Capítulo 111: I'm going to faint

The air was thick with tension, and I could feel my magic thrumming beneath my skin like a restless beast. The masked men weren't done; their ranks were endless, pouring onto the beach like a black tide.

I tightened my grip on the flaming bow I'd conjured, the heat from its string searing the air. Beside me, Xyra stood frozen, her usually sharp tongue replaced by wide-eyed silence. Levan, on the other hand, was valiantly trying to fend off two attackers with a stick.

A stick.

"This," I muttered under my breath as I loosed an arrow of fire, "is why he's not my problem."

The arrow hit its mark, engulfing one of the masked men in a burst of flames. He dropped his weapon, screaming, and I wasted no time aiming at the next.

"Ren, behind you!" Xyra's voice rang out, sharp and commanding.

I pivoted just in time to block a blade aimed for my neck, the steel clashing against the fiery shield I'd summoned around my arm. With a grunt, I pushed the attacker back and sent a kick to his midsection, knocking him into the sand.

"Thanks," I said curtly, sparing Xyra a glance.

She didn't respond, but there was a flicker of something in her eyes—concern? No, couldn't be.

Another wave of attackers surged forward, and I braced myself, drawing back the bowstring.

The arrow that formed was brighter, hotter, crackling with energy I barely had to spare. Sending out 99 fire clones had been overkill, I admitted that now. My reserves were running low, but there was no time to dwell on regrets.

"Ren, there's too many of them!" Xyra said, her voice rising in panic.

"Yeah, I noticed," I replied, letting the arrow fly.

It streaked through the air like a comet, splitting into three mid-flight and striking the front line of enemies. The explosion sent sand and smoke billowing everywhere, giving us a momentary reprieve.

Levan, to his credit, was still standing barely. One of the masked men had him in a headlock, and he was flailing like a fish out of water.

"Ren!" he gasped. "A little help here?"

I sighed dramatically. "You've got this, Levan. Believe in yourself."

Another attacker lunged at me, and I sidestepped, slamming the fiery shield into his face.

"Ren!" Levan whined, his voice muffled by the arm around his neck.

"Fine," I muttered, flicking my fingers. A small burst of fire shot out, singeing the attacker's trousers and sending him yelping into the surf.

Levan collapsed onto the sand, gasping for air. "You're a terrible bodyguard."

"Good thing I'm not your bodyguard, then," I shot back, turning my attention to the next wave of enemies.

The fight was relentless. My movements were growing slower, each spell taking more effort than the last. The fire clones were draining me more than I'd anticipated, their distant battles tugging at my energy like anchors.

"Damn it," I muttered, summoning another arrow. My hands were trembling now, and the fire sputtered as I drew back the string.

"Ren, are you okay?" Xyra asked, her voice quieter this time.

"I'm fine," I lied, releasing the arrow. It struck true, but the effort sent a wave of dizziness crashing over me.

In the corner of my eye, I saw Xyra step closer. "You don't look fine."

"I said I'm fine!" I snapped, but the crack in my voice betrayed me.

Another masked man charged, and I raised my bow, intending to fire, but my vision blurred. The next thing I knew, Xyra was pulling me back, her grip surprisingly strong.

"Ren!" she shouted, shaking me.

"I've got this," I murmured, trying to push her away.

But I didn't. Not anymore.

The masked men were closing in, their numbers overwhelming. I could hear Levan yelling something incoherent, but his voice was drowned out by the pounding in my head.

I had one option left.

"Xyra," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

She leaned in, her eyes wide. "What is it?"

"Hold on," I said, grabbing her arm.

"What? Ren, what are you—"

Before she could finish, I focused the last of my magic, summoning a teleportation spell. The air around us shimmered with heat, and the world blurred into a swirl of red and gold.

The last thing I saw before everything went dark was Xyra's face, a mix of shock and something else I couldn't place.

Then, nothing.
