The door clicked shut behind me as Sofia's cold eyes narrowed, her expression hardening the moment she caught sight of me standing in Bruno's study.
"Just what do you think you're doing in here, Maria?" she sneered, her voice a low, dangerous whisper. "This room is off-limits to everyone, especially you."
I swallowed, my mind scrambling for an excuse, something—anything—that would get me out of this.
Sofia's gaze was sharp and unyielding, as if she could see right through me, and I felt my heart pounding so hard I was sure she could hear it.
"I… I was looking for some papers," I stammered, my voice coming out more uncertain than I'd intended. "Bruno asked me to help him find some files for his meeting tomorrow. He told me they'd be in here, so I came to look."
