Chapter 22: Aether Extraction
In the aftermath of the Dark Elves' defeat, the atmosphere in Asgard was tense. To Odin, the Allfather, The news of the Dark Elves releasing every lawbreaker from the palace dungeon, including Loki, weighed heavily on his mind. His brow furrowed, and his eyes, sharp as ever, flickered with the concern of a ruler whose city had been breached in the most unexpected way. He issued an immediate order, his voice a deep, commanding boom, for the soldiers to search every corner of the city and apprehend the escaped prisoners. There was no room for error; Asgard's security had been compromised, and Odin's authority had been challenged.
As days passed, the search for the escaped prisoners intensified. The city, normally radiant with golden light and brimming with energy, now carried an undercurrent of unease. Every Asgardian soldier was on high alert, their expressions steely, their movements swift. The once-vibrant marketplaces and serene halls of the palace were overshadowed by the urgent search efforts, with every citizen aware of the potential threat lurking among them.
Back in the medical chamber, the focus shifted from the external threat to a more personal one—the extraction of the Aether from Jane Foster. The room was a blend of ancient Asgardian architecture and Frankenstein's modern technology, an intricate device standing at its center, pulsating softly with a dull, rhythmic hum. The machine, a testament to Frankenstein's extensive research, gleamed under the chamber's dim light. It was the culmination of days spent analyzing the Aether and studying Dark Elf technology, its design both elegant and formidable.
Jane lay on the medical bed, her body secured with soft leather straps. Her face was pale, her breaths shallow as she stared at the ceiling, a mix of fear and determination in her eyes. Queen Frigga, standing beside her, exuded calm reassurance, her hand gently resting on Jane's shoulder. "You must remain calm, my dear," Frigga whispered, her voice soothing, as though the gentle cadence of her words could ease the turmoil within Jane's heart.
Thor stood nearby, his usually confident demeanor now overshadowed by anxiety. His brows knit together, and his lips pressed into a thin line as he watched Frankenstein make the final adjustments to the device. The whirring of the machine filled the room, adding to Thor's unease. Just as Frankenstein was about to begin, Thor, unable to contain his worry, blurted out, "Wait, umm… Sir Frankenstein, this machine is safe, right? It won't hurt Jane?"
Frankenstein turned to Thor, a hint of exasperation in his expression, though it was tempered by understanding. His lips curled into a small, reassuring smile. "Nope, it won't hurt," he replied, his tone light-hearted but firm. He then added with a playful glint in his eye, "But if you're that worried, you could wait outside."
Thor hesitated for a moment, glancing at Jane before shaking his head. "No, I'll stay," he insisted, his voice steady, though the underlying tension was still palpable.
With a slight nod, Frankenstein turned his attention back to the machine. The moment he activated it, Jane's body went limp, her consciousness fading almost instantly. The Aether within her began to shift, drawn towards the machine through the intricate network of tubes connected to her. Thor's breath hitched, his heart pounding in his chest as he watched the dark, swirling energy slowly leave Jane's body. Frankenstein remained calm, his eyes focused, his hands moving with the precision of a seasoned scientist.
"This will take about two hours," Frankenstein said, his voice breaking the tense silence.
One by one, the Asgardian physicians exited the room, their faces etched with relief as the Aether extraction progressed smoothly. Left alone with Queen Frigga, Thor, and the unconscious Jane, Frankenstein allowed himself a brief moment of relaxation. The tension in his shoulders eased as he leaned against the wall, engaging in small talk with the others. Thor's initial nervousness began to dissipate, and even Queen Frigga smiled as they conversed about lighter matters.
When the two hours finally passed, the machine emitted a soft chime, signaling the end of the process. The Aether, now fully extracted, was contained within a reinforced tube, its dark energy swirling ominously. Frankenstein carefully disconnected the apparatus from Jane, who remained unconscious but unharmed. Thor's eyes widened with relief as he watched Frankenstein secure the tube. The scientist's expression was one of satisfaction, his earlier tension replaced with a calm, collected demeanor.
Without a word, Frankenstein stored the Aether safely within a specialized containment unit he had prepared. No one questioned his actions; there was an unspoken understanding that the dangerous artifact was safest in his hands. Thor nodded appreciatively, his earlier doubts now fully quelled.
Back at the Noblesse's chamber in the palace, Raizel stood by the window, his figure tall and commanding, yet exuding an air of tranquility. The room was bathed in the soft light of Asgard's setting sun, casting long shadows across the floor. Outside, the city was bustling once more, the Asgardians slowly returning to their daily lives, though the recent events had left a lingering sense of vigilance.
Raizel, with his usual calm demeanor, observed the scene below with a sense of finality. "Frankenstein," he spoke, his voice deep and steady, filled with the weight of centuries. His eyes, sharp and discerning, remained fixed on the view outside. "It is time we leave Asgard and head to Midgard. The danger here has been resolved."
Frankenstein, standing a respectful distance behind his master, nodded in agreement. "As you command, Master," he replied.
