Hardy's private jet landed in Miami as the general election approached. With the election nearing, all parties were making their final push, delivering speeches and rallying support.
Upon arriving at Miami Airport, Mike greeted Hardy with a warm hug. They quickly got into a car, and Hardy asked, "Is it exhausting to follow Johnson around for these speeches?"
"Very fulfilling," Mike replied with a smile. "This is the life I enjoy."
Hardy leaned closer and said, "Take this opportunity to learn. When you run for the Senate, become a party leader, and eventually run for president, I believe you'll have a real shot at the presidency."
"I'll work hard towards that goal," Mike said.
"How have the recent speeches been going?" Hardy inquired.
"They've been great. We've arranged them in advance, with crowds of about 20,000 to 30,000 at each speech. In major cities, the numbers reach 40,000 to 50,000," Mike reported.
"And Dewey?" Hardy asked.
"Since the 'Black Gold' incident, Dewey's popularity has significantly dropped. His crowds are noticeably smaller compared to President Johnson's. Rumor has it he's been blaming his team for this," Mike replied.
Hardy smiled upon hearing this.
The car soon arrived at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, where President Johnson was staying. The Ritz-Carlton, known for its luxury, welcomed Hardy and Mike. Upon entering Johnson's presidential suite, Hardy was greeted by Johnson and a rotund man in his sixties. Johnson stood up and embraced Hardy warmly.
The other people in the room also stood to greet Hardy.
"How was your trip to Europe?" Johnson asked with a smile.
"Rebuilding efforts there require reinforced concrete, food, and daily necessities. My Hardy Group mainly deals with media, so our European business was limited to buying some luxury brands, which was a minor gain," Hardy replied with a smile.
"Hardy, let me introduce you to my running mate, Vice President William Barkley," Johnson said, introducing the older man.
Hardy had heard of Barkley, a seasoned politician with a long history of public service. Barkley was now Truman's running mate in the Democratic Party's campaign.
"Hello, Mr. Barkley. I've heard a lot about you from President Johnson. It's a pleasure to finally meet you," Hardy said enthusiastically.
Barkley shook Hardy's hand warmly. "We have similar roles. I help President Johnson secure the party's support, and you help him gain popular support. It's quite similar."
Hardy laughed, "Thank you for the compliment. I don't think what I do compares to your role."
Barkley shook his head, "No, your 'Black Gold Incident' was a critical factor in this campaign. Dewey's momentum was completely halted, and you deserve credit for that."
The discussion continued with Johnson expressing his enthusiasm despite his fatigue. Hardy suggested reinforcing security for Johnson's upcoming speeches in Miami, recalling the 1933 assassination attempt on President Roosevelt.
The team agreed, recognizing the importance of security during such a critical period.
As the night fell, a small reception was held in the hotel banquet hall. Stars like Marilyn Monroe and Shania Dunn attended, promoting their involvement with Hardy Group. The party was lively, with everyone enjoying themselves.
Hardy, feeling the effects of alcohol, wobbled toward the elevator. Monroe happened to be inside, and as the elevator shook, Hardy reached out, grabbing Monroe for support. Concerned, Monroe and others helped Hardy to his room.
Once in his room, Hardy was helped to bed by his assistant, who then instructed Monroe to assist with undressing Hardy. Monroe, unsure about removing Hardy's trousers, hesitated but eventually proceeded. In the process, Hardy, disoriented from the alcohol, inadvertently touched Monroe inappropriately.
Monroe, caught in a compromising situation, thought, **"Oh my God, what should I do now?"
