CHAPTER 12

Serene

The lift doors opened, and I stepped out into my office. I instantly grabbed my phone and followed my agents inside the boarding room. While everyone else waited, I went directly to the one seat that was clearly mine. The door opened, and someone I did not expect to see walked in. His gaze met mine, and I got shivers. He came in and sat next to me.

Lift, his aroma enveloped me and everyone else close to him, and he turned to my side and grinned at me. The agent, on the other hand, smiled at him, believing he was smiling at her. Our boss stepped up and eventually introduced the man I ran into as the company's largest shareholder and a key figure. We waited for the conference to end, and everyone began leaving the boarding room as I packed my things. His stare caught mine, and I experienced goosebumps.

I entered my office and took a sip of water. "Serene, please calm down. What exactly are you doing?" I whispered to myself, biting my nails and going over my ideas. I hurriedly clutched my tummy after feeling a tremor beneath my belly button. "Honey, I hope you are OK in there," I whispered, clutching myself.

I felt another vibration and hurriedly grabbed my phone before heading inside the café. I stepped inside and requested some fruit. Someone stood in front of me just as I was taking my seat. I looked up to see who it was and could not believe what I saw. Again, it is that man.

"What a nice surprise," he said, beaming at me.

I was going to speak when he pulled out the chair in front of me and sat down. I was surprised and hastily forced a grin. "My name is Max Cruz," he added, offering his hand to me.

"Serene Brights," I responded, reaching for his hand. When our hands connected, I could feel electric impulses pouring through me, and his eyes sparkled.

"Nice to meet you, madam; you are really bright," He smiled at me.

"Thanks."

"So Ms. Brights, I heard you came from New York?" He asked.

"Yes, that's true I'm from there," I responded.

"I hope you don't feel bad, but let me ask you out tonight."

"I don't think I have time to do that but I'll definitely see you around," I said as I stood up to walk away.

I went into the lift and found one of my agents inside. "I noticed that Mr. Cruz couldn't keep his eyes off you," they said to me.

"What, really?" I responded pretending to have not noticed.

"Yes, ma'am, he was simply on you; the boss saw, but he just kept things neutral," they repeated.

I did not like the sound of it, so I exited the elevator as soon as it opened and walked to my office, but the secretary sent me to the boss's office. I went there, and he was pleased to see me

"Ms. Brights, please have a seat," he requested, and I did so.

"Is everything OK, sir?" I inquired.

"Yes, everything is OK; I would like to send you and three of your agents to New York for a very important meeting," the boss said, making my pulse skip a beat.

"What New York?" I inquired knowing I had heard him.

"Yes, all you have to do is select two of your most dependable agents," He said.

I stepped out of his office and proceeded to fetch my bags before heading home. Just as I neared my car, I noticed Max conversing to some business people from a distance; before he could notice me, I hopped into the car and told the driver to start. I entered my apartment when I arrived home, went into the living room, dumped all of my bags on the sofa, kicked off my shoes, and settled down. I answered the call when my phone buzzed.

"Hello." I answered the phone.

,"Serene Brights, you are such a serpent you know." The caller responded.

"What is this, who is it?" I asked but continued to insult me even after I requested.

"I am aware that it's you Nelly; Diego was the one from whom I got the money; get mental health treatment if you are upset about it," I said assuming it's Nelly.

They continued, "This is not Nelly; you must have forgotten how I packed your suitcases since you got divorced."

"Nora!" I exclaimed

"Oh, now you know; anyhow, I just wanted to let you know that the fact that you took the money shows you are a gold digger," she said, disconnecting before I could respond.

I cursed her for calling and stood up from the couch to walk upstairs. I stepped into my room, feeling bad about what she said to me. I stood in front of the mirror and looked at myself. My eyes welled up with tears when I felt my baby move. I was about to get into the shower when my phone rang, but I ignored it and proceeded to take a bath.

My phone rang on the desk again, and I answered it. "Hello, Ms. Brights," the caller answered.

"Yes, hello," I responded back.

"I hope I did not call at the wrong moment; I am having trouble dealing with my emotions after seeing you," the caller stated, and I wondered who it was.

"Who is this," I inquired.

"What? You have already forgotten about me, but I can not because of the event in the lift," the caller explained.

What? It was him. I remembered immediately as it was with him I had a moment in the lift Max Cruz.

"Hello—" He said in a wondering tone as I remained silent.

I immediately hung up and wondered who gave him my number. I guess he found it from my agents but what would he want at this time? I just hope he doesn't know my address at that thought, a knock sounded on my door.
