At night, another wolf howl was heard, and the person sleeping in the house suddenly jumped up and rushed outside.
They saw dark clouds approaching from afar.
Li Pan arrived at the scene and was startled, "What is this?"
"Mutated Birds, they've smelled the scent of the ripe grain."
"Pan'er, listen to my command. Your Space Barrier has a time limit. Open it only when I tell you to."
Liu Qian immediately took charge of directing Li Pan, her experience in combat was rich.
Li Pan nodded vigorously and waved her hand to move the Star Tree out, placing it directly on the surface. The Star Tree quickly took root near the Pine Forest District.
Liu Qian stood at the vegetable garden, waiting to kill the Mutated Birds while Xue Dong and the others had already started to intercept the birds in advance.
The Mutated Birds were getting closer, and only then did Li Pan see clearly. What a dark cloud, it was all birds, blocking the moonlight in the sky.
"Open!"
At Liu Qian's command, Li Pan didn't hesitate to follow orders, opening the Space Barrier.
Liu Qian and the others began to kill the Mutated Birds. Xue Dong and Qin Jianzhong coordinated, one using wind, the other fire, the wind aiding the fire to burn the birds in patches.
Meanwhile, Liu Qian froze the Mutated Birds.
Li Pan stood next to the Star Tree, using wood vines to direct and tie up the frozen birds that had not died completely.
The Star Tree, being a Spirit Plant, its most important skill was devouring; it devoured all life forms with energy.
The Mutated Birds were pierced by the wood vines, their flesh rapidly drained, leaving just a skin behind.
Numerous wood vines, waving like spirit snakes, instantly drained the tied-up Mutated Birds dry, speeding through the process and helping to kill a large number of them.
"Time is almost up."
"Jianzhong, Xue Dong, prepare the Fire Cloud."
Liu Qian called out loudly once again.
With Liu Qian applying a large-scale freeze, Xue Dong and Qin Jianzhong coordinated in front to aid the wind with fire to create a firestorm cloud for the first wave of interception. Liu Qian took on the second wave with freezing, and the Star Tree handled the third wave by draining the blood and flesh of any birds that slipped through, achieving an assembly-line slaughter of the Mutated Birds.
Each time the Space Barrier closed, it required twenty minutes to recover. This needed Li Pan's superpower to recover, and it also gave the Star Tree a chance to breathe, as it was still a sapling.
"Get ready, open the Barrier."
As soon as the time came, Li Pan reminded everyone immediately.
"Open."
The Space Barrier opened again, trapping a group of Mutated Birds outside the Barrier and some inside, whom Liu Qian and the others took down one by one.
Two hours later, not much was harvested from the Mutated Birds; they flew away rapidly and did not return.
This wave of attack had finally passed.
The wood vines wrapped up all the Mutated Birds on the ground and drained them dry, feasting significantly.
"Check the losses."
Xue Dong came back and checked each area.
There were losses, and despite their rich combat experience, some Mutated Birds inevitably fell down and ate the grain.
Fortunately, the loss was not significant. Over eighty percent was saved, and while some areas were gnawed on, creating pits and holes, the vast majority remained intact.
"Such a pity, damn it!"
Qin Jianzhong swore loudly in frustration.
The vegetable garden also suffered some losses; a third was gone, the topsoil visibly scraped off, not even leaves left, just lumps of soil remained.
The intact areas still yielded some harvest, thankfully saving about two-thirds of the vegetable garden.
Li Pan sighed continuously in distress, bending down to tidy up the area.
"It's fortunate that most of it was saved; otherwise, even the roots wouldn't have been left today."
Liu Qian was also in the field, feeling incredibly regretful.
Li Pan insisted on infusing the field with another surge of superpower to help the crops recover.
Star Tree, having fed well, automatically returned inside Li Pan's body to rest.
Today, it had swallowed numerous Mutated Birds, almost all of which had been killed and devoured by Star Tree, leaving only feathers behind.
"Are these feathers still usable?"
"Yes, collect them and we can sell them. It's a good way to recycle."
The sky had brightened by the time they finished picking up, and after hastily eating something to catch their breath, Li Pan went into the fields to check each one again. Fortunately, the damage wasn't severe, which was a relief. She just hoped no more Mutant Beasts would come; she couldn't take it anymore.
From that day on, Xue Dong and two others took turns keeping watch at night without rest.
Five days later, corn and rice began to mature one after another. All four of them worked in the fields to harvest the crops quickly, fearing another visit from the Mutant Beasts, working against the clock to collect the crops.
Liu Qian had already called to have a senior Space superpower user come to the base to weigh the grains.
The harvested grains needed to be dried, and Li Pan had already laid straw mats in the courtyard ahead of time to facilitate quick retrieval in case of rain.
They even lit the kang, which was warm and could be used for drying.
People from the base arrived, Gao Wenbin, Zhao Quan, and another senior Space superpower user came to help with the grain harvest and the drying process.
"Wow, it's a bountiful harvest! Congratulations, your hard work has paid off; you are the first to harvest."
"It was a close call. We were attacked by Mutated Birds. Look over there, those holes were made by the birds eating the crops."
"I've heard about it. A few other farms were also attacked by Mutant animals, suffering heavy losses. It's going to be a tough year, the boss is almost turning grey from the stress."
Gao Wenbin encouraged everyone to get to work.
With many hands making light work, they assembled a production line. They collected on one end, then dried on the kang on the other.
They had their meals in the fields, working till two in the morning before returning to their rooms.
At night, someone kept watch, looking out for rain or Mutant Animals trying to steal the food. The grains needed to be dry, or else they would mold due to moisture.
Gao Wenbin and his team settled in, as there were plenty of empty houses with complete furnishings.
Next to the small two-story building, there was also a row of bungalows, suitable for living or storage.
It took six or seven days to completely gather the grains. Thankfully, the weather was sunny. With the grains sufficiently dried, Gao Wenbin hastened to take them back. He planned to visit other farms to see if they could buy more grains for the base.
Originally, they planned to keep twenty percent, but Gao Wenbin pleaded for more.
"Xue Dong, please give us an extra ten percent of the grains. I fear that other farms haven't harvested as much as you and won't be able to gather much. If you run short later, I'll ask the boss to sell you some grains. The boss values your sister's superb abilities; he's even exchanged a Wood Element Crystal Core for you. You won't be at a loss. Please, sell me some more grains; besides pleading, I have no other option."
Being brothers, he understood the base's difficulties, and he could only ask his own brothers for help. Other farms that harvested less wouldn't sell to the base, and there was nothing he could do about it.
"Pan'er, what do you think?"
"Well, can we keep ten thousand catties of grain for ourselves to eat? If that's enough, let's give the rest to them. Uncle has always taken good care of me, giving me so many Wood Element Crystal Cores. Soon, it's time to plant wheat, the land has been mostly cultivated, and the sorghum will also be ready in a month or two. If we run short, we can still make up for it later."
"Alright, my Pan'er has a kind heart, so give it all to them. But don't forget about the Wood Element Crystal Cores. Remember us when there's a good deal; I haven't forgotten our brotherhood."
Xue Dong gestured upward with his chin at Gao Wenbin.
"We're brothers who have each other's backs; the boss remembers your kindness."
"Alright, take these Medicinal Materials back as well."
"Okay."
After weighing and recording everything meticulously, they finalized the paperwork, stamped it as per protocol—a step that couldn't be skipped for official audits.
Gao Wenbin and his team took the grains back, somewhat relieved. No matter what, the base now had food and could hold on for some time.
After they left, the household chores were far from over.
Sorghum was also nearing maturity, and the rice and corn fields needed a break to restore soil fertility. She planned to plant Purple clover, which was edible for cattle and goats and could enrich the soil.
She also planned to plant green beans and rotate to another plot to plant another season of corn, expecting another harvest before autumn. She didn't want to waste any time.
She also intended to plant more soybeans, winter wheat, peanuts, and other vegetables to gain additional income and produce.
