18.88% COTE: Hikigaya's Rejection of the Strength-First Philosophy / Chapter 17: The Beachside Expression Pack

Capítulo 17: The Beachside Expression Pack

Horikita Suzune had a strong dislike for Kushida, her impatience evident from the moment Kushida arrived.

Hikigaya noticed this and was also displeased with Kushida's motives.

His earlier yuri speculation was just a passing thought; he could see that Kushida had a deeper agenda.

This might be related to Horikita Suzune's current demeanor...

Without understanding Horikita Suzune fully, Hikigaya couldn't avoid such associations.

So, focusing on the goal of making Horikita Suzune the class leader, Hikigaya decided to address Kushida, ignoring her prominent features.

"Sorry, class is about to start soon. I need to prepare my books and review them for the next lesson."

"Ah..."

Kushida was momentarily taken aback, then realized Hikigaya was trying to dismiss her.

This surprised Kushida, and for a moment, her eyes darkened noticeably. But before this darkness could fully surface, she managed to control her expression and smiled, "I understand."

"Well then, I look forward to working with you, Hikigaya-kun."

She extended her hand with a smile.

Hikigaya was somewhat surprised. He hadn't expected someone to initiate physical contact with him, especially someone as pretty as Kushida.

He glanced at Horikita Suzune, who was focused on her book, "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by Hemingway.

He nodded and shook Kushida's hand.

"Likewise..."

As Kushida left, Hikigaya felt a strange lightness.

This was his first time touching anyone other than his sister or mother in this way.

Although Kushida clearly had some issues, he still couldn't control the strange impulses and emotions bubbling up inside him.

"Maybe I should just stop washing my hands for a week..."

Hikigaya awkwardly took out some bread and continued eating, but he couldn't shake the feeling that the girl behind him was radiating a peculiar aura.

What's going on?

Has the sadistic queen suddenly become angry again?

Could it be because I was talking with Kushida just now...?

Hikigaya had a strong sense of self-awareness and didn't believe that a beautiful girl like Horikita would get jealous just because he was talking to someone else. So, there must be something he didn't know about.

While Hikigaya ate his bread, anxiously wondering if a pair of magical hands would suddenly appear behind him to choke him, the school broadcast suddenly came on.

"This afternoon at five o'clock, there will be a club orientation at the first gymnasium. Students interested in joining clubs should gather at the first gymnasium. Once again, today—"

The broadcast was interrupted by a cheerful female voice.

A club orientation... The student council is also a club, so they must be recruiting new members today, right?

Hikigaya instinctively thought about this.

"I'm not interested in joining a club."

From behind him, the icy-cold girl spoke up suddenly.

Already accustomed to Horikita's rhythm, Hikigaya realized she was talking to him and quickly responded, "Actually, I am interested in joining a club."

"Really? The Homecoming Club, then?"

"How did you know... Cough, cough, this is a boarding school, so there's no Homecoming Club."

"The Anime Club is just a gathering place for idle otaku. I don't think you'd fit in and waste your time there."

"How would you know... Wait, why do you know so much about me? Have you been investigating me?"

Hikigaya clutched his chest and assumed a pitiful expression, as if saying 'I'm so scared.'

This attitude only served to increase the chill emanating from Horikita.

Hikigaya quickly composed himself and asked, with a hint of hesitation, "Horikita, aren't you interested in joining any clubs?"

"Seems like I need to question your memory, Hikigaya. Not only do you have fish-like eyes, but now it looks like your brain has fish-like memory too... I already said I'm not interested in socializing."

"Right..."

Hikigaya nodded, further understanding Horikita's personality.

Because of this, he was now very curious about the other side of Horikita's cold exterior. He felt that if he could see it, it would definitely be very interesting.

Suddenly, an idea sparked in Hikigaya's mind, along with a sense of trial and error. He spoke slowly, "I'm actually considering joining the student council."

"The student council?!"

In an instant, Hikigaya felt Horikita Suzune's breath halt completely.

Her previously icy face seemed to have melted like it had touched the sun, revealing a bare, vulnerable side underneath.

"There's no way someone like you could do it!"

The sudden dismissal was absolute.

"Why not?" Hikigaya feigned indifference. "It's just an attempt. I never really thought I'd make it."

Hikigaya was speaking honestly—he didn't believe he had a chance of joining the student council.

In fact, his chances of getting a Kamen Rider belt tomorrow and saving the world seemed higher...

"Well, you do have a certain level of self-awareness," Horikita replied, realizing her emotions were getting the best of her and quickly trying to regain her composure. "But honestly, I can't see any reason why the student council would want someone like you—antisocial, with a terrible personality, and lacking any future potential."

"Must you paint such a bleak picture? I can at least admit to the first two..."

"And do you really think you have a bright future ahead of you?"

"My goal is to hook up with the richest woman I can find, become a househusband supported by her, and spend my days loafing around while she earns money to support me!"

Hikigaya declared his ultimate goal with a tone as if describing a grand ambition.

"It seems I was too lenient in my assessment of you. You're nothing more than scum, Hikigaya."

"Why are you suddenly using my middle school nickname?!"

Hikigaya was taken aback, even more convinced that Horikita had done some digging into his past.

Her expression turned even colder in response.

"Anyway, whether you get into the student council or not is your business. I have no interest in club activities. But once you fail, I'll be sure to laugh at you heartily."

"So you've already made failure a given..."

"What else would you expect?"

Horikita looked at him with an expression that seemed to say she had no faith in Hikigaya's success—like someone who would scoff at a toad dreaming of eating swan meat.

Hikigaya had also considered his chances of joining the student council to be slim.

But now, seeing Horikita's reaction, he couldn't help but wonder what her face would look like if he actually succeeded in joining the council.

Uh-oh, the classic meme of someone lying face down on the beach was already forming in his mind...
