Capítulo 1: Chapter 1 A Dream Awakened

Julian Kesma, the third son in his family and with two older brothers and a sister, plus three younger brothers and also two sisters around him. For this generation, the Kesma family had appeared to be thriving with children.

Yet, with no hereditary duties to fulfill and such a sprawling family the Kesma name bore surprisingly little weight. Back home everyone would make jokes about Farmer Kesma and his brood. It was a pretty easy target to poke fun of the man who made so many kids.

In other words, Julian was a normal farmboy working all day in the field. Hours were hustled away at physical work, and by the time his day was over he had little energy left for himself.

Had destiny not interfered, Julian would have had a modest future; at twenty he would marry (he was planning to offer cows or pigs as part of his mahr [dowry]) and be woven into the fabric of life with someone from around here—probably a local girl whose hands were calloused like his own and splattered in freckles due to working on their land. He would, in time, like his father before him be driven off to build a small lean-to down the road with family when losing their home and become another chapter of inter generational poverty.

He was plowing new ground during the day while his acreage slowly grew, with crops he nearly tended themselves.

In the evenings, he pursued his heritage by building a family and wroughting enough cubs to keep the work of youth at pent.

For some of them it was a quiet, uneventful life — such as that of many farmers. Though they lived some fleeting hours of pleasure, Most time they lived in such a bland way!

However, that was the default case with no surprising occurrence. Julian, however, had an unexpected turn of event. One fateful event changed everything for Julian.

...

"Oh no! What happened?" Mrs. Kesma gasped with horror as her eldest and second son hauled the limp body of Julian from the cart.

He had clearly received a head injury, he bore the scar of an old blood stain on his temple. After falling off a tree, after sneaking some sips of his father's liquor.

There was not much to do for entertainment out in the middle of nowhere. When not at the evening routs, the kids could sit gambling and drinking or watching sexy girls. Every now and then, a bunch of them would go hunting to supplement the table.

Mason, the oldest of them all, wiped some sweat off his forehead and told his mother about their perspective on what had occurred. On the afternoon, while taking a break in the haystack right after completing their chores, a stone flew out of nowhere and Julian Kesma's brother found him lying there lifeless on the ground.

She then kneeled, took the boy by his shoulders and as her eyes watered, she gently brushed Julian's hair with those big rough hands of hers. She whispered, "My poor Julian…" But when she looked up her eyes became fierce. "Who threw that rock?" she demanded.

Out in the country, manners were considered a handicap, any soft spoken woman won't even live past thirty years old, and she will get depressed, Don't underestimate the lethality of the country people. The highly repetitive heavy agricultural work has made them all have a less friendly and far more brutal than they usually shows.

Mason just shrugged and, while grinning sheepishly, conceded he wasn't certain who threw the rock.

Annoyed, Mrs. Kesma scolded him then instructed her boys to lug Julian up the rickety stairs and back into his bed.

He wasn't taken to the doctor nor was any priest called. Not that they couldn't afford, they just waited. If Julian did not open his eyes in a day or two, they would fetch the village priest, or the toothless doctor whose voice whistled when he spoke.

It may appear neglectful to outsiders, but the country people saw this as practical. You only would spend towards the essentials.

Julian began to dream, vivid and strange dreams in a coma. In these visions, he saw odd and horrific things happen to people, with a weapon that bore the name 'bullet' taking life. This was the sight that brought him back to his senses.

"I want to go to the city!"

Those were the first words that came out of his mouth when he opened his eyes, changing things up and throwing life off balance for everyone.

Across from his son, Mr. Kesma sat on a wooden chair, legs crossed with a cigarette in hand. The rest of the family sat in silence, their heads down as they all waited for a response from their leader.

"You want to go to the city! why?" And Mr. Kesma repeated, in a voice tinged with skepticism: "City?" It struck him as a silly idea. The city? That was definitely a place they did not belong to. A bad place, the kind where you paid a fee with every breath.

When you have no money, you are a beggar only. One in which, if you were lucky, someone would throw scraps your way. Otherwise, you could be picked up and sent north to the mines, working in conditions where young men like Julian were prized for their vigor while they throw away their lives for the nobles.

Julian, however principled or hardheaded as you may wish to view him replied firmly. "Yes, Father. I must go. My life is too precious to rot here. If I don't strive for something better, then what am I going to do? stay here and just be another slave to poverty."

"You can't even read! Street signs, newspapers, you'd be completely lost, you won't be any better than a blind man going there!" Repelling his son's aspirations, Mr. Kesma countered.

Julian knew's that Mr. Kesma was trying his best to stop him, but Julian had already made up his mind to leave the village. It is impossible for him to rot and decay in this place like a corpse, and He was determined to create a better future.
