Chapter 117
"The winner, Hatake Kakashi!"
As the referee announced Kakashi's victory, the audience erupted in cheers. They were amazed by Might Guy's powerful display and Kakashi's brilliant strategy and final burst of swordsmanship.
It was undoubtedly an exhilarating match.
The Third Hokage watched these new budding leaves of the village, his gaze shifting from Minato to Sakumo, and finally resting on Haneda. He silently took a puff from his pipe, recalling his old comrade—Uchiha Kagami. However, Haneda didn't show the same love for the village that Kagami once had.
'Kakashi, I hope you can surpass Haneda this time,' the Third thought, his eyes lingering on Kakashi's figure.
On the other side of the stands, Sakumo smiled as he watched Kakashi, who had almost completely dominated Guy, whose strength now matched that of a Jōnin. He turned to Haneda and said with a grin, "Be careful. Kakashi still has a move he hasn't used yet."
Asuma, overhearing this, looked worried. "Sakumo-sensei! Could that move possibly beat Haneda?"
Sakumo nodded with a smile. "It's the pinnacle of lightning chakra manipulation. Kakashi hasn't fully mastered it yet, but it's powerful enough."
At that moment, Haneda spoke up confidently, "No matter how far Kakashi's lightning chakra manipulation and shape transformation has progressed, I'll still be stronger."
Hearing Haneda's calm yet self-assured tone, Asuma's previous anxiety and tension melted away. His face turned red, and he slapped himself. "How could I doubt Haneda? I'm such an idiot!"
After Guy was carried off by the medics and Kakashi had left, the referee announced, "Next match: Uchiha Haneda versus Nohara Rin."
Hearing that Rin was up next, Obito shouted toward Haneda, "Haneda! Don't go too hard on her!"
"Don't worry, I never rough up girls," Haneda replied, jumping down from the stands and glancing back at Obito.
Obito then turned his attention to Rin, who was walking down. "If you're in trouble, don't hesitate to surrender. You know Haneda doesn't always hold back."
Rin smiled warmly. "Funny, Obito, you're saying the same thing I always tell you."
"I—I'm just worried about you, that's all," Obito stammered, blushing as he scratched the back of his head.
Once Haneda and Rin were in position, the referee raised the red flag and announced, "Uchiha Haneda versus Nohara Rin. Begin!"
As soon as the flag dropped, Haneda activated his three-tomoe Sharingan. Before Rin could even react, the hypnotic power of the Sharingan took hold, and her pupils morphed into three tomoe.
"I forfeit," Rin, now under Haneda's control, raised her right hand and declared loudly.
The crowd was momentarily confused, unsure of what had just happened. It wasn't until the referee officially announced the match's end that the stands erupted like a powder keg.
"Was that… an instant win?"
"What just happened?!"
"It must've been genjutsu. Against the Uchiha's genjutsu, one-on-one victory is nearly impossible."
Unlike the bewildered audience, the shinobi from Sunagakure remained calm. They were already well aware of Haneda's prowess with genjutsu. To them, this fight was just a formality.
Meanwhile, Terumi Mei of the Mist Village couldn't help but take a few extra glances at Haneda. 'Uchiha Haneda—handsome and strong, a true Uchiha.' She licked her lips, intrigued by the thought that his three-tomoe Sharingan might actually give her a decent challenge.
According to the match schedule, there was a fifteen-minute break after the semifinals to allow the competitors to recover their chakra and stamina.
During this break, a gambling frenzy erupted.
Bored gamblers, unable to resist, began placing their bets. Surprisingly, Haneda's odds steadily increased, meaning most betters favored Kakashi. Despite Haneda's prowess being comparable to a high-level Jōnin, the fact that he had primarily showcased genjutsu caused many to overlook him in favor of Kakashi, who had demonstrated raw power and tactical brilliance.
In the Uchiha clan's section, a clan member whispered something to the clan head. His expression turned a bit strange as he said to Fugaku, "Go to the underground betting hall and place 30 million on Haneda to win!"
"Father, isn't it unbecoming for the Uchiha to participate in such things?" Fugaku hesitated, feeling that engaging in gambling was beneath the pride of the Uchiha.
"The odds for Haneda are currently at 4.7 and rising. This is a guaranteed profit."
The clan head shot Fugaku a glance, noticing his discomfort, and added, "Besides, it's a way of showing support for Haneda. When was the last time an Uchiha had odds this high?"
Hearing it was for supporting Haneda, Fugaku quickly overlooked the rest of his father's reasoning. He grabbed a scroll containing 30 million ryō and hurried to the underground betting hall. When he arrived, he couldn't resist adding another 5.2 million of his own, just to make it more personal.
Meanwhile, when news of the Uchiha clan's 35.2 million bet on Haneda reached Danzo's ears, he sneered.
"Uchiha Kenji has truly lost his mind, behaving like some lowly gambler."
A Root ninja then reported, "Danzo-sama, Haneda's odds are now at 4.93."
"4.93?!"
Danzo, still fuming about the recent budget cuts to Root, couldn't help but be tempted. He ordered, "Place 3 million on Hatake Kakashi in my name. But quietly, spread out another 50 million on that Uchiha brat. Make sure it doesn't trace back to me."
Meanwhile, Asuma, who had gone to the restroom, noticed a commotion outside the arena. Curious, he squeezed through the crowd. He initially turned up his nose when he realized it was a gambling den. But then he overheard the name Uchiha Haneda.
"What?! Haneda's odds are 4.73?! These people don't realize how powerful Haneda is!'
Without hesitation, Asuma bet his entire savings—all 35 million ryō he had accumulated over several years.
As the odds dropped slightly, Asuma smiled in satisfaction. No matter how well Kakashi had performed earlier, he always believed in Haneda, the one who always stood at the front.
By the time the final match was about to start, Haneda's odds had settled at 4.13.
Back in the stands, as Haneda prepared to head to the battlefield, Obito grabbed his arm.
"Seriously, Haneda, you better not lose this one!"
Haneda simply smiled in response, turning his gaze to Kakashi, who had also just looked over. Neither of them said a word as they simultaneously leapt from the stands, each taking their position on the battlefield, ready to face each other.
Suddenly, Obito's voice echoed through the arena again.
"Go, Haneda! Make sure you beat Kakashi to a pulp! Show him that the Uchiha are the strongest!"
"Idiot," Kakashi mouthed, but Obito, oblivious, ignored him.
At that moment, the referee raised the red flag and declared, "Uchiha Haneda versus Hatake Kakashi. Begin!"
