Room of Requirement
Ethan looked at the others with a serious expression.
"During the next period, you should not wander around. It's best to move together within Hogwarts. Don't come to the Room of Requirement. I'll take you back to the common room when we return later."
"What happened?"
Hermione frowned and looked at Ethan.
He spoke so seriously, as if something big was going to happen or something very dangerous.
But this is Hogwarts, known as the safest place in the British wizarding world.
Dumbledore is also the greatest wizard of this era. According to the book, Voldemort didn't even break in when he was at his most rampant.
I really can't understand what kind of dangers could be encountered at Hogwarts.
But maybe Lockhart's magic mishaps and Seamus's explosion spells are still considered dangerous.
"As you know, I often go to the Forbidden Forest and have a good relationship with the magical creatures there.
The Acromantulas told me that a monster has entered Hogwarts"
It's basically confirmed that the basilisk was released, and it's very likely that Ronald released it. Otherwise, it's hard to explain Ronald's recent changes.
Unless there's external interference, would Ronald voluntarily study? It's just unclear how Ronald got hold of the notebook that should have belonged to Ginny.
The Acromantulas did indeed relay this information to Ethan.
The rain stopped yesterday, and it was cloudy this morning.
Ethan cast a few spells on himself and went to the Forbidden Forest, where the Acromantulas informed him of the news.
There are also some little ones among the Acromantulas.
The newly born little spiders like to run around.
They aren't dangerous.
It's normal for them to wander into Hogwarts, but they usually get scared and scurry away before they can settle in.
The basilisk is the Acromantulas' natural enemy.
As soon as its presence is nearby, the Acromantulas can sense it.
The little spiders only felt fear, but Aragog understood what was happening.
This was their natural enemy, the basilisk, returning, so he told Ethan the news.
Logically, Ethan should be able to hear the basilisk's voice like Harry, as they both have the ability to speak Parseltongue.
But Ethan just couldn't hear any strange whispers.
For Ethan, the basilisk isn't a threat as long as he's careful not to meet its gaze, and even Gungnir could kill it.
But for Penelope and the others, it's deadly. Even if they aren't petrified, they might not be able to escape if they encounter it.
Take Penelope, for example. She and Ethan learned Mjolnir together, but she hasn't mastered it yet. Right now, it's hard for her to summon a hammer. She can only form a ball of lightning, which is still a bit difficult to use against the basilisk with its extreme magic resistance.
Harry was able to defeat the basilisk mainly because of the protagonist's luck. First, he didn't look into the basilisk's eyes, then the basilisk's eyes were blinded by the phoenix, and finally, he got the Gryffindor sword, which can slice through anything.
In the end, he was poisoned by a snake bite that even the souls in the Horcruxes couldn't withstand. He survived for a short time, long enough for the phoenix to heal him.
Anyone else would have died a hundred times over.
"A monster?"
"What kind of monster entered Hogwarts?"
Hermione looked at Ethan curiously. She knew Ethan wouldn't joke about such things.
Also, what humans can't perceive doesn't necessarily mean animals can't sense it.
Hermione knew that, before many major events in the Muggle world, animals often exhibited signs, but humans might not always notice these warnings.
"Anyway, it's not simple. If it can scare a XXXXX-level Acromantula, it's serious. So just follow my instructions for now," Ethan said, unable to explain in too much detail.
He just wanted them to understand there was danger. If they wanted more information, they could research it themselves. Whether they'd be able to discover what the Acromantula feared, Ethan wasn't sure. After all, there was no mention of Acromantulas fearing basilisks in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
"Okay, just listen to Ethan. Be careful for now. Or do you think you can handle XXXXX-level magical creatures? First, beat Onyxia, who's still a baby." Cassandra interjected as Hermione was about to ask more questions, cutting her off.
Knowing the danger, it was best to avoid it. No amount of questioning would change the situation. XXXXX-level magical creatures would crush them—Onyxia alone could pin several people down, not to mention more powerful creatures.
Although Hermione's personality had improved a little compared to before, she still had a habit of being thorough and wanting to understand everything.
"Cassandra is right. Fifty years ago, a student died at Hogwarts. Before that, students occasionally died from accidents each year, but it wasn't uncommon."
Myrtle was from Ravenclaw House, and her death was documented in the Ravenclaw library, something Penelope knew well.
There were books in the Ravenclaw library that recorded what Hogwarts used to be like, which was far worse than it was under Dumbledore's leadership.
Peeves wreaked havoc in the castle, and the caretakers severely punished students who broke the rules, often causing psychological trauma to young wizards.
Although there was no Dark Arts class, the subject was quite popular at Hogwarts, and bloody conflicts were not uncommon—largely thanks to a certain headmaster. There was even an incident where an entire dormitory of Gryffindor students ventured into the Forbidden Forest, only to be attacked by poachers, with several wizards killed.
"Well, just listen to Ethan, and don't come here for a while."
Hermione wanted to argue, but she was outnumbered. Even Cho Chang wasn't siding with her this time.
After a few more instructions, Ethan and Penelope stepped aside to practice the Patronus Charm. Ethan still wanted to learn the spell, but after several attempts, he couldn't even produce the basic white mist, so he had given up.
Now that Penelope was practicing, Ethan was curious to see if there was anything he could learn from her technique.
Ethan clearly remembered that even Dolores Umbridge, who had a notoriously nasty personality, could cast a Patronus—hers was a cat.
This proved that people with impure hearts or easily influenced by negative emotions could still succeed at the spell.
"I'm just a little more talented in Dark Magic. Why can't I master this?" Ethan thought.
(It's hard to determine a concrete standard for who can cast the Patronus. Umbridge could, but the only Death Eater who could summon one was Snape, because of his love for Lily. Other Death Eaters couldn't manage it.)
The Patronus Charm is often linked to the Animagus form, like Professor McGonagall's cat and James Potter's stag. (Other wizards who could summon a Patronus didn't use Animagus forms, which exposed the Patronus Charm's limits for Animagi.)
Ethan also wanted to use the Patronus Charm to figure out his Animagus form.
"Expecto Patronum!"
A thick, silver-white smoke emerged from the tip of Penelope's wand, but after a minute, she dissipated it herself.
"It still doesn't work." Penelope said, frustrated. The second stage, where the Patronus took a physical form, still eluded her.
She was already in her sixth year. In addition to keeping up with her studies, she had to focus on strengthening her abilities to gain an edge.
Although Ethan had said he would help her enter the Ministry of Magic, Penelope wanted to improve on her own too. The Patronus Charm was a perfect spell to master—its difficulty and the positivity it represented meant that wizards who could summon a physical Patronus were often recommended for high-ranking positions in the Wizengamot or the Ministry of Magic.
"At least you've mastered the first stage, which is more than I can say for myself," Ethan said helplessly. Penelope's progress was impressive, considering Harry's rapid advancement was due to the help of a Boggart and later direct confrontations with Dementors. Forced, high-pressure learning situations like Harry's aren't common.
Ethan figured he could try using Dementors later, but for now, a Boggart would suffice. Harry was afraid of Dementors, so the Boggart took their form. That wouldn't work for just anyone.
"But it's not a physical Patronus, so it's not effective," Penelope sighed.
"Look at it from another angle. How many students at Hogwarts can even cast the Patronus Charm?" Ethan replied.
Comparisons helped put things into perspective. Few people actively learn the Patronus Charm unless they've faced Dementors firsthand.
"I'll try again. Expecto Patronum"
Ethan felt he had prepared his emotions properly. He raised his wand, closed his eyes, and focused on his happiest memories.
But nothing happened.
He had followed the steps correctly. The Patronus Charm was fueled by positive emotions, and he had recalled his happiest moments.
He thought back to both lives—playing games in internet cafes, singing karaoke with his roommates, or even paying for services at a nearby technical school. In this life, he had even received his Golden Finger—but none of it worked.
It seemed his talent just wasn't strong enough, and he hadn't stacked enough buffs.
In Nico's collection, Ethan had come across a book that mentioned the earliest days of magic. Back then, there were no wands, spells, or specific gestures. Wizards relied on instinct and mental power to cast spells like fire and lightning. They could also teleport, though it was unstable.
Much like the superpowers in modern urban novels, only those with true talent could do such things.
As magic developed, wands, spells, and gestures were invented to control and enhance power. However, as casting became easier, wizards lost their former abilities. Now, few can cast spells silently or without wands, and those who can do so with just a thought are even rarer.
Ethan agreed with this theory.
