Capítulo 21: The Path to the Mountains

At the beginning of summer, as the sun begins to rise, a layer of mist envelops the surroundings of the Shadow Tower and gradually disperses, revealing what might be the largest military camp in the area.

To the north of the Shadow Tower are the coal mountains. An extremely magnificent group of camps was situated in front of the coal mountain, and on the other side of the river, a huge gate was in constant motion. From the mountain to the port, there was nothing but the people traveling on the five enormous warships.

Since there was nothing else here that could unify them, everyone had joined to serve Haldor and dreamed of seeking fertile lands where they could work honestly.

Haldor fed them, told them stories of the world beyond the cold winter, and enticed them with sweet promises so that they would eagerly move forward with nothing else in mind.

It had been two months since Haldor settled in this place from the Shadow Tower. Unlike the others, he joined the patrol to search for those giants.

A small group was selected: five armored bears, twenty guards, five wizards, and some additional helpers who would come along to solve routine problems.

Haldor wore his black armor, carried two swords, and a bow, which was secondary in case he didn't need to get close to the enemy to eliminate them.

Everyone traveled on foot; there were carriages that could be carried by the armored bears, but no one in this group rode them because they considered the bears as brothers on the battlefield, and being carried by them would mean they were mere burdens.

Winter had passed, so walking in this place was much more pleasant than at other times. They did not encounter many difficulties walking through the mountains, especially with the help of the armored bears carrying the carriages.

His father asked him to return, but Haldor had plans to make before even thinking about going back to his father.

It wasn't that he didn't trust people; he wouldn't be swayed by destinies, dreams, what people expected of him, or what he was expected to do.

Haldor was tired of this life for someone to now tell him what to do. He had a damned dragon, one that had grown big enough to compare to the one that emerged from the temple on that occasion.

"I don't think the giants will accept us."

"I think the same; they are not as intelligent as you." Haldor complimented the armored bears for their wisdom.

It was true; they had been very understanding and gave him a path no other human had dared to cross, so they both respected each other.

"Is it true that you survived naked in the extreme cold?" The armored bears don't stop admiring you; they believe you are a god." Ravyn communicated with Haldor like a friend would with another.

Many preferred to walk in silence due to the fear of being ambushed, but Haldor, feeling secure, said, "My great brothers lie."

Luker, who was traveling with the group, said, "We do, but everyone is increasingly impressed with fictional stories that are much more fantastical than the previous ones."

"Wait." Luker stopped the group when he smelled something.

The other armored bears bared their teeth, and when they saw their large companions become agitated, everyone drew their swords.

Lucian approached Haldor and said, "Stay close."

"I can defend myself; don't break the line." Haldor didn't want to be treated like a child who needed others' care.

Luker led the group as he climbed the mountain and said, "I smell blood."

Everyone climbed one after another, and there was a sepulchral silence; no one spoke a single word when they arrived at the giants' village.

When Haldor climbed up, he saw all the chaos around him.

"We're too late; the undead arrived first."
