I'm a bookworm and can't go without a book in my hand. I often borrow books from the library; my world seems to revolve around reading. Except when Keivan came into my life, I paused my reading a bit. But now, books are my first love again.
Currently, I was running to the school library because it was about to close, and I wanted to borrow a book. I had no choice since it's Saturday tomorrow, and I wanted to borrow it now that I had finished the book I was reading. Luckily, I arrived just in time. It was almost 6 PM, and the library was about to close in a few minutes.
I was happy to have borrowed a book, but as I was leaving, it started pouring rain heavily. I was stuck by the library door because I had left my umbrella at home. How unlucky.
A moment later, I saw a familiar man approaching, soaked to the bone. It was Alzid.
"What are you doing here? Are you crazy? Why are you standing in the rain?" I asked him in surprise.
"I came to pick you up. Is that a problem?" he said.
"You really didn't have to pick me up in the rain. How crazy can you be?" I said, irritated.
"I went to your classroom, and your friend said you were here in the library. By the time I got here, it was already raining," he explained. I felt a bit guilty as if it was my fault.
"Look, you didn't have to pick me up. You have no obligation to me, okay?" I said.
"But you're my girlfriend for 2 months, right?" he said. I looked into his eyes, and he smiled at me. He's really perfect and so handsome, but I didn't feel any excitement or anything because my heart still beats for only one person.
"Okay, fine—" I started to say, but I was cut off by a loud thunderclap, causing me to scream and hug him tightly.
I closed my eyes in fear and slowly opened them to find him smiling mischievously while staring into my eyes. I pushed him away.
"Old tricks to make me hug you. That's so outdated," he said, laughing.
He seemed not used to speaking Tagalog, as his accent had an English tone. I got nervous whenever he spoke English because I'm not very good at it, even though I'm a bookworm who reads only Tagalog books for better understanding.
"Stop teasing me! I was just startled," I said and looked at the continuing downpour.
"Look, there's an umbrella over there," he said, pointing to an umbrella nearby.
"Ugh, I wish I had seen that earlier so I could have gone home already," I said.
"Well, then you would have left me behind," he said.
"Hey, stop with your antics. FYI, I'm not going to fall for that," I said, grabbing the umbrella he pointed to. I heard him laughing. I knew his tricks, but I opened the umbrella anyway.
"I'll hold it," he said, taking the umbrella from me. I let him have it.
The rain was still heavy and annoying. I saw that his other arm was drenched because he was holding the umbrella over me, but he was already soaked anyway. We went to the school parking lot and stopped in front of his car.
"The rain is still heavy. Get in the car. I'll give you a ride," he said, opening the car door for me.
Since it was raining heavily, I agreed to let him drive me home. We were inside the car; I sat in the front seat next to him as he started the engine.
"Thank you," I said, looking at him. He looked back at me and smiled, then turned his gaze back to the road.
"Why do you want me to pretend to be your girlfriend?" I asked out of nowhere.
"You'll find out," he replied briefly, so I didn't ask more since he wasn't revealing much.
"Don't fall in love with me," he said.
"Wow, really? Me?" I said, laughing at his comment. He just grinned, teasing me further.
"Do you think you'll forget him if someone loves you more than you love him?" he asked while still driving.
"I don't know... I still love him even now," I said, and he didn't say anything more.
I decided to get off at the subdivision gate since I didn't want to get scolded by my aunt.
On Monday, as I was leaving for school, I saw Alzid leaning against his car, smiling when he saw me.
"What are you doing here?" I asked.
"I'm here to take you to school," he said.
"You don't have to," I replied.
"I have to. I'm your boyfriend, right?" he said. I didn't want to argue, so I agreed to let him take me.
When we arrived at school, I ran into Keivan, but I avoided eye contact. However, he spoke, so I looked back at him.
"Nice new guy you have. He has a nice car," he said. I just stared at him and didn't speak.
"Better than me... so you've found someone who has a car that you like now," he said quietly, but I heard him.
"Keivan, what's your deal? Are you insulting me?" I couldn't stop myself from raising my voice.
"What's wrong with what I said?" he replied, annoyed.
"It's insulting. You're the one who left, and now you seem angry that I have a boyfriend!" I said angrily.
"I just can't accept how easily you replaced me. Just the other day, you were crazy about me," he said, which made me even angrier. I slapped him hard enough to make his cheek flush.
"How dare you, Keivan! You have some nerve. Do you think I don't know about you and Angela? Don't turn this around on me! I don't even know you anymore. I'm done with you! Stop bothering me!" I said. Despite my anger, I couldn't stop myself from crying because, damn it, I still loved that guy even though he was just playing with me.
When I got to the classroom, I tried to calm myself down.
"Girl, there's talk about the prom at school. Do you have a partner?" Kath asked.
Honestly, I wasn't interested in the prom with everything that was happening. I didn't want anyone as a partner.
"Anyone," I said disinterestedly and went to my seat.
"Wow, you're so KJ (killjoy)." Kath followed me and sat next to me. I started to pick up the book I was reading.
"I'm serious, girl. I don't mind who it is, as long as the prom is over," I said, and Kath laughed. As I read, I thought about Keivan and the hurtful words he said earlier. Despite my anger, I was still foolishly in love with him.
