jun Pinyu. All these years, he had been in a state of unconsciousness, isolated from the world, and even now, he remained oblivious to Xianyue's well-being.

Though he could not see Xianyue, Feng Jiulian held no regrets about his past decision. The battle at Chase Wind Cliff must have been agonizing for her; how could she withstand the shock of his sudden departure? Even if she forgot him, it was of little concern, as long as she could shed her worries. He believed in Lan Yixuan; he would cherish her well.

In this life and the next, never to betray each other.

"She is well."

Jun Pinyu's gaze radiated warmth, tinged with a sense of relief. Xianyue was truly happy and content, having given so much and made such sacrifices. At least for now, she was at peace, the years passing serenely.

"Come inside; you'll catch a chill."

In April, although the sunshine is pleasantly warm, the mountain breeze carries a chill. At this moment, Feng Jiulan's body requires careful nurturing.

"Pin Yu, I wish to see Yue Er. Once my health improves, I long to catch a glimpse of her from afar. I want to know that she is well; that knowledge would bring me peace."

"Wait until you feel a bit better."

Feng Jiulan grasped Jun Pin Yu's hand, suddenly yearning for his recovery to hasten.

Since awakening, he had wanted to ask if Yue Er felt sorrowful upon learning of his departure, but he hesitated; her grief would deepen his own.

As long as he knew she was thriving, everything else would be worth it.

When Lan Yixuan returned to Xuelan Palace, night had already descended, and all the eunuchs and palace maids had been dismissed.

He searched the chambers, scouring every corner for Xian Yue's presence, but finding none and feeling increasingly anxious without any attendants nearby.

"Sir, Miss Xian Yue has likely gone out for a stroll. I will go find her immediately."

Lei Yun, noticing Lan Yixuan's worried expression, gently tugged at Lei An's hand, and the two promptly slipped outside.

Since Xian Yue's awakening, she had forgotten everything from the past. Lan Yixuan had exerted great effort to win her back, yet she seemed to vanish frequently, especially after her recent coronation when she would often leave the palace without warning. With her exceptional agility, slipping away undetected was effortless. If such a situation arose, no matter where Lan Yixuan was—even during court sessions—he would abandon all to seek her, often returning only after a month or two, leaving Lei Yun to shoulder the burden. Fortunately, peace reigned in the land, and no major incidents had occurred.

Now, the situation was dire; Xian Yue was already six months pregnant. At this time, it only served to heighten their worries.

But then again, a phoenix soaring through the nine skies would hardly accept confinement in a deep palace.

"Should I inquire with the gatekeeper?"

Lei An was led to the door by Lei Yun, emphasizing the seriousness of his task.

Lan Yixuan wandered the chambers for a few more laps, ultimately feeling restless and deciding to search for her himself.

In this season, the pear blossoms were in full bloom, filling Xuelan Palace with their sweet fragrance, yet Lan Yixuan's heart remained unsettled in her absence.

At that moment, he pondered where she could be?

As Lan Yixuan strolled through the palace, he looked up to see the brilliant moon casting its light throughout the halls. The golden and jade-tiled roofs shimmered alluringly under the moonlight. On the rooftop, he spotted a familiar white silhouette, perched elegantly as she held a wine jug, bringing it to her nose to take a whiff. With a playful flick of her tongue, she tilted her head back, eager to drink, but after a long pause, she ultimately set it down, a hint of frown gracing her brow. The red pigment between her brows added an enchanting allure, making the onlooker's heart twist with concern. Yet in that moment, Lan Yixuan felt an inexplicable sense of relief.

It turned out she remembered she shouldn't drink while pregnant.

It turned out she hadn't left after all.

With a hint of disappointment, Xian Yue lowered the wine jug and rested her chin in her hands, gazing down at the suddenly appearing Lan Yixuan with a smile on her face.

Lan Yixuan smiled warmly, his eyes shining with affection as he swiftly turned, wrapping his arms around her.

"Why didn't you say anything before coming out?"

Xian Yue playfully stuck out her tongue and tilted her head back to admire the moon, falling into a contemplative silence.

Lan Yixuan caressed her hair, only then noticing the red hairpin she wore, a delicate blend of black and white beads with faint bloodstains visible under the moonlight.

It was the first gift he had given her during their time in Yanjing, their token of love.

"Yue Er."

Xian Yue said nothing but took his hand and placed it against her round belly, her lips curving upwards. "Lan Yixuan, do you hear it? It's moving."

The rhythmic pulse of life within her brought joy to his heart.

Over the past three years, he had traversed the world with her. She remained as spirited as ever, exuding vitality that stirred his emotions.

"Don't try to change the subject; how did you end up on the roof? Do you wish to drink?"

Lan Yixuan's face radiated with joy; even with her memories faded, her essence remained unchanged—still indulgent in food and drink, still enamored with wine.

"Suddenly, I felt an overwhelming desire to drink."

Xian Yue blinked, her long eyelashes fluttering, a playful smile illuminating her face as she gazed at Lan Yixuan.

He retrieved a nearby wine bottle and offered it to her. "It's already six months along; perhaps you could indulge just a little."

Xian Yue giggled, pushing it away, pointing toward the blossoming pear trees at the entrance of the chambers. "Lan Yixuan, look! The pear blossoms are blooming, pure and untainted. They are truly beautiful."

Lan Yixuan followed the direction of her finger, turning to face Xian Yue. Her clear, pristine eyes held a contemplation he could not decipher, a wistful nostalgia.

"Xian Yue."

With concern weighing on him, Lan Yixuan embraced her even tighter.

"Lan Yixuan, even for those who love me, I must seek happiness."

Lan Yixuan was taken aback, his heart quivering as if something was breaking free from within. Xian Yue suddenly turned, kissing his eyes softly. "It's getting late; I'm going to sleep now."

With that, her tinkling laughter shattered his thoughts completely.

Lan Yixuan snapped back to reality, realizing his arms were empty; Xian Yue had gracefully descended to the ground. He gazed at her, her straightened back stirring an inexplicable ache in his heart.

Had she remembered?

Lan Yixuan leaped from the rooftop and hurried after her, pulling Xian Yue tightly into his embrace. "Feng Xian Yue, you once told me, 'Through life and death, we are bound together; hand in hand, we shall grow old together.'"

Xian Yue smiled, holding his hand, her bright eyes sparkling with joy. "For all eternity, we shall never forsake one another."
