Capítulo 44: Chapter 44 (edited)

Because of Clark's revelation, Kara finally disclosed her secret: she already knew how to cook.

So, the lunch meal was prepared by her personally.

Martha stood at the kitchen door, watching Kara busy at work, a look of relief and pride on her face.

"Why are you staring at me like that?" Kara asked, slightly uncomfortable. Despite her excellent cooking skills, she suddenly felt a bit rushed.

Martha simply shook her head with a warm smile, her eyes glistening with emotion. Her voice trembled as she said, "My Kara has grown up."

Kara quickly walked over to her adoptive mother and wrapped her arms around her.

Standing tall at 6'3" (1.9 meters), Kara was now the tallest in the family, even taller than Clark.

"Come on, Mom," Kara comforted her. "I'm not married yet; I'm still your daughter."

"But you've moved out, found your own life and job in the big city," Martha said, her voice tinged with both pride and sadness.

From the living room, Jonathan's voice interrupted, "Martha, stop holding her up, and I'm starving! Let her finish cooking."

Martha sighed, muttering, "That man..." before Kara gently nudged her out of the kitchen.

"Mom, you're really going to hinder me. Go on, you can eat soon," Kara said with a playful smile.

Since it was lunch, Kara didn't prepare anything extravagant. Just as Clark predicted, she used potatoes, carrots, and other ingredients from the farm to cook a hearty meal. She steamed a large pot of rice and prepared chicken curry, keeping it simple but delicious.

She even boiled some plain chicken and eggs for the family dog, who had grown increasingly picky about its meals.

Many people advised against feeding dogs salty or spicy food, but Kara often wondered: what did dogs eat before dog food existed? Perhaps dog food was invented after dogs, she mused with a chuckle.

For Martha and Jonathan, this lunch wasn't just about the taste—it was about the fact that it was prepared by their daughter. Kara's cooking outshone any restaurant, not because of the seasoning, but because of the love behind it.

Even the dog cleaned its bowl, happily devouring Kara's special mix.

Kara couldn't help but laugh. "What a way to save face," she muttered.

Afterward, Kara tidied up the kitchen and washed the dishes, but Martha secretly wiped away tears. "My daughter has grown up," she murmured to herself again.

This was why Kara avoided showing her full independence in front of her mother—she didn't want to make her emotional. She thought, Why is she acting like this when I've come back to stay for a whole month?

Kara had taken time off from her busy city life to return to the family farm for a month. She planned to spend quality time with her family and help Clark prepare for his upcoming college life.

However, there was one thing that upset her: Clark's decision to live in a dorm instead of moving in with her.

"I want to live on my own, Kara," Clark explained firmly. "You've always taken care of me, but I need to be independent now."

Kara couldn't argue. After all, she had felt the same way when she left home. It would be hypocritical to impose a double standard.

Martha's earlier tears now made sense—both of her children were leaving the nest. Even Jonathan, usually stoic, seemed emotional. He slipped outside and sat in the back of the pickup truck, his favorite spot to reflect.

The back of the truck had always been Kara's favorite place as well. Since childhood, she loved lying there under the sun or gazing at the stars.

Seeing her adoptive father sitting there, Kara followed, still wearing Martha's apron. She walked over and placed her hands on Jonathan's broad shoulders.

"Feeling sentimental, Dad?" she teased. "Can't bear to let us go?"

Jonathan huffed. "I'm not that old yet."

Kara chuckled and suggested, "Why don't you and Mom sell the farm and move to the city? Then we could all live together again. Clark doesn't want to inherit the farm anyway."

Jonathan considered her words but shook his head firmly. "This farm has been in the Kent family for five or six generations. It's our legacy. I can't abandon it."

"Stubborn as always," Kara muttered under her breath.

Jonathan pretended not to hear. This was his home, and he couldn't imagine leaving it.

"And," he added with a smile, "if you ever get tired of city life, this will always be a place you can come back to."

Moved, Kara hugged her adoptive father tightly.

Jonathan shifted awkwardly. "Come on now, you're too old for this."

Kara rolled her eyes and walked away with a grin.

Jonathan remained seated in the truck, reminiscing about when his children were small and the yard was filled with their laughter.

Over the next few days, Kara fully embraced life on the farm. She spontaneously grabbed tools and joined in the daily chores. For her, with her super strength, it was hardly a challenge.

Martha and Jonathan didn't stop her—they knew she enjoyed helping. Kara had grown up pitching in around the farm, and it was second nature to her.

On the third day, however, Perry White from The Daily Planet called Kara's phone repeatedly. True to her promise of taking a real vacation, Kara ignored the calls.

Frustrated, Perry contacted Jennifer to relay the message.

When Jennifer arrived, she informed Kara that Gotham City was abuzz with rumors about a vigilante. People had started calling him Batman. Just yesterday, he had helped the police arrest Carmine Falcone, Gotham's infamous crime boss.

The city was divided: Was Batman a hero or a menace? Regardless, his actions were making waves.

Perry wanted Kara to write an article on the subject, but Kara was having none of it.

She called Perry directly: "I'm on vacation, remember? I have my column to focus on. Don't even think about it."

She hung up before Perry could respond, leaving him stunned.

"Who's the boss here again?" Perry muttered, shaking his head.
