I grimaced as I bent down and passed a stone over the blade of a rusty sword. While it was of little use to do this with such a rusty weapon a common stone would do little for the blade. They were, for the most part, something to keep me focused, The goblins would soon find the cave if we did nothing, and I would not want to fight a battle in a place where Grandmother would be unprotected.
While I was petting Alaia, the cat, she had escaped in the chaos of things and although cowardly, she was smart enough to follow our trail to the cave, taking advantage of the shelter and safety.
Although Dalos was a useful man, he was still a terrified young man who had never experienced anything like this, he had barely left his village and his few experiences were limited to his surroundings, I could not count on someone like that.
I fixed my gaze on him and continued to analyze the situation, only to see him preparing dinner, as he skinned and seasoned the rabbits, preparing a stew with the wild berries he had picked.
"I didn't imagine you were so good at cooking" I said, a little surprised by what I was seeing.
"I lived alone with my grandparents, both old people so I was the one who took care of the housework, they used to tell me that with my poor hunting skills, I would have to be good at housework to get a woman" replied Daloso as he shifted the rabbit over the fire.
"They seem like nice people."
"They were, they always saw the bright side of things."
I looked towards my grandma as I remembered the concern about her "My grandma is the same way, she is a woman who wants to believe in the good side of everyone, and that's why she treated everyone in the village for a few silver"
"When I saw the two of you, I used to think about my childhood. When you are not with your grandmother your look is kind of empty, you look indifferent to anyone around you, but that changes once you are by her side, you try to smile and try to relate" He paused and smiled "I get it, my grandparents were everything to me too, since they left I have just been living life in a monotonous way, watching time pass by. This just put an extreme twist on my life."
"Thank you Dalos, without you, I wouldn't have been able to get out of this and I don't want to imagine what would have happened to Grandma."
"Relax, you've both saved my life enough times that this is just a little"
"We should rest, we'll be out of all this tomorrow" I kept my tone soft but firm.
It had been a good talk, and it was nice to learn more about Dalos, he seemed like a young guy barely in his twenties, who had lived a simple life, but didn't have to lose it to creatures like goblins.
In the middle of the night I opened my eyes, it was time to deal with the problems that plagued me, I could not wait until the next morning and risk them being more dangerous, although they were better at night, they had been active during the day. The plan was to find their camp and kill the remaining goblins.
But I would not underestimate their abilities again, so I would use certain alternatives to cover and confuse their sense of smell.
....
What I found was disturbing. It wasn't hard to find the stupid creatures, their campfire was visible from anywhere, and their camp was barely a chaotic gathering of materials, debris, and animal bones. The greenery of the forest was all gone with what barely seemed like hours to stay.
At first, I doubted that the lands of Mordor could lose all nature because of the few periods of occupation by Sauron's forces, but this was an example that the corruption of the creatures was not only about their perversion and stupidity. They were creatures that could not coexist with the world.
The camp consisted of little more than a dozen goblins, all clustered in four groups sleeping on top of each other, a minimum of four vong in each, with no guards or lookouts.
Approaching without being heard was easy, they seemed exhausted and with a light body the sound of footsteps was light, measuring my steps it was easy to approach the first group. I pulled out the rusty sword from my inventory and stabbed my first victim, it was easy to kill the next ones after that, but it wasn't until the fifth one, that a sudden grip came towards my ankle.
I let go of my sword due to surprise and fear made me stumble backward, once I understood what was happening, I pulled a rusty mace from my inventory and pushed it away from its attempts to sink its teeth into my neck.
Immediately after. I leaned back, with one hand holding the goblin's elbow and with the mace pushing his body off of me as I slid down. Then, suddenly, I pushed him forward with a thrust of my legs and his figure flew off hitting the tree in front of us. All else that could be heard was a pitiful groan.
Our strengths were very different, with his strength resembling that of a human infant and mine surpassing that of an average man, it gave me a great advantage over him and it was thanks to that that any force he could exert was ineffective.
The blow of the mace was enough to make him no longer a nuisance, the sound of branches was heard next to me and I propelled my body to the side, dodging the attack coming from behind and the mace in my hand was already crushing the goblin's head that rushed towards me.
Once dead I could see other attackers, they were the rest of the goblins, all slowly approaching as they surrounded me. Either a quicker reaction than I expected or it was a trap. Either way, it was another sign that I had been careless.
They spoke a language I had never heard before, the leader was a slightly larger goblin with a scar running across his face, and their clothes followed the same standard as the others, bits of broken and rusted armor.
He was not so informed about the hierarchy of goblins or orcs, but it was easy to guess who was the leader, for all were almost naked except a few, and the few wore only a few pieces.
When the long shouting echoed through the camp, the atmosphere could only be described as entangled. The first to approach were those without armor, my skills and strength coupled with their poor coordinated skills allowed me to take the momentum of the battle, I would strike at anyone who came within my reach while avoiding the blow of blunt weapons and deflecting any attacks with slashing weapons.
My luck ran out when a goblin with a spear aimed for my stomach while receiving attacks towards my head. The only option left to me was to receive the attack aimed at my head with my left arm as I retreated into a tree, a position where I could undo an attack point.
It wasn't long before I was able to finish off the rest of the unarmored goblins, leaving seven rusty-armored goblins who had waited for the fight to end, taking two more wounds in the process, one more slash to the left arm and a bite to the foot.
But it wasn't that bad, because, from his position, I could easily watch as the row of rust-armored, mace-wielding goblins prepared for the next assault. Even if I had finished them off, I knew that the other party was fast approaching.
