Capítulo 36: A Change of Heart, Sota's Resolve

"Alright, everyone," she began, clapping her hands to get their attention. "I know we've got a lot of work to do, and we're not quite a full team yet, but I want to make sure we're all in this together. We've got a few weeks before the qualifiers, so we'll be focusing on building up our skills, learning the game, and most importantly, working as a team."

"..."

"..."

Ryuji yawned, but Aiko pressed on. "I know some of you are new to the game, and that's okay. We'll take it step by step, and I'm here to help with anything you need."

She looked around the room, meeting each of their gazes. Daichi still seemed unsure, Ryuji indifferent, and Ouji was clearly in his own world, but Aiko could sense a sliver of potential in each of them. They might not be the most promising team on paper, but she was determined to make this work.

"We'll start practice after school today," Aiko continued. "It'll be a light session to get everyone warmed up and familiar with the basics. Any questions?"

No one said anything, and Aiko took that as a sign to continue. "Great. And remember, if you have any concerns or need help with anything, don't hesitate to come to me."

As the boys nodded—or in Ryuji's case, shrugged—Aiko felt a small spark of hope ignite within her. The team was far from perfect, but they were hers, and she would do everything in her power to make them succeed.

The bell rang, signaling the start of the school day. The boys stood up, gathering their things and heading towards the door. As they filed out, Aiko felt a surge of determination. She would make this work. She had to.

Once the room was empty, Aiko sank back into her chair, the weight of the responsibility she had taken on settling heavily on her shoulders. There was so much to do, and so little time to do it. But she couldn't afford to falter now.

Aiko glanced at the calendar on the wall, counting down the days until the qualifiers. They were dangerously close, and the team was still incomplete. She needed two more members, and she needed them fast. But that wasn't even the biggest issue.

Aiko let out a deep sigh, rubbing her temples. The lack of a coach was a glaring problem, one that she hadn't been able to solve. She had scoured the area, talked to teachers, and even reached out to some alumni, but no one seemed willing or able to take on the task.

The sound of footsteps approaching the room caught her attention, and she quickly sat up, expecting one of the boys to have forgotten something. But when the door opened, she was surprised to see Sota standing there, his expression unreadable.

"Sota?" Aiko said, her voice betraying her surprise. "What are you doing here?"

He hesitated for a moment before stepping inside, closing the door behind him. "I wanted to talk to you," he said quietly.

Aiko's heart skipped a beat. She hadn't expected him to come to her, not after he had been avoiding her for so long. "Of course," she said, trying to keep her voice steady. "What's on your mind?"

Sota walked over to the window, looking out at the courtyard below. "I've been thinking," he began, his voice low. "About everything that's happened. About the team, and about what I'm doing with my life."

Aiko stayed silent, letting him speak at his own pace.

"I'm... sorry, I've been distant these past few days.," Sota continued, his gaze still fixed on the outside world. "After the injury, I didn't know how to deal with it."

Aiko's heart ached for him. She had seen firsthand how much Sota had struggled after the injury, how he had shut himself off from the world. But hearing him say it out loud made it all the more real.

"I didn't want to face it," Sota admitted, his voice wavering slightly. "So I ran away. I pushed everyone away, including you."

Aiko felt a lump form in her throat. She wanted to reach out, to tell him that it was okay, that she understood, but she held back, letting him continue.

"But then I saw the team," Sota said, his voice growing stronger. "I saw how much you were all struggling, how much you needed help. And I realized that I couldn't keep running. I couldn't keep hiding from what happened."

He finally turned to face her, his eyes filled with a determination that Aiko hadn't seen in a long time. "I want to help the team, Aiko. You believed in me first, and I'm going to take the chance to make my first step."

Aiko felt a surge of emotion welling up inside her. This was the Sota she had always known—the one who never gave up, no matter how tough things got. She stood up, walking over to him, her heart swelling with pride.

"Sota," she said softly, "I'm so glad you're here."

He nodded, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "I know. I'm ready to give it my all."

Aiko couldn't help but smile back, feeling a renewed sense of hope. With Sota back on board, she knew they had a fighting chance. There was still so much work to be done, but for the first time in a long time, she felt like they could actually pull this off.

"Let's do this," Aiko said, holding out her hand.

Sota took it, his grip firm and reassuring. "Let's do it."

Together, they stood in the empty clubroom, the weight of the challenges ahead pressing down on them. But they were no longer alone. They had each other, and they had the team. And with that, Aiko knew they could face whatever came their way.

As they walked out of the room, side by side, Aiko felt a glimmer of hope ignite within her. The road ahead was still long and uncertain, but for the first time, it didn't feel quite so daunting.
