Hikigaya's mind was racing with conflicting thoughts, but outwardly, he remained cautious, quietly sitting in the break room, eavesdropping on the conversation happening in the guidance office next door.
Chabashira Sae was pressing Horikita Suzune with her words, gradually influencing her further.
"Horikita, assuming that 'no one would be happy about being undervalued' might be a bit premature," Chabashira said, her tone steady. "If you were in Class A, the pressure of constant competition would be even heavier than you imagine. Some people actually feel relieved to be placed in Class D."
Horikita's expression shifted slightly. She recalled a conversation she had with Hikigaya where he mentioned something similar, saying there was no room to fall further in Class D, which could be seen as a blessing in disguise.
For a moment, her emotions were complicated.
"There may be people like that," Horikita replied, rejecting Hikigaya's survival approach. "But I will never be one of them."
Her voice was firm as she continued, "Regardless of how others feel, I want you to confirm again whether my placement in Class D was an error, and whether there was a mistake in the scoring."
"I'm afraid not. You were placed in Class D because that's the level of student you are. It wasn't a mistake by the school."
"...I see. I'll take this up with the school again," Horikita said, her tone growing more determined, making it clear she wouldn't let this matter drop.
Chabashira, unfazed by her challenge, responded calmly, "Even if you take it to the higher-ups, the result will be the same. Besides, being in Class D doesn't mean there's no chance of climbing up."
"I don't believe that's possible," Horikita replied after a brief pause, recalling her previous conversation with Hikigaya. However, she stood by her view. "How can Class D, filled with immature students, possibly surpass Class A? It's just not feasible."
"That's none of my concern," Chabashira said indifferently. "Whether or not you want to pursue that reckless path is up to you. But tell me, Horikita Suzune, do you have a special reason for needing to get into Class A?"
"That is..."
Horikita hesitated, but ultimately didn't answer. Instead, she stood up. "Since there's no room for change, I'll take my leave. But remember, I don't accept this outcome."
"Don't be so hasty," Chabashira said, stopping her. She then turned her gaze toward Ayanokoji. "You've been listening, haven't you?"
"Uh, I zoned out a bit," Ayanokoji pretended to protest, clearly not wanting to get involved.
Chabashira chuckled. "Come on, Ayanokoji. Let me explain why I called you in here."
She temporarily placated Horikita before continuing.
"I've been reviewing the entrance exam results to think about how to offer individual guidance. But when I looked at your scores, I noticed something very interesting."
Chabashira pulled out a few exam sheets. "50 in Japanese, 50 in math, 50 in English, 50 in social studies, and 50 in science. Oh, and your score on the recent quiz was also 50. Do you know what this means?"
"All 50s?" Horikita was astonished, staring at Ayanokoji in disbelief.
"The coincidence is terrifying, isn't it?" Ayanokoji replied with an unbothered expression.
"Oh? So you're saying that getting 50 in every subject was purely accidental?"
"Of course it was. What would I gain from manipulating my exam scores? If I were smart enough to do that, I'd just aim for full marks."
"You're quite an annoying student, aren't you?" Chabashira said with a hint of amusement. "Take this fifth math question, for instance. The school-wide correct answer rate was 3%, yet you solved every complex equation perfectly. On the other hand, the tenth question had a 76% correct answer rate, and you got it wrong. Why?"
"I don't know what the 'norm' is in this world, but those results were just a coincidence."
"My, my. I admire your straightforwardness, but it's going to make your future quite difficult," Chabashira commented.
"That's a problem for later. I'll figure it out when the time comes," Ayanokoji shrugged.
His nonchalant attitude left Chabashira at a loss for how to continue, while Horikita began to realize just how unusual Ayanokoji truly was.
This day had turned out to be nothing short of extraordinary for her. Not only had her world been upended by discovering the true nature of the school's meritocratic system, but she had also seen two completely different sides of both Hikigaya and Ayanokoji. Who would have thought that these two guys from Class D were anything but ordinary?
Her emotions swirled into a confused mess, unsure of how to process everything.
But what surprised her the most was what came next—Chabashira suddenly spoke towards the break room where Hikigaya was hiding.
"Alright, the show's over. You've seen enough, haven't you? Come out now."
"?!"
Hikigaya had been quietly enjoying the exchange between Chabashira and Ayanokoji. He couldn't believe how Ayanokoji remained so unfazed, despite all the evidence laid out in front of him. It was like watching a cockroach that couldn't be burned!
Ahem…
In any case, Ayanokoji's performance had utterly shocked Hikigaya. Who in their right mind would deliberately score 50 in every subject?
What kind of behavior was this? It was like taking your pants off to fart or wearing shorts under a mini-skirt!
If Ayanokoji wanted to hide his abilities, he should've just taken the exam normally. And if he wanted attention, he could have easily scored perfect marks.
This middle-ground behavior was less about hiding and more about wanting to be found out!
Could it be that Ayanokoji had some bizarre fetish?
After hearing everything Chabashira had revealed, Hikigaya had firmly decided that he wanted no part in whatever strange game this dangerous person was playing.
But before he could retreat, Chabashira exposed him at the worst possible moment.
Damn it, Chabashira-sensei betrayed me!
Hikigaya hesitated, not wanting to stand up, wondering if he could pretend he wasn't there and avoid the situation.
"Hikigaya, come out!" Chabashira's voice cut through his thoughts, followed by an even sharper threat. "If you don't, I'll have you expelled."
Snap!
At the sound of the word expelled, Hikigaya bolted up, no longer hesitating. He quickly opened the side door of the break room.
And there they were—Horikita Suzune and Ayanokoji Kiyotaka—both staring at him, frozen in place.
How could he describe this moment? It was like being caught role-playing in the middle of a ridiculous game, only to realize everyone had been watching the whole time…
Right now, Hikigaya's only wish was to find a hole to crawl into and never have to face this terrible reality again!
