Chapter 158: Kannabi Bridge

Inside a cave near Kannabi Bridge.

Obito and Kakashi stood on opposite sides, facing the Iwagakure ninja inside the cave.

Unlike during the Chunin Exams, Kakashi's left eye was covered with a bandage, and Obito was panting heavily.

Rin was tied up inside the cave.

The Iwa ninja played with Rin's head mockingly, saying, "You're all useless."

With that, he stood up, blades extending from his sleeves, and charged at Obito and Kakashi.

Seeing this, Kakashi drew the short blade from his back and charged at the Iwa ninja.

After a few intense exchanges, the two were locked in a stalemate.

Just then, using his Sharingan's enhanced dynamic vision, Obito slid forward and kicked the Iwa ninja, toppling him.

Seizing the moment, Kakashi slashed at the Iwa ninja and rushed toward Rin.

Bound within the cave, Rin remained unconscious as though under a genjutsu.

Once Kakashi dispelled the genjutsu, Rin awoke.

"Kakashi, Obito!"

"We're here to rescue you, Rin."

"It's all right now."

Obito, with his three-tomoe Sharingan activated, was sweating.

"All right, let's retreat quickly. We're still close to the battlefield," Kakashi said, loosening Rin's bindings.

Suddenly, the Iwa ninja, who had been cut down, rose from the ground unharmed and laughed, saying, "I see… Quite the teamwork."

"But in the end, you're just kids."

"Right now, you're all still in the palm of our hands."

With that, the Iwa ninja swiftly formed hand seals, slamming his right hand onto the ground.

"Earth Release—Rock Lodging Destruction!"

Creak!

The rocks above started to loosen, falling with heavy thuds.

The cave was collapsing!

"Damn!" Obito yelled, calling out to Rin and Kakashi, "Hurry! Get out of here!"

Rocks began to fall, mixed with larger boulders.

Already low on chakra and exhausted, Kakashi was struck on the ankle by falling rocks, causing him to fall.

"Stupid Kakashi!"

Without hesitation, Obito rushed to Kakashi, grabbing hold of him.

Suddenly, he felt a large boulder loosen above him, starting to fall.

Almost without thinking, Obito pushed Kakashi away from him.

Boom!

The large boulder fell, trapping half of Obito's body beneath it.

Rocks continued to fall, burying the cave.

After a moment, Rin and Kakashi managed to crawl out.

Kakashi turned his head, noticing Rin beside him, and instinctively asked, "Are you okay, Rin?"

Then, remembering, he looked frantically in Obito's direction.

"Obito!"

Seeing Obito's face half-buried beneath the boulder, this time, Kakashi didn't call him dead last. Instead, he hurried to Obito's side, trying to push the rock away.

But he was already out of strength, his chakra nearly depleted.

The boulder didn't budge.

"Stop… That's enough, stupid Kakashi."

"I'm done for… This is the last time I'll call you an idiot."

Seeing Kakashi still trying to push the boulder, Obito smiled faintly.

"The entire right side of my body's crushed… I can't even feel it anymore."

Kakashi, exhausted, leaned against the boulder, gasping for air.

Obito, barely able to speak, coughed up blood.

Blood trickled down the boulder, dripping onto his clothes and staining them red.

"Obito!!"

Rin, a medical ninja, knew that with his right side crushed, Obito couldn't be saved.

Even Tsunade wouldn't be able to help in this situation.

She cried out Obito's name in despair.

Kakashi, too, fell to his knees, his fists slamming the ground in regret.

"If only I'd tried harder… just a bit harder…"

"If I'd noticed he wasn't dead, if I'd killed him at the start…"

"This wouldn't have happened!"

"What kind of team leader am I, what kind of Jonin?!"

"If Haneda were here, this would've never happened!"

Obito listened in silence, closing his eyes, as if lost in a happy memory.

With a faint smile, he said, "Now that you mention it… I almost forgot…"

"I never gave you a gift to celebrate making Jonin."

"Kakashi, take my Sharingan as a gift. It's the only thing I can give you." (T/N: Not this again! This shit only holds back Kakashi. I feel like there will be no change from canon.)

Obito opened his eyes, the Sharingan visible in his pupil.

Using all his remaining strength, he took a charm from his pouch and handed it to Kakashi.

"And… tell Haneda."

"Tell him, this is the last time I leave without a word."

"Tell him not to hate me for leaving, and not to dream about me."

Images flashed through Obito's mind.

Meeting that fool Haneda, skipping classes together, sleeping together, learning together, training together…

Bang—

Four cups of sake clinking together, the seeds of dreams sprouting in his ears.

"Haneda, I hate to admit it, but with your talent and strength, your dreams… they must be pretty extraordinary, right?"

"Dreams?"

"To see everyone safe and sound—that's my dream."

"What?! I thought you'd want to be Hokage too; that's so boring."

"Haha, Haneda, if you want to be Hokage, you'd have no chance against me, loser."

"Shut up! Idiot Kakashi! One day, I'll become Hokage and prove myself!"

"Losers have no chance; you couldn't even pass the written Chunin exam."

What a shame…

That he wouldn't get to show him himself as Hokage…

In a forest, Haneda sped through the trees, heading toward Kannabi Bridge.

Surrounded by Konoha and Iwa shinobi, Haneda activated his three-tomoe Sharingan, grabbing one of the Iwa shinobi by the neck.

"Do you know where Kakashi Hatake and his team are?"

"I don't know…"

"Useless."

Haneda swiftly ended the shinobi's life and continued searching.

He had already reached the battlefield near Kannabi Bridge but hadn't found Obito's team yet.

He glanced at the sky.

It was already afternoon.

"Damn it!"

"I have to be faster! Faster!!"

Haneda moved through the battlefield.

Suddenly, a Jonin in an Iwa vest, with a sword wound on his back, caught his eye.

Haneda recognized the familiar presence from that wound.

Just one look from his three-tomoe Sharingan, and the Iwa shinobi was under his control.

"Do you know where Hatake Kakashi and his team are?"

"Those three kids? They're already dead."

Haneda froze, his heartbeat racing, and his Sharingan began spinning uncontrollably.

"Tell me which direction!!"

The Iwa shinobi pointed toward the western sun, and in a flash of lightning, Haneda ended his life.

"Faster!"

"Faster!!"

"Even faster!!!"

Lightning-style chakra surged around his legs, Haneda drawing on the Lightning Chakra Mode he'd learned from A.

Normally, he avoided it because of the injuries it caused, but now, he had no time to hesitate.

Lightning coursed through the trees, bringing him to a collapsed cave.

His three-tomoe Sharingan met another, and they fell silent.
