Capítulo 7: Chapter 6: Reckoning in the Penthouse

The night was quiet, the city below only a hum of distant traffic, but Gambit's heart pounded in his chest as he crouched on the edge of a building, surveying the scene below. Across from him, Tombstone's penthouse stood like a fortress, sleek and modern, bathed in the eerie glow of streetlights. Fifteen guards patrolled the perimeter, armed to the teeth and ready for a fight. Their faces were hard, grim—men who'd die for a paycheck. But none of that mattered to Remy now. All that mattered was the doorway leading to the office. That's where Tombstone is.

He took a deep breath, backing away from the ledge. His body was battered and sore from the earlier fights, but adrenaline pulsed through his veins. I got this. I got this. I got this. He repeated it like a mantra, as if saying it would make the fear vanish.

With one final breath, Gambit charged forward, leaping off the building. His body twisted in midair, and he smashed through a window, glass shattering in all directions. He landed in a crouch, his bo staff already in hand, as the guards reacted in shock.

For a heartbeat, there was silence.

Then chaos erupted.

The guards scrambled, drawing their weapons as Gambit surged forward, his staff spinning with lethal precision. The first guard rushed him with a baton, but Gambit sidestepped, his bo staff whipping out to crack against the man's jaw. The sound of bone shattering filled the air, and the guard collapsed in a heap.

Two more guards opened fire, but Gambit was already moving, ducking and weaving between the bullets like a shadow. With a flick of his wrist, he tossed three charged cards at them. The cards exploded in a burst of pink energy, sending them flying across the room. Gambit didn't stop. He couldn't afford to.

One by one, he took them down. The bo staff was a blur in his hands, cracking skulls, breaking bones, and incapacitating the guards with ruthless efficiency. He danced through the chaos with agility, his kinetic energy coursing through him, each move precise, each strike devastating.

The last guard lunged at him with a knife, but Gambit spun, sweeping his leg out and knocking the man off his feet. Before the guard could react, Gambit charged a card and flicked it at him. The explosion knocked the man unconscious instantly.

Breathing hard, Gambit stood in the wreckage of the fight. Bodies littered the floor, groaning in pain, but none would rise to challenge him again. He wiped sweat from his brow, his gaze locking onto the door ahead. This is it.

He pushed the door open and stepped inside.

The office was lavish, the floor-to-ceiling windows offering a view of the city below. Tombstone stood in the center of the room, his massive frame casting a long shadow. His skin gleamed like marble, hard and unbreakable, his eyes cold and calculating.

"Time's up, Tombstone," Gambit said, his voice steady despite the ache in his bones. "It's over."

Tombstone smiled, a slow, cruel grin. "You're right about one thing, kid. It is over. But not for me."

Without warning, Tombstone grabbed the heavy desk in front of him and hurled it across the room. Gambit barely had time to react. The desk hit him like a freight train, the force sending him crashing through the office door and out into the hallway. Pain exploded in his chest as he skidded across the floor, gasping for air.

Tombstone didn't wait. He stormed forward, his fists clenched, every step heavy with menace. "You're just a kid playing hero. You think you can stop me?"

Gambit struggled to his feet, his bo staff shaking in his hands. "I've stopped worse than you."

Tombstone lunged, his fist swinging toward Gambit with the force of a sledgehammer. Gambit dodged, barely, the fist crashing into the wall behind him, shattering the plaster. He retaliated with a flurry of strikes from his staff, each one crackling with kinetic energy. The blows hit Tombstone's body but barely seemed to phase him. His skin was too tough, too strong.

Tombstone swung again, and this time Gambit wasn't fast enough. The punch connected with his ribs, and the air was forced from his lungs. He staggered back, pain shooting through him, but he didn't stop. He couldn't.

Summoning his kinetic powers, Gambit charged six cards in his hand and hurled them at Tombstone's face. The cards exploded in a brilliant flash, blinding the hulking man. Tombstone roared in anger, stumbling backward, his hands flying to his eyes.

That was all the opening Gambit needed.

He leapt onto Tombstone's back, wrapping his bo staff around the man's thick neck and pulling tight. Tombstone thrashed wildly, crashing into walls, trying to dislodge Gambit. The force of the impacts rattled his bones, but he held on, tightening his grip. The room was a blur of motion as Tombstone stumbled, slamming Gambit into every surface he could reach.

Then, suddenly, they were both outside. Gambit barely registered the fall as they tumbled over the balcony, the wind rushing past them as they plummeted toward the street below.

Even as they fell, Gambit didn't let go. He tightened his grip around Tombstone's neck, using every ounce of strength to choke him out. The ground rushed up to meet them, and at the last second, Gambit kicked off from Tombstone, positioning himself on top of the villain as they crashed into a parked car.

The impact was bone-shattering. The car crumpled beneath their weight, the sound of metal screeching and glass shattering filling the air. Tombstone took the brunt of the fall, his body slamming into the car with enough force to dent the steel. Gambit rolled off him, groaning in pain, every muscle screaming in protest.

He lay there for a moment, staring up at the night sky, trying to catch his breath. The pain was unbearable, but he was alive. And Tombstone… Tombstone wasn't getting up.

Slowly, agonizingly, Gambit pushed himself to his feet. His body protested with every movement, but he forced himself to keep going. He had to get back to Jaime and Rocio. He had to finish this.

Using the shadows to his advantage, Gambit limped through the alleyways, his body battered and bloody. By the time he reached Jaime's apartment, he could barely stand. He knocked on the door, leaning heavily against the wall.

The door swung open, and Jaime's eyes went wide as he saw Gambit standing there, bloodied and bruised. "Gambit!" he exclaimed, his voice full of worry.

Gambit smiled weakly. "It's over," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. And then, before Jaime could respond, Gambit collapsed, his body finally giving in to the pain.

The news spread like wildfire the next morning.

On every channel, anchors reported on the fall of Tombstone, the notorious crime boss finally captured after years of evading justice. Footage of the wrecked penthouse and the car Tombstone had landed on played on a loop, along with interviews from witnesses who claimed to have seen a man in a trench coat and a mask walking away from the scene.

One witness, in particular, held up a shaky photograph of Gambit. "They fell right onto that car, and then the guy in the coat just walked away. Like it was nothin'."

Remy watched the broadcast from Rocio's apartment, his body wrapped in bandages, wincing with every movement. Jaime sat next to him, his eyes wide with excitement. "You're famous now!" Jaime said, grinning. "Maybe you could join the Justice League!"

Remy laughed, though it hurt to do so. "They ain't gonna care about this," he said, waving his hand dismissively.

But Jaime was undeterred. "I'm serious! You're like a superhero now! Everyone's talking about you."

Remy just shook his head, a small smile on his lips. He wasn't in this for the fame. He'd done what needed to be done. That was enough.

In a darkened room, far from the city, a man in a black and orange mask sat watching the news. His one visible eye narrowed as he watched the footage of Gambit taking down Tombstone's men.

"Interesting," he muttered, leaning back in his chair. Behind him, a figure in the shadows shifted. "Rose," the man said, "we're going to Detroit. We might have a new partner soon."

Elsewhere, a man stood in front of a large screen, watching the same footage. The lights were dim, casting long shadows across the cavernous room.

"What do you think of him, Alfred?" the man asked, his voice calm, controlled.

Alfred stepped forward, his eyes scanning the screen. "He's skilled," the butler replied, "and his powers are… intriguing."

The man in the shadows nodded. "His abilities… they seem to be able to turn anything he touches into a bomb."

"Quite," Alfred agreed, before glancing toward the doorway. "Master Bruce, the family is waiting for dinner."

Bruce Wayne turned away from the screen. "I'm coming." As he walked toward the door, Duke Thomas, Stephanie Brown, and Cassandra Cain appeared in the hallway. Duke's eyes were wide with excitement as he watched the footage.

"That's so cool!" he exclaimed. "Can we eat now? Damian won't let anyone touch the food until you get there."

Bruce shook his head, amused. "I'm coming."

As they walked away, Cassandra lingered behind, her eyes locked on the screen. Stephanie noticed and smirked. "Ohhh," she teased, "you have a crush."

Cassandra's face turned bright red, and she bolted up the stairs, Stephanie's laughter trailing behind her.

In the darkness of Detroit, a hooded figure strode through the streets, the neon lights casting strange patterns on the wet pavement. She passed a sign that read "Welcome to Detroit" before stopping at an alleyway. She pulled back her hood, revealing grey skin, purple hair, and a red gem glowing in the center of her forehead.

"Gambit defeats my father in the future," she muttered to herself. "Guess I'll have to find out why."

With a flick of her wrist, a black-and-white portal opened before her, swirling with dark energy. Without hesitation, she stepped through, vanishing into the void.

Chapter End.
